parkrun #160!

avatar

Wet, wet, wet. Today was one of the wettest parkruns I've done to date. Since beginning my "healthy" Saturday morning habit in August 2018, and only pausing for an enforced "Covid break" during a big chunk of 2020, I've now run (or occasionally walked) at 160 total parkrun events. If I really stretch and think back I'd probably find that less than 10 of these were in the rain.

With many parkrun events cancelled in Sydney (where we are on holidays) and Brisbane (where we live) we were so grateful that our planned parkrun event had a suitable wet weather course, was not flooded and though littered with puddles, was deemed safe enough to go ahead.

So at 8 am, Brad and I plus 94 other runners and walkers headed out on the Plan B course at the new parkrun event: Wentworth Common. Located in Sydney Olympic Park, this course is only 1.2 km from the very popular Rhodes parkrun and 2.2 km in another direction to Parramatta parkrun. Since both parkruns have too many a lot of parkrunners already this was a great location to entice some locals away to a brand new event.

Today was event number 8 for this parkrun. It was my 120th different location. (Woooooooo!) I finished in 39th position, as the 5th female and the 2nd in my age category. I used the (wet weather only) double out and back course to warm up on lap 1 and reel in as many runners, and specifically as many women, as possible to finish strong in 27:07.

With an overall parkrun PB of 22:31 on the nearby GreenWay parkrun course this seems slow for how consistently I had to work to achieve this but still, it was fun and I finished feeling like I'd done a proper workout but hadn't overdone it.

Today, Emma was the Run Director (volunteer boss for the day) with Ercan being the Event Director for this particular parkrun location. He was happy to finally meet me after reading oodles of the parkrun stories I (used to) write on Facebook. These photos were taken by Emma (RD) at the turnaround point of me... soaking wet ;)

Waving for the camera.

Slowing down to do a 180' turn.

My favourite of the lot, even though I'm looking back out to where I'll run next and not at the camera anymore. Onward!

I just finished a 5.0km running that lasted about 0hh:27mm:7ss !

!luv that you were able to get a parkrun in. I've been going nuts trapped inside with all this rain, going to have to resort to the treadmill tomorow by the looks of it, not clearing up anytime soon !LOL

Hope you guys have an awesome holiday !hivebits

Thanks, @maccazftw! I couldn't believe just how many parkruns were cancelled up there! So many! I'm guessing it must have been proper raining, hey?

Good luck with that treadmill! !LOL (and thanks for the lol!!!)

Well done on getting out there. You are lucky to have that choice of events, but your stats are pretty amazing. I only just did my 50th and am missing a couple lately due to travel and illness. I hope to get back to it soon.

Run free!

Oh, thanks @steevc! We are really lucky. Where we live in Brisbane there are something like half a dozen in under 30 minutes and probably more than a dozen within an hour drive of home. And in Sydney there are about 30 in the greater Sydney area.

But 50 is great! I hope that future travels take you to parkrun locations ;) and that you're feeling much better now than you were?

Gentle hugs and encouraging high fives 🙌

It seems to have really taken off in Australia. There are a few within an hour's drive of me that I have not run, but on a Saturday morning I will generally take the easier options.

I am recovering and hope to run again soon.

You suddenly seem to be getting that (annoying!) message that says "This content got low rating by people." What happened??

It has taken off in Australia. There are now than 400 events! It's amazing. I'm grateful. You're in the UK, right? There are ooodles there! But I guess you've done as we have - picked up all the ones close to home and then have to go further afield to pick up new ones. Our NENDY/NENYD is 1.5 hours away, next closest almost 2 hours and then it jumps to 3 hours +

Recover well, friend. 🤗

There's some troll who downvotes a lot of my comments. It doesn't do any real damage.

I need to get together with some of the other local runners to explore other parkruns. Car sharing makes it easier to justify. I hope to add a few more this year now things are getting back to 'normal'.

Annoying but good to know!

new.things and I hope to make it to the UK at some point in the next few years. It will be great to explore some parkruns (and other places to run) over there! Brad has quite a bit of family spread across the UK and I have ancestral roots there as well. Plus my best friend from high school lives in Manchester, so we'll be aiming to get around as much as possible. One day!
