Ankara - A Day in the Capital of Turkey | Başkentte Bir Gün (English - Turkish)

Hello dear friends. I’m in Ankara today and I’m happy to be here. This year I took the university entrance exams and was accepted into one of the programs I wanted to study. I came to the university in Ankara and completed my registration. I’ll be living here part-time from now on. After finishing the procedures, I had the chance to explore the capital quite a bit. I visited Ankara Castle, Anıtkabir, the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and a few other places. I celebrated in my own way. It was a great day. There are still many places to visit, but I’ll save those for future trips. I am currently attending my second university. This year I will also enroll in an additional undergraduate program and a master’s program. This means I will travel a lot and work hard. Writing my goals on the blockchain has paid off. I recommend you try it too. 😊

Merhaba sevgili dostlar. Bugün Ankara'dayım ve bundan dolayı çok mutluyum. Çünkü bu yıl üniversite sınavlarına girdim ve okumak istediğim bölümlerden birini kazandım. Bugün Ankara'daki üniversiteye gelip kayıt yaptırdım. Artık bir ayağım burada olacak. İşlemler tamamlandıktan sonra başkentte bol bol gezdim. Ankara Kalesi, Anıtkabir, Anadolu Medeniyetleri Müzesi ve birkaç yeri daha ziyaret ettim. Kendimce bir kutlama yaptım. Güzel bir gün geçirdim. Daha gezilecek çok yer vardı, onları da sonraki ziyaretlerime bıraktım. Bu ikinci üniversitem. Bu yıl bir lisans ve bir yüksek lisans programına daha kayıt olacağım. Bu da çok gezeceğim ve çok çalışacağım anlamına geliyor. Hayallerimi blockchaine yazmak işe yaradı. Sizlere de tavsiye ederim. 😊

Ankara is located in the center of Turkey. This central location has played a role in it serving as the capital of the Republic of Turkey for 101 years. In the past it was the capital of the Phrygians and later the Galatians and has hosted many mysterious civilizations like the Hittites. Ankara is famous for its cats, goats, bagels and many other things I can't even count. While it’s said to be cold in winter and hot in summer, I didn’t find it too hot compared to Antalya. Since Ankara doesn’t have humidity, walking around is much more comfortable. I can say that the gentle breeze that blew from time to time while I was at Anıtkabir made my visit even more enjoyable.

Ankara Türkiye'nin merkezinde yer alıyor. Bu özelliğinin 101 yıldır Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'ne başkentlik yapmasında da etkisi olmuştur. Geçmişte Friglerin, daha sonra Galatların da başkenti olmuş, Hititler gibi birçok gizemli uygarlığa ev sahipliği yapmış, kedisiyle, keçisiyle, simidiyle ve daha sayamadığım pek çok şeyiyle ünlü bir ilimiz. Kışın soğuk, yazın sıcak olduğu söylense de ben Antalya ile kıyasladığımda çok sıcak bulmadım. Ankara'da nem olmadığı için dolaşmak çok daha rahat. Anıtkabir'deyken zaman zaman esen hafif rüzgarın gezimi daha keyifli hale getirdiğini söyleyebilirim.

It had been a long time since I last visited Ankara. In fact when I returned from abroad at the age of 14, Ankara was the first city I visited. I got off the plane and took in what I saw. It was one of those cold and dark days. To be honest I didn’t like it very much. For a child of that age, it was too serious a place. I had imagined Turkey would be more fun. Fortunately, it was a short stay. They put us on buses and sent us to Istanbul. I came back here a few more times after that, but I didn’t have much opportunity to explore. I don’t know Ankara at all. Today I tried to find my way using navigation. When that wasn’t enough, I asked for help from the people around me. I found the people of Ankara very friendly and I really liked them. The only problem was that they thought I was a tourist. In fact two different people at Ankara Castle tried to communicate with me in English. At first I didn’t let it show, but then I thought "enough is enough" and some funny situations arose. Next time I’ll come wearing more local-style clothes. For me being a tourist is typically a short visit of just three days. 😊

