Coronavirus acting as a bacteriophage!

Stumbled upon a really cool new paper today, thought to share it for those of you interested in the subject.
The tldr is that it seems the novel coronavirus may also act as a bacteriophage in the gastrointestinal tract, infecting bacteria and not just our cells
Our recent studies show that microorganisms in the human gastrointestinal tract affect the severity of COVID-19 and for the first time provide indications that the virus might replicate in gut bacteria.
Definitely way out of my expertise so I can't comment on the quality of the study but an interesting paper nonetheless with lots of implications if true. I must say I found the discussion part to be quite an interesting read!

The wikipedia article you referenced indicates that bacteriophages have been a subject of intense research at virology labs for the last several decades. The suggestion is that laboratories could engineer a bacteriophage that attacks select drug resistant viruses.
That would be helpful.
Hey, you know, if one combined bacteriophages with highly infectious viruses, then one could create a mechanism to deliver bacteriophages to the entire population at once. This sounds like the exciting type of gain of function research that would intrigue leading public health experts like Dr. Fauci.
But, since public health industry is driven by an altruistic motive to serve the community at large and not by oversized egos, we can say with certainty that such ideas never crossed anyone one's mind.
I saw one of these coronavirus hanging on the ceiling. It was in the Hotel. I know it was a decoration, about 1 metre in diameter. But that's what it looked like seriously !
I'm cautious whenever a new coronavirus paper is published because they tend to be fast-tracked through the review process. It will take more years before we will truly understand what it can and can't do
