Lagos is a really big city, loads things happening, development going on here and there, new areas getting expanded and other places you didn’t know existed getting connected to the main areas of Lagos through construction of new roads and through the water ways.

For many Lagos is like a jungle and as they say in pidgin English “no paddy for jungle” which translates to “No friend in the jungle”. I find that statement hard to believe though because the people of Lagos, the residents that come from other region to the country and around the world are really friendly people that help out strangers that are stranded.

Even in the ghetto areas of Lagos you see people that don’t have any blood relationship living as if they are from the same parents, you see mothers leaving their kids with their neighbors’ because they need to go to the market or other places.

I however see the reason in the statement because the place drives you to work because people here don’t like it if you’re lazy, so for that reason people go out every day to do whatever they can to make a living. And that brings me to my topic of the day the make shift sellers at the motor parks.

The jobs are not available to employ all the people that keep trooping into the city day in day out in search of greener pastures, we have people coming into the city searching for economic improvement in their life while some see it as a place to connect to other parts of the world.

This line of thinking might not be wrong because the city has really turned around the lives on many that dwell in it. There are so many from rags to riches stories in the city and as more people from the hinterlands see their relatives and friend doing well all because they reside in the city called Lagos, it then seems as if everybody is heading to the city to grab their own share of the pot of gold called success.

The first groups of people you see when you come into the city through almost all the land routes from all around the country are the sellers at the motor park. There are so many motor parks in Lagos linking one part of the city to another. Lagos has been described by some as “The city that never sleeps” and that is because there are parts of the city where activities go on 247 nonstop and most motor park areas that receive vehicles coming into the city all day long are like that. There are also clubs that host parties all weekend. There are just too many things to do and see in the city of Lagos.

A lot of people who can’t get the jobs they desire end up selling one thing or the other at their make shift setups under an umbrella. They sell food items, clothes, newspapers just about anything you can think of at the park, some motor parks have become markets area with the motor park still in existence while some markets have become motor parks while the market is still in existence.

Some of the motor parks have very notorious characters staying in them and have made the place a very dangerous place to be at night while others are so well secured you’ll feel very safe in them. If the plans of the Lagos government pulls through, many of these motor parks will become mega bus stations with very modern facilities and mega stores, this will no doubt clear the motor parks of the make shift park sellers.

How they will continue to survive in this big city is a matter for another post and another day.
