The secret is patience, you have to move slowly and without looking at them straight ahead, waiting for them to start eating something is a good idea, it's as if they enter a trance when doing so, plus we need a lens with a good focal length like the Canon 55-250mm that I use.
Another thing that also works very well is pre-focusing, so when you are at the right distance everything will come out in focus.