Ankara'ya gelmeyeli uzun zaman olmuştu. Aslında 14 yaşımda yurt dışından geldiğimde ilk ayak bastığım şehir Ankara'ydı. Uçaktan inip gördüklerimi inceledim. Soğuk ve karanlık günlerden biriydi. Açıkçası pek beğenmedim. O yaştaki bir çocuk için fazla ciddi bir yerdi. Türkiye'nin daha eğlenceli olacağını hayal etmiştim. Neyse ki kısa sürdü, bizi otobüslere bindirip İstanbul'a gönderdiler. Daha sonra buraya birkaç kez daha geldim ama fazla gezme fırsatım olmadı. Ankara'yı hiç bilmiyorum. Bugün navigasyonla yolumu bulmaya çalıştım. Yetersiz kaldığında çevredekilerden yardım istedim. Ankara halkını çok dost canlısı buldum, çok beğendim. Tek sorun benim turist olduğumu düşünmeleriydi. Hatta Ankara Kalesi'nde iki farklı kişi İngilizce iletişim kurmaya çalıştı. İlk başta çok bozuntuya vermedim ama sonra artık yeter dedim ve çok komik durumlar ortaya çıktı. Bir dahaki sefere daha yerel tarzda kıyafetlerle geleceğim. Bizde turistlik 3 gün. 😊

Atatürk's Mausoleum - Anıtkabir

I wanted to start my trip with a visit to Anıtkabir. When you think of Ankara this is undoubtedly one of the first places that comes to mind. This site is home to the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey. Inside this structure, which is visited by hundreds of people every day, there are exhibitions, museums, the Lion Road and the burial chamber where Atatürk's sarcophagus is located. While I was here, I also wanted to pay my respects to Atatürk.

Gezime Anıtkabir ziyaretimle başlamak istedim. Ankara denince akla ilk gelen yerlerden biri şüphesiz burası. Bu yer Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin kurucusu ve ilk cumhurbaşkanı Mustafa Kemal Atatürk'ün anıt mezarına ev sahipliği yapmaktadır. Her gün yüzlerce kişinin ziyaret ettiği bu yapının içerisinde sergiler, müzeler, aslanlı yol, Atatürk'ün lahdinin bulunduğu mezar odası gibi bölümler yer alıyor. Gelmişken ben de Atamızı ziyaret etmek istedim.

While searching for Anıtkabir, my navigation system led me to a military base-like place. When a soldier inside asked "Are you looking for Anıtkabir?" I realized this wasn't the first time it had happened. He then gave me directions. Along the way amazing trees and birds accompanied me. I also really liked the bike paths. As I walked, I was already planning to bring my bike next time. After walking for about 15-20 minutes I reached my destination.

Anıtkabir'i ararken navigasyon beni askeri üs benzeri bir yere götürdü. İçeriden bir asker "Anıtkabir'i mi arıyorsunuz?" diye sorduğunda bunu ilk kez yaşamadıklarını anladım. Daha sonra bana yolu tarif etti. Yol boyunca çok güzel ağaçlar ve kuşlar bana eşlik etti. Ayrıca bisiklet yollarını da çok beğendim. Yürürken bir dahaki sefere bisikletimi de getirme planları yapıyordum. Yaklaşık 15-20 dakika yürüdükten sonra hedefe vardım.

Taking photos was prohibited at the entrance. Luckily, this restriction was lifted after a certain point. What made me the happiest was that they took my extra items and gave me a receipt in return. This allowed me to walk around comfortably with just my laptop bag. Admission was free. They accept visitors every day until 5 p.m.

Girişte fotoğraf çekmek yasaktı. Neyse ki belli bir noktadan sonra bu yasak kalktı. Beni en çok sevindiren şey elimdeki ıvır zıvırı alıp yerine makbuz vermeleriydi. Bu sayede sadece laptop çantamla rahatça dolaşabildim. Giriş ücretsizdi. Her gün akşam saat beşe kadar ziyaretçi kabul ediyorlar.

The soldiers standing guard without moving were a center of attention for everyone, from children to adults. I had heard that they undergo a certain endurance test. Of course, I didn’t get the chance to ask them if that was true. 😊

Hareketsiz nöbet tutan askerler, çocuklardan yetişkinlere kadar herkesin ilgi odağıydi. Belli bir dayanıklılık testinden geçirildiklerini duymuştum. Tabii onlara bunun doğru olup olmadığını sorma şansım olmadı. 😊

Atatürk's tomb was very crowded. There is a tomb here, but the actual burial place is beneath this structure. In the exhibitions and museums, you can see Atatürk’s photographs, personal belongings, books he read and many other items. Both from the burial chamber and from other parts of the site, you can enjoy a magnificent view of Ankara.

