I can never get the sun that 'stary'. I guess I'm supposed to fiddle with the apperture, but it never works =/

Wide angle lenses work best and yup, the smaller the aperture the better for getting a nice starburst effect. Cheers!

Wider I got is 18mm (Nikon 18-105mm not great). Thinking about the 16-35mm but it's a hella expensive

The 18mm end of the lens should be perfect. I often go out with just a 24-105mm and that lens will work too. It just doesn't work great when you zoom in. The f22 or small aperture is what is really important (maybe f16 or f18 if it works for the scene).
But remember... it's never really good for your eyes to look through the viewfinder at the sun. I try to use live preview. It's also not the healthiest thing to do for your image sensor.

Good to know! Because I'd stick my not so good eye in there and mess it up more than it is \o\
