Honesty: The best Policy?
Recently I read an article that detailed the experience of a woman who found a wallet with a million yen on the late night train.
We may be thinking how lucky, or who walks around with a million cash in their wallet. What did she do with it?
Well she did everything in her powers to find the owner and return the money💰. The owner was happy and insisted on a 300,000 yen reward.
How did she spend it?
She accepted, took the money then wrote a note to the owner that thanks was enough and left the note with the 300,000 yen in the owner's mail box.
We might think that there are many strange things about this story. But I can assure you that what some people find strange is that this story appeared on twitter as acts like this are not rare in Japan and the person doing the act doesn't usually seek recognition.
My lost and found experience
In my earlier years working here I recall losing my wallet once.It fell while exiting a car. Before I realised that I lost it I got a call from the police station saying someone found it and dropped it off there and I should come to collect it. When I got there everything was still in my wallet money, cards everything. The person who found it also refused to be identified as they were not interested in a reward.
If any of your friends found a wallet with any amount of money, 💰 what would they do with it? Would they return it to the careless owner or would they keep it?
Stay connected, stay honest.
Personally, I keep very little cash in my Wallet mostly because I tend to use a Debit Card or Credit Card for purchases. I think that is true for many people now in our expanding Internet World!
However, I do keep a few photos in it that would really upset me if I lost those. Photos can never be replaced, but money can be....
I did find someone's Wallet many years ago and handed to the Supermarket Office where I found it in the car park. I left my Mobile Number and did receive a "Thank You" text from the owner. I was happy enough with just that 😀

@bearmol, you've been given LUV from @andy-jahm.
Check the LUV in your H-E wallet. (1/3)
Awesome @andy-jahm. Your honesty ranking on returning items you found is up there. The owner must have been elated to get his/her wallet back.
Re: carrying around cash, Japan is still old school as it relates to that. It's surprising that there are still many places here that don't accept cards.
I too found a wallet many years ago when I worked at a supermarket, in my mid-twenties. It had a few hundred dollars in it, along with the person's electric bill ( I suspected that was the reason for the cash), and they had mistakenly left it at the register where I worked. Being an American, my understanding of our culture is that it is much more likely someone will keep your wallet instead of return it...we aren't really such an honorable culture in general, I don't think. So, I didn't trust just turning it into my manager. After work I did some "detective" work to figure out how to get in touch with the man, and was able to return it to him. Of course, he was a bit surprised someone would take the time to do so, and grateful as well. It wasn't quite as easy as it would be now with the internet and social medias and such!
I wish honesty and kindness towards others was the normal every day, in every culture.
For your most honorable act of kindness I send you some !LUV and !PIZZA
That act was as honest as they come @freemotherearth. That's up there in the rankings by any standard for sure. Awesome detective work! 😎
I once found around 7,000 yen in a night club bathroom, I knew it would be impossible to find the owner so I took it and bought drinks for people. Now as bad as this might sound, one reason why I did not even try to give the money to the bar tender or staff to try and find the owner is because it was a Brazilian night club. Nothing against them as I have a couple of good Brazilian friends but I understand the culture.
You really gave it a lot of thought bro. Now you've gone to the zone of wisdom. Wonder what I would do if I were in your shoe. Hard to imagine.
Electronic-terrorism, voice to skull and neuro monitoring on Hive and Steem. You can ignore this, but your going to wish you didnt soon. This is happening whether you believe it or not. https://ecency.com/fyrstikken/@fairandbalanced/i-am-the-only-motherfucker-on-the-internet-pointing-to-a-direct-source-for-voice-to-skull-electronic-terrorism
Wonderful story. Point of order - if you find things in Japan and don’t turn it in , you can be arrested if someone reports it lost or missing and you are found. There is also an unspoken / spoken (not sure) rule that you should give a 30% reward to the person for their efforts to give you back your things. Most people reject it.
I have lost things and have them returned. I once lost a wallet though and it was returned without the money (I think the staff took it) it was in a place like @dmilliz found that 7gs. Based on my interaction with them , I had reasons to believe they got it back with the cash but shared it. But I was happy to receive all my cards and important docs- they took their reward - I was grateful 😊
I like how you trod careful and said " In a place like dmilliz found the 7g" LOL.
Yes sah them tek them reward and gaaawn or the person that gave it in, or somebody else found tek the funds and dash it back. So you see, me using the 7g and buying people drinks is justified in that environment. The karma was eliminated when the money was put to use to make other happy LOL .
@bearmol, I know you not a club man, but knowing what I know about that culture, I did what was practical and in line with the flow.
I understand your decision @dmilliz. Its interesting that the less than honest experiences or the perception of dishonesty that you and @missaj had were not in Japanese owned establishments. It begs the question what is it about the culture that makes honesty in situations like this the norm.
It may have something to do with the law/rule that @missaj hinted at coupled with the fact that there are cameras in most public spaces. Or it could just be that the culture has high standards of morality in situations like the one in question.
Haffi trod careful on these internet streets 😂
Lol. Have to bro
It's so funny that you're mentioning this! Just the other day, we were talking about how someone found my wallet after I left it in the grocery cart.
When I called up the store looking for it (since I realized that was the last place I had it) they said someone has just returned it and I could pick it up.
When I did, everything was there!
However, I had another incident that is making me laugh!!!! When I dealt with a thief ...and it's making me want to do a video about it hahahhahaha
Wonderful post, and I'm so glad that this happens often in Japan!
Now I see your profile... A Jamaican man living in Japan!!!! How interesting!!!!
It reminds me of my friend @kenechukwu97 who is Nigerian wanting to live in Korea! Hehehe
And I'm an American wanting to have as many adventures as possible hehehehe
Hi @dreemsteem
Thanks for dropping by and reading my post. Being in a environment where most people are honest gives us one less thing to worry about.
I'm glad that you were able to get back the wallet you left in your grocery cart.
Looking forward to watching more if your real and sobering videos.
Thanks again for the support.
Oh ...this one is not so sobering...hehehe
It's a bit lighter and meant to intrigue people but also let them laugh 😂
I'll check it out anyway. Thanks for sharing.
Hello @bearmol. I've heard of numerous stories of good deeds like this. On the other hand, I've also encountered not-so-good deeds.
Thanks for stopping by @justclickindiva. I appreciate it.
