Impressions of Alien: Romulus
I've never been a hardcore fan of the Alien franchise, I've seen almost all of them, but the truth is that few have aroused great emotions in me. I know that the xenomorph is a character that generates terror and intimidates by its extravagant and terrifying form, somehow I think that this villain is the one who has ridden the franchise on his shoulders and rightly so, I must recognize that he will be present among the cinematic villains of all time, but is he really bad, well, at least for the human race he is a threat, however, some might think that he simply follows his nature in his own way.
Alien: Romulus was released in 2024 and is curiously directed by Uruguayan Fede Alvarez who is known for directing the two “Don't Breath” movies and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot in 2022. Those who star are actors who for are very little known, we have Cailee Spaeny, Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, among others. As everyone knows, the genre is horror and science fiction. This film is located chronologically between “Alien” (1979) and “Aliens” (1986), I thought it was interesting to clarify this because it is known that there are many films in this franchise and that is something that can become confusing.
This film takes us to the year 2142 and the planet LV-410, more specifically to the colony Jackson's Star, there a girl tries to end labor relations with the company Weyland-Yutani, but is rehired by force, so in her discontent she plans with a group of friends and her android partner to move in a spaceship to another abandoned spaceship that is very close to the orbit of the planet. The intention is to recover certain elements that would allow them to flee to another planet to get away from the yoke of the Weyland-Yutani company.
This is how they arrive at the Romulus, this ship looks abandoned and with signs of serious damage, but the boys insistently try to execute their plan. However, little by little they will understand that in the ship there is much more than damage and destruction, there await terrors that they never imagined they would find, so the struggle for survival begins desperately.
I must say that in terms of special effects the film is fine, even in terms of acting it is acceptable, but it does not escape from the well known clichés of the genre and that is something I regret since I saw this film hoping to see something that would leave a distinctive mark in the franchise. We must take into account that nowadays it is much easier to develop stories since there are better technological and budgetary resources, but despite that this film fails to take advantage of these advantages and in that sense I feel that there was a low effort or simply little creativity on the part of the screenwriters.
For me this movie became one more of the pile of the long repertoire of science fiction films, it left nothing shocking in me and it is likely that in the short term I will forget it, and while it is true that at some point it can be entertaining, I know that there are other films in this franchise that are much better and more interesting, such as Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, those I did like much more. Anyway, if you are looking for a movie that you want to be entertained for a while you can watch Alien: Romulus, but I warn you not to expect too much. My score for this movie is 5.5/10.

Watched this recently and I felt the movie had a slow start, but they made up for it with a believable storyline, although this is a well known pattern (Human finds alien, alien tries to kill human).
I felt the aliens looked like something I would believe, and the action was quite ok, but then there was no wow factor about the movie. And just like you mentioned, I'd almost forgotten about it until I came across it now, so it's quite easily forgettable.
Definitely an easily forgettable film, while it may be entertaining, it leaves nothing shocking in the viewer.
Saludos!
Such a low score for Romulus, as a fan of the Alien film series I think this movie was pretty decent. In my opinion, the best installments are Alien and Aliens and the worst are Alien 3 and Covenant.
