The main traditional festivities in Venezuela are of a religious nature, but not only believers participate in them. Perhaps because of the great color, rhythm, or majesty of these events, the entire population turns to celebrate them. The most striking example of this is, undoubtedly, Christmas, where even atheists sing parrandas and gaitas and decorate their houses with traditional motifs and make a family dinner on December 24 at night.

Another celebration to which people go massively is the festivities in honor of San Juan Bautista ("Saint John the Baptist"), which are celebrated in many regions and have their maximum representation in the coastal areas, where the slaves brought from Africa put down roots and carried out their cultural syncretization in which San Juan occupies a privileged place.

This festivity is so significant that last December 14, UNESCO declared it Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This news was reason enough for the Venezuelan people to celebrate it.

In the festive cycle around the veneration and worship of San Juan Bautista, which is celebrated with the beating of drums and dancing, there are solemn introductions in which the singers interpret a cappella verses, either improvised or of popular tradition, that make reference to the saint, the participants in the celebration or any theme related to the moment.

Generally, they take turns and sometimes they perform as a counterpoint, in which one singer "fights" with another. These songs are called "Siren Songs" due to a story that says that Juan fell asleep on his birthday (June 24) and woke up on the 29th, not knowing that the days had passed. When he realized that he had missed his birthday he began to cry.

It is in this part of the story when some Sirens appear and when they see the Baptist crying, they begin to sing to him, they begin to offer him their songs, and these songs are so sweet, so beautiful, so melodious that they make St. John stop crying. When this happens, the mermaids promise the saint that every June 24th with their voices, with their songs, they will wake him up so that he will never miss his birthday party again...

From the very day I heard the news about UNESCO, I wanted to record something related to the celebrations and I thought that the Cantos de sirena (mermaid songs) would be an interesting challenge because they are pure voice. So, finally, here they are. For this opportunity I made my own verses, with the characteristics of those sung in these celebrations. And this is my participation in the Hive Open Mic, week 94.

Las principales fiesta de tradición en Venezuela son de carácter religioso, pero no solo los creyentes participan de ellas. Quizá por el gran colorido, ritmo o majestuosidad de estos eventos, la población entera se vuelca a celebrarlas. El ejemplo más contundente de esto es, sin duda, la navidad, donde hasta los ateos cantan parrandas y gaitas y decoran sus casas con los motivos tradicionales t hacen la cena familiar el 24 de diciembre en la noche.

Otra celebración a la que acude la gente masivamente es a las fiestas en honor a San Juan Bautista, las cuales se celebran en muchas regiones y que tienen su máxima representación en las zonas costeras, donde los esclavos traídos de África echaron raíces y realizaron su sincretización cultural, en la que San Juan Bautista ocupa un lugar privilegiado.

Esta fiesta es tan significativa que el 14 de diciembre pasado, la UNESCO la declaró Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad. Esta noticia fue razón de sobra para que todo el pueblo venezolano lo celebrara.

En el Ciclo festivo alrededor de la veneración y culto de San Juan Bautista, que se celebra con el golpe del tambor y el baile, hay unas introducciones solemnes en las que los cantantes interpretan a cappella versos, ya sean improvisados o de tradición popular, que hacen referencia al santo, a los participantes en la celebración o cualquier tema que se relacione con el momento.

Generalmente se van turnando y a veces hacen como contrapunteos, en los que un cantante "pelea" con otro. Estos cantos son llamados "Cantos de Sirena" se debe a una historia que dice Juan se quedó dormido el día de su cumpleaños (24 de junio) y despertó el 29, sin saber que los días habían pasado. Al darse cuenta que se había perdido su cumpleaños empezó a llorar.

Es en esta parte de la historia cuando unas Sirenas aparecen y al ver al Bautista llorando, comienzan a cantarle, comienzan a ofrecerle sus cantos, y son tan dulces, tan hermosos, tan melodiosos estos cantos que logran que san Juan deje de llorar. Cuando esto ocurre, las sirenas le prometen al santo que ellas, cada 24 de Junio con sus voces, con sus cantos lo despertaran para él nunca más vuelva a perderse su fiesta de cumpleaños...

Desde el mismo día que supe la noticia de la UNESCO, quise grabar algo relacionado con las celebraciones y pensé que los cantos de sirena serían un reto interesante por ser a pura voz. Así que, finalmente, aquí están. Para esta oportunidad hice mis propios versos, con las características de los que se cantan en estas celebraciones. Y esta es mi participación para el Hive Open Mic, semana 94.
