NFTs don't hold value - Splinterlands Giveaway #43

Hello fellow Hivians!

Just yesterday Crypto entrepreneur and enthusiast Sina Estavi opened their NFT of Jack Dorsey's first tweet (originally purchased for $2.9M) for bid listed at $48M. After the allotted time the highest bid was only a mere $280. Very clearly an NFT of a tweet has no real use case and the value is simply only there because of hype and collector desire. I was wondering when this type of thing might start happening to the higher profile NFTs out there (Bored Apes, etc).

Many of us in the Hive community and the greater crypto community are involved in NFTs (Splinterlands included) and a large majority of them imo will ultimately follow the same type of path, eventually someone is going to be holding the bag. That isn't to say an NFT without a use case is innately bad. Sometimes you just like something and that alone gives it value to you. I just warn you that you should be buying these NFTs going into it with the understanding that they can, and many likely will, be worthless to others and you won't be able to resell them.

NFTs do hold their value. My beta packs and assets I bought over a year ago for about $3,000 are now worth over $150,000 lol so to say NFTs don't hold value is crazy. Simply put Splinterlands is in a low point right now and most likely will be till Q4 or the start of 2023.

Some NFTs hold value but to say just because something is an NFT means its value will hold is simply not true. Splinterlands cards all have a use case. At the very least, each NFT card can be used to play the game.

Also I'd like to point out that your experience with SPL cards specifically is what you would classify as anecdotal evidence.

Well of course there is a lot of garbage NFTs as well. However there are a lot of legitimate cases. This goes the same for any type of asset including artwork would be the best example of this. Some artwork is priced at stupid high speculation prices while others are low all because of the name and history of it all. Goes for card collecting as well many cases so it's really no different than any of those assets.

Nft value Is what the people decide It has...if i have a Gold foil chain golem now It has good value but if tomorrow everyone drop splinterlands It has no value...so no, they dont hold value Forever, you can try and Guess for how long they Will hold It

NFTs without a use case will be garbage. But at least they will not take up any room at the dump, lol

NFTs with usecases will find their value within the community that use them. Splinterlands is a perfect example of this. Its possible that someone gets left holding the bag in Splinterlands but the only way I see that happening is if the game fails/everyone stops playing it. One possible negative outcome for Splinterlands is the card sets keep increasing at a rate higher than the rate new players join the game. Thus pushing down the overall price of cards (NFTs). As for NFTs with no usecases those are more tricky. Such NFTs will likely end up having a small amount of potential purchasers which naturally will make reselling the more expensive ones hard to do.

exactly, I think 'people' in general don't really do enough research as to what an NFT actually is. They are just blinded by greed and jump in. Until that happens NFTs I feel will continue to have a bad name.

Agreed, NFTs with use cases will prevail for as long their use case exists. Hopefully, that is going to be a long time for Splinterlands. Because despite my ranting at times, for the most part, I still enjoy playing.

I share your assessments of NFTs (as an investment), if crypto is already to be considered risk capital, then you should consider NFTs, blockchain-games and the like, very high risk (similar to ICOs in the past)

Personally, I think NFT are going to stay around for awhile, as we go more digital they will become more mainstream, especially as we move to greener energy development it will shift things a little more.
