Cripta Arqueológica Museu - Alcácer do Sal // Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

CRIPTA ARQUEOLÓGICA MUSEU - ALCÁCER DO SAL.jpg

We returned to Alcácer do Sal as one day is not enough to see everything, and we decided to explore one of its treasures: the Archaeological Crypt of the Castle, a museum that offers a journey through the stories that make up this place.

Located under the old Alcácer do Sal Castle, the Archaeological Crypt is an underground museum that reveals the complex history of occupation of this region. This museum is one of the largest and most important (of its kind) in Portugal, witnessing the continuity of life from the Bronze Age to medieval times.

As we enter the crypt, we are enveloped by the mysterious atmosphere and space. The low lights and almost absolute silence show the importance of the archaeological finds preserved there. The paths guide us along a route that crosses different eras and civilizations, from the first inhabitants to the Muslims and, later, the Christians who shaped the city as it is today.

The history of the Archaeological Crypt begins with excavations carried out during the 90s, when work carried out to restore the castle revealed an archaeological treasure. The excavations reveal a sequence of remains that tell the continuous story of human occupation over more than 2,500 years. In 2008, the crypt was opened as a museum, opening its doors to the public allowing them to discover this heritage.

What caught my attention the most were Iron Age housing structures and traces of Roman occupation, which include fish salting tanks and public buildings. Regarding the Islamic period, this is represented by architectural elements, such as walls and cisterns, which demonstrate the importance of Alcácer do Sal during Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula. We also find traces from medieval Christian times, which show the transformation of the city after the Reconquista.

In the center of the crypt, it was possible to watch a video with more detailed information about life over the centuries, with graphic representations and videos that help to contextualize the findings. It ends up being easier for little ones to understand what is on display here, what period it belongs to and what it was used for.

This visit to the Archaeological Crypt was like a time machine visit to the past, which made us understand a little more about the history of Alcácer do Sal.
The Castle and some other beautiful elements of this city are still missing, which are for another day!

I don't think I've ever heard of an archaeological crypt, I'm used to seeing only rather gloomy crypts, but this idea of a museum that has such a detailed collection and that allows you to delve into so much of ancient customs seems wonderful to me.there are beautiful works.