Atatürk'ün mezarı çok kalabalıktı. Burada bir mezar var ama aslında gerçek mezar bu yapının altında. Sergi ve müzelerde Atatürk'ün fotoğrafları, kişisel eşyaları, okuduğu kitaplar ve daha birçok eşya sergileniyor. Hem mezar odasından hem de diğer bölümlerden muhteşem bir Ankara manzarası açılmakta.

The Lion Road is also one of the amazing sections of the structure. There are lion statues on both sides of the path. One of the most interesting features of this road is the irregular placement of the stones. This way as people walk, they naturally stumble and look down, creating an atmosphere where everyone shows respect.

Aslanlı yol da bu güzel bölümlerden biri. Yolun her iki yanında aslan heykelleri var. Bu yolun en ilginç özelliklerinden biri de taşların düzensiz yerleştirilmesi. Böylece insanlar bu yolda yürürken ister istemez takılıp yere bakıyorlar. Yani herkesin saygı gösterdiği bir ortam oluşuyor.

After visiting the souvenir section, I had a coffee at the museum’s café and then set my course for Ankara castle. I passed through a lovely park full of pigeons.

Hediyelik eşyaların satıldığı bölümü gezdikten sonra müzenin kafesinde kahve içtim ve rotamı Ankara Kalesi'ne çevirdim. Güvercinli güzel bir parkın içinden geçtim.

Finding Ankara Castle wasn't too difficult for me. I first reached Ankara’s popular district Ulus. After that following the signs was enough. After walking for a while, the castle became visible on the hill.

Ankara kalesi'ni bulmak benim için çok zor olmadı. Önce Ankara'nın Ulus adlı popüler semtine ulaştım. Sonrasında işaretleri takip etmek yetti Zaten bir süre yürüdükten sonra kale tepede görünür hale geldi.

While I was there, I couldn’t resist having an Ankara simit. Simit is a traditional Turkish bread covered with sesame seeds. I wasn’t very hungry yet, but I bought one from a simit seller along the way and continued on my path.

Gitmişken bir Ankara simidi yememek olmazdı. Henüz çok acıkmamıştım. Yolumun üstündeki bir simitçiden simit alıp yoluma devam ettim.

The Old Parliament Building - Eski Millet Meclisi

I was eating a simit while admiring the magnificent buildings on both sides of the road. Then I came across the old parliament building and decided to go inside and explore it.

Bir taraftan simit yiyip diğer taraftan yolun her iki tarafındaki muhteşem yapıları izliyordum. Sonra eski millet meclisi binasıyla karşılaştım ve içeriye girip burayı dolaştım.

It turns out there are many beautiful museums in Ulus. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to visit them all. So for now, I made a note of some of them. On my next trips, I won’t skip places like Ankara Palace, the War of Independence Museum, Erimtan Museum and the Rahmi Koç Museum, which I only saw from the outside today.

Ulus'ta çok sayıda güzel müze varmış. Hepsinin içine girecek kadar zamanım yoktu. Bu yüzden şimdilik bazılarını not aldım. Bir dahaki gezilerimde bugün dışarıdan gördüğüm Ankara Palace, Kurtuluş Savaşı Müzesi, Erimtan, Rahmi Koç Müzesi gibi yerleri de es geçmeyeceğim.

I passed by the Hacı Bayram-ı Veli Mosque. It really is as impressive as Evliya Çelebi described. This famous traveler visited many places in Ankara during his time there and documented his experiences. It’s a beautiful mosque. The Temple of Augustus should be somewhere around here as well. I’ll leave that for next time too.

A Meal Break at Hisar Kasrı - Hisar Kasrında Yemek Molası

When I reached the stairs of Ankara Castle, I was a bit hungry. I stopped by a café called Hisar Kasrı that I came across at the top. I ordered menemen and tea. Menemen is a traditional Turkish dish made with eggs, tomatoes, green peppers and spices. (Some people also add onions. I think it tastes better with onions) The view and atmosphere were wonderful. After resting for a while, I continued my climb up to the castle.

