[ENG/ESP]A brief tour of St. Charles Borromeo Castle
Dear hivers and friends of #dailyblog, I wish you all a wonderful and productive day. I am once again with you, with the greatest pleasure to share my recent experience visiting the outskirts of the San Carlos de Borromeo Castle, located in the town of Pampatar, in the Nueva Esparta state of Margarita Island.
My initial intention was to enter the castle to appreciate its architecture and history. However, upon arrival, the custodian informed me that they were closing the gates, I did not want to insist because everyone was already finishing their work day and I clearly understand that. Although I could not explore its interior, I decided to enjoy the exterior beauty of this ancient fortress which I found fascinating.
The first thing that caught my attention is that almost all the sidewalks surrounding this beautiful building are made of stones, and from the sidewalk that borders the castle, you can see the cobblestone path that leads to the main entrance.
As I could not enter I asked the custodian some questions and I was impressed since he was able to answer some of them, according to him, the castle was built by the Spaniards in 1664, being a living testimony of the colonial era.
The imposing walls, both on the outside and in the moat surrounding the castle as well as the exterior walls, were built of resistant and strong stones, capable of resisting the attacks of corsairs and pirates that plagued the island at that time.
At the entrance to the castle, thick chains simulate holding the sturdy wooden planks that make the bridge of the entrance leading to the interior of the castle.
In the gardens, there are beautiful oak trees that give a visual spectacle, also some small period cannons decorating in a contrasting way.
But what caught my attention the most was a small grotto located in the gardens, built with large seashells and shells.
Inside, there were two beautiful virgins of the Valley, one large and one small, (the patron saint of the island). The custodian told me that every week they change their costumes, a tradition that the locals have lovingly maintained.
From afar, I was able to photograph the towers of the castle, offering a truly breathtaking view. The majesty of the architecture and the history that surrounds this place left me in awe and eager to return. Although I was not able to explore its interior this time, the experience of being in front of this fortress full of history was unforgettable.
In short, the Castillo San Carlos de Borromeo is a historical treasure of which the residents of Pampatar are proud, and which deserves to be visited.
Its exterior beauty and its colonial context tend to transport you to another era.
