Praying Mantis

Praying Mantis

It is clear how the insect got its name. The elongated front legs are folded in a way like the insect is praying. They can be extended in a speed of light and the mantis will grab its prey. Interesting to know that among their preys are not just other insects but also lizzards and frogs and sometimes small birds.

Mantis can turn their heads a full 180 degrees. No other insect can do it. Their flexible joint between the head and prothorax enables to swivel their heads. That would be interesting to capture on a photo.

Another known fact is that female mantises sometimes eat their male partner. The head is triangular shaped with two large eyes. I could not make photos in such way to see the shape of the head. This little bugger was very fast running on the concrete sill. Still it cast nice shadow that I could use for some #shadowphoto contest.

This post is for the #insectpub, hosted by @whaitisnew.

Great capture! They are rather creepy insects. I've heard they can eat hummingbirds.

Oh yes, I read about that too, how they eat hummingbirds. Or, like somebody has said they should be called preying, not praying mantises.

The ones we have here don't get big enough to do much damage, but those big 5 inch long mantis that they have in the warmer parts of the country would be able to eat a lot!

They do look like aliens and if it happened to catch them staring at you, well, that is rather spooky.

When it was running, then this must have been a male Mantis, because I have read, the female are calmer. The male are always in fear, that a female comes and wants to eat it after ... ;)

Great shots, Neli, I have never seen a Mantis in nature.

Thank you very much for your comment. I saw a bigger one some days ago. It was outside the window net of our office, I was waiting to come down but I had work to do and I lost it.