Ankara kalesinin merdivenlerine ulaştığımda biraz acıkmıştım. Yukarıda karşıma çıkan Hisar kasrı adlı kafeye uğradım. Burada menemen ve çay sipariş verdim. Manzara ve ortam çok güzeldi. Bir süre dinlendikten sonra kaleye çıkmaya devam ettim.

Ankara Castle - Ankara Kalesi

The history of Ankara Castle dates back to ancient times. The ancient Anatolian peoples built a fortress on this hill for defensive purposes. Over time every civilization that came through added something of their own to the castle. Even now restoration work is ongoing.

Ankara kalesinin tarihi çok eskilere dayanıyor. Eski Anadolu halkları bu tepede savunma amaçlı bir kale inşa etmişler. Sonrasında her gelen medeniyet kaleye kendisinden bir şey katmış. Şu anda da restorasyon çalışmaları devam ediyor.

At one point I got lost among the old houses. A little girl, maybe 7 or 8 years old, came up to me in the courtyard of one of the houses and gave me directions. After I walked away from their house, she called out from behind "My mom invites you for coffee." Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to say yes, but we agreed on next time.

Bir ara eski evlerin arasında kayboldum. Evlerden birinin avlusunda oynayan küçücük bir kız yanıma geldi ve bana yolu tarif etti. Belki 7 ya da en fazla 8 yaslarındaydı. Ben onların evinden uzaklaştıktan sonra arkadan seslendi. "Abla, annem seni kahve içmeye davet ediyor " diye. Zamansızlıktan evet diyemedim ama bir dahaki sefere diye anlaştık.

I found my way and happily began exploring the inside of the castle. I came across the Doll café. The inside felt more like a doll museum than a café. It was an amazing atmosphere. I didn’t want to leave, but there was a place nearby that I was very eager to see.

Yolumu bulup mutlu mesut bir şekilde kalenin içini dolaşmaya başladım. Bu Taş bebek kafeyi gördüm. İçerisi kafeden çok bebek müzesini andırıyordu. Harika bir ortamdı. Hiç ayrılmak istemiyordum ama çok görmek istediğim bir yer vardı yakında.

Museum of Anatolian Civilizations - Anadolu Medeniyetleri Müzesi

The museum exhibits artifacts from the ancient peoples who lived in Anatolia. Every piece has been carefully curated. The Phrygian and Hittite artifacts in the sculptures section are particularly extraordinary. It’s hard to choose from hundreds of items, but I want to share a few of my favorites.

Müzede antik dönemlerde Anadolu'da yaşamış olan halklardan kalma eserler sergileniyor. Tüm eserler özenle seçilmiş. Özellikle heykeller bölümündeki Frig ve Hitit eserleri olağanüstü. Yüzlerce eser arasından seçim yapmak çok zor. Ben en çok beğendiklerimden bazılarını paylaşmak istiyorum.

At the entrance of the museum, I was greeted by these lions, making me feel as though I was entering a city from the Hittite era. The Hittites were one of the most mysterious civilizations in Anatolia. From the artifacts they left behind, it is evident that they achieved advanced technology and civilization in the Bronze Age. Yet they mysteriously disappeared from history. The first traces of the Hittites were found in the city now known as Çorum. The ancient city of Hattusa, which I’m eager to visit, is located there. Hattusa was the capital of the Hittite empire. These lions were found during excavations in Aslantepe. They were made of limestone and guarded the palace gate.

Müzenin girişinde beni bu aslanlar karşıladığında sanki Hititler döneminden bir şehre giriyormuşum gibi hissettim. Hititler Anadolu'nun en gizemli uygarlıklarından biridir. Tunç çağında dönemlerinin çok ilerisinde bir teknoloji ve medeniyete ulaştıkları arkalarında bıraktıkları eserlerden anlaşılıyor. Fakat sonrasında sırra kadem basıyorlar ve tarih sahnesinden bir anda siliniyorlar. Hititlere ait ilk izler şu anda Çorum olarak bilinen şehirde bulunmuş. Burada görmeği çok istediğim Hattuşa adlı antik şehir yer alıyor. Hattuşa Hitit imparatorluğunun başkentiydi. Bu aslanlar Aslentepe'deki kazılarda bulunmuş. Saray kapısını koruyan aslanlar kireçtaşından yapılmış.

