Apulia (Esposende) - Moinhos de Vento / Riding Portugal

The day was clear and sunny, with the blue sky announcing the arrival of a radiant spring (I hope). We decided to take a trip to the windmills of Apulia, a small paradise on the coast of northern Portugal. It's impossible to resist the beauty of the moment, and the promise of a beautiful day made the decision even easier. We wanted to explore and discover more about the history these mills hold.

O dia estava claro e soalheiro, com o céu azul a anunciar a chegada de uma primavera radiante (espero eu). Decidimos fazer um passeio aos moinhos da Apulia, um pequeno paraíso no litoral do norte de Portugal. É impossível resistir à beleza do momento, e a promessa de um dia bonito tornou a decisão ainda mais fácil. Queríamos explorar e a descobrir mais sobre a história que esses moinhos guardam.

Arriving in Apulia, a picturesque village on the coast of Esposende, we parked the car in front of the sea. The gentle sea breeze mixed with the aroma of the flowers that were beginning to bloom, indicating the arrival of the season of fresh colors and aromas.
Looking to the left, we immediately see the first mill and the walkway built so that everyone can see the 5 up close.

Chegados à Apulia, uma vila pitoresca da costa de Esposende, estacionamos o carro em frente ao mar. A brisa suave da maresia misturava-se com o aroma das flores que começam a desabrochar, indicando a chegada da estação das cores e dos aromas frescos.
Ao olhar para o lado esquerdo avistamos logo o primeiro moinho e o passadiço construído para que todos possam ver os 5 de perto.

The Apulian mills, known by many as "windmills", are one of the most important landmarks in this region. They stand proudly against the horizon, looking almost like guardians of the coastline. These mills, built throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, were essential for grinding wheat, which, at that time, was the main source of income for the local population. At a time when mechanization had not yet arrived, windmills were essential for flour production, and were also a symbol of the strength and ingenuity of the people of that area.

Os moinhos da Apulia, conhecidos por muitos como "moinhos de vento", são um dos marcos mais importantes desta região. Erguem-se orgulhosamente contra o horizonte, parecendo quase guardiões do litoral. Estes moinhos, construídos ao longo dos séculos XVII e XVIII, eram fundamentais para a moagem do trigo, que, naquela altura, era o principal sustento da população local. Numa altura em que a mecanização ainda não se fizera presente, os moinhos de vento eram essenciais para a produção de farinha, sendo também símbolo da força e engenho do povo daquela zona.

Each mill has its own personality, with its old wooden blades still visible, some already worn by time, but which still manage to tell us the story of past generations. It is fascinating to observe how the wind, which today seems to us just a pleasant breeze, once played such a fundamental role in the lives of the people who lived there.

Cada moinho tem a sua própria personalidade, com as suas velhas pás de madeira ainda visíveis, algumas já desgastadas pelo tempo, mas que ainda conseguem nos contar a história das gerações passadas. É fascinante observar como o vento, que hoje nos parece apenas uma brisa agradável, já teve um papel tão fundamental na vida das pessoas que ali viveram.

The mills of Apulia are not only witnesses to the past, but also a source of inspiration for those who visit them. The landscape that surrounds them is breathtaking. On one side, the sea reflects the golden rays of the sun, creating a spectacle of colors that changes every moment. On the other, the land begins to flourish, with green and colorful fields, which contrast with the intense blue of the sky. The scenery is a true masterpiece.

Os moinhos da Apulia não são apenas testemunhas do passado, mas também uma fonte de inspiração para quem os visita. A paisagem que os envolve é deslumbrante. De um lado, o mar reflete os raios dourados do sol, criando um espetáculo de cores que muda a cada instante. Do outro, a terra começa a florescer, com campos verdes e coloridos, que contrastam com o azul intenso do céu. O cenário é uma verdadeira obra-prima.

As I walked through the mills, it was impossible not to imagine the men and women who once worked hard there to ensure their families had bread on the table. The strength of the wind and the skill of the millers were the essential ingredients for the production of flour, and the characteristic sound of the blades turning in the wind still echoes in my memory. Today, the mills are largely deactivated, but are cared for as part of the region's historical and cultural heritage.

Enquanto caminhava por entre os moinhos, era impossível não imaginar os homens e mulheres que, no passado, ali trabalharam arduamente para garantir que as suas famílias tivessem pão à mesa. A força do vento e a habilidade dos moleiros eram os ingredientes essenciais para a produção de farinha, e o som característico das pás a girar ao sabor do vento ainda ecoa na minha memória. Hoje, os moinhos estão em grande parte desativados, mas são cuidados como património histórico e cultural da região.

Visiting these mills is a true journey back in time. At every step, it is possible to feel the presence of the past, but also the strength of nature and the importance of preserving what connects us to our identity.
This tour of the windmills of Apulia is, without a doubt, a unique experience. It's not just about the beauty of the landscape or the tranquility of the place, but also about the connection we can establish with our past, our roots and our history. Each stone, each mill, each gesture of nature is part of a legacy that, even as the years go by, remains relevant and inspiring.

A visita a estes moinhos é uma verdadeira viagem no tempo. A cada passo, é possível sentir a presença do passado, mas também a força da natureza e a importância da preservação daquilo que nos liga à nossa identidade.
Este passeio aos moinhos da Apulia é, sem dúvida, uma experiência única. Não é apenas sobre a beleza da paisagem ou a tranquilidade do lugar, mas também sobre a ligação que podemos estabelecer com o nosso passado, as nossas raízes e a nossa história. Cada pedra, cada moinho, cada gesto da natureza faz parte de um legado que, mesmo com o passar dos anos, continua a ser relevante e inspirador.
