Mushroom Monday - Red
Here are some red mushroom species for this #mushroommonday
This first mushroom is Hygrocybe coccinea with a common name of scarlet hood.
I found quite a few of them in Northern Wisconsin and Northern Michigan.
They seem to like the thick dark forests up there and stick out like a sore thumb in the underbrush.
These are edible as well but not often collected as they grow when better edible mushrooms like chanterelles are also growing. Their taste is pretty mild and they lose their color after cooking.
Did somebody drop a raspberry on an old wooden log?
This is of course raspberry slime mold aka Tubifera ferruginosa.
This one is probably not poisonous and if you try and harvest it you will just slime your hand. So eating this would not be recommended unless you are a slug.
Here is Russula emetica aka the sickener. They start out slightly pink like this then get really red with age.
This one is more open and has a bit more red color. Sadly these are common in my area and not many of the more edible russula species seem to grow.
Here is a piece of Russula emetica in a deep dark red. I should try and find a good example of a fully grown red one this year. The slugs and bugs really get to them though, I think that is what happened here.
That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
Beautiful mushrooms! I've always found them fascinating. 😁 Thanks for sharing!
So many varieties to still discover too.
Bright popping reds! I like the brighter colored mushrooms. We get lots of Russula emetica here too.
Yeah too bad they cause stomache aches. There is a similar rosy brittlegill with a red stem that is edible.
raspberry slime mold is a charming find!
Pretty common in early summer. Much nicer looking than the dog vomit mold that is similar. I also love finding the chocolate tube slime mold.