One of my favorite pieces is the statue of a king named Mutallu. The statue was found at the entrance of the palace during excavations at Aslantepe. Mutallu has a unique presence with his sandals, shawl and the cup or sword hilt he holds. It’s a statue from the late Hittite period.

En çok beğendiğim eserlerden biri Mutallu adlı bu kralın heykeli oldu. Heykel Aslantepe'de yapılan kazılarda sarayın girişinde bulunmuş. Sandaletleriyle, şalıyla, elinde tuttuğu kadeh ya da kılıç kabzasıyla bambaşka bir havası var Mutallu'nun. Geç Hitit dönemine ait bir heykel.

Another striking piece from Aslantepe is a sacrificial scene. It depicts a princess and her son Tuwatis sacrificing a goat to a god. Several different sacrificial and hunting scenes are displayed in this section.

Yine Aslantepe'den bir kurban sahnesi. Prenses ve oğlu Tuwatis tanrıya keçi kurban ederken resmedilmiş. Bu bölümde birkaç farklı kurban ve av sahnesi sergileniyor.

A goddess orthostat found in Karkamış, Gaziantep depicts a goddess holding a pomegranate. Her name is Kubaba, a deity worshipped by the Hittites and Phrygians and later known as Cybele in other civilizations. There are also Cybele statues on display in the museum.

Gaziantep Kargamış'ta bulunan bir tanrıça ortostatı. Elinde nar tutan tanrıçanın adı Kubaba. Hitit ve Frigler tarafından kabul gören bu tanrıçayı sonralar diğer uygarlıklarda Kibele olarak görüyoruz. Müzede Kibele heykelleri de sergilenmekte.

The Anatolian sphinx is another fascinating piece. The Hittites placed protective figures at important gates and this sphinx was placed at a gate in Alacahöyük.

Anadolu sfenksi. Hititler önemli kapılara birer koruyucu koyarlardı. Bu sfenksi de Alacahöyük'teki bir kapıya yerleştirmişler.

Another sphinx from the Hittites, found in Sakçagözü, Gaziantep has a human head, a lion’s body and wings. Like many other figures it is bearded.

Hititlerden kalma bir başka sfenks. Antep Sakçagözü'nden bulunan figürlerden. İnsan başlı, aslan gövdeli, kanatlı bir yaratık. Birçok figür gibi bu da sakallı.

Figures with bird heads and human bodies are also common. This mythical creature is known as a griffin.

Kuş başlı insan vücutlu figürler de yaygın. Bu efsanevi yaratık grifon olarak bilinir.

The legendary Chimera is depicted with a bird’s head in its tail and both human and lion heads.

There are also numerous terracotta and bronze vessels, pithoi, ceremonial and wine containers and other pottery items.

Pişmiş topraktan ve tunçtan yapılmış çok sayıda kaplar, pithoslar, tören ve şarap kapları ve diğer tabak çanaklar.

The museum building itself is awe-inspiring. It is housed in an old caravanserai and its walls are adorned with various decorations.

Müzenin kendisi de hayranlık uyandırıyor. Eski bir kervansaray binası burası. Duvarları çeşitli süslemelerle dolu.

National Library - Milli Kütüphane

After the museum I came down from the hill to the city and visited the National Library, where I became a member. Since I'm now a student in this city, I'll need to visit the library frequently. The only thing I didn’t like is that it closes at night. In this regard the Antalya Library is much better as it’s open 24 hours.

Müzeden sonra dağdan şehre inip Milli kütüphaneyi ziyaret ettim ve buraya üye oldum. Artık bu şehirde öğrenci olduğuma göre kütüphaneye sıkça ziyaret etmem gerekecek. Tek beğenmediğim tarafı geceleri kapanması. Antalya kütüphanesi bu açıdan oldukça iyi. 24 saat açık.

It was a great day, but it's time for me to leave Ankara. I’ll be hitting the road soon. If you ever find yourself in Ankara, I recommend visiting these beautiful places. My heart is still at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and I’m already looking forward to the day I can visit it again.
