This Saturday has been full of calm and tranquility for me. It has rained, we have had electrical failures, also momentary loss of cell phone and Internet signal, but in general, it has been a nice calm day. At this point, in #Venezuela, one does not complain so much about the failure of services or their poor quality, in addition to the decrease in quality of life, after all, although it is true that complaining has a bit of catharsis, to let out the anger and pain, in reality it no longer feels like it helps much and one begins to "normalize" the state of things, we begin to consider all this decadent state as common, so we stop comparing it with what we had a couple of decades ago, and we try to keep our sanity and our minds focused on simply surviving.

Reviewing the ephemeris of the day a little, I found that: Today, in 1961, Ernest Hemingway, American writer, novelist and man of a hectic and fascinating life, dies. My first contact with this author was when he was a child and my school gave me homework to read his novel "The Old Man and the Sea", it really is good, easy to read in my opinion. Then I took an interest in it and reviewed others of his works, in adolescence I remember "A Farewell to Arms" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls", in all cases, there was a tendency to leave a bitter taste at the end, always showing the struggles to achieve great things and see how, one way or another, reality prevailed and crushed the dreams of the protagonists of the novels... in general, I like stories that have a "good" ending, a type of ending that I do not expect to find in real life, but what I long for in fiction, because it is a consolation. Because of this characteristic of my personality, I always find it strange that I like the works of #Hemingway, he always seems to go against that style, but even so, I liked his novels and I read them a lot.

Of his novels, the one that I thought fit the day is one that precisely reflects on death and its effects on the lives of those who survive, because it is something to think about, after all, it is like Stoic philosophical thought of Seneca, when he pointed out the idea that one should not cry for the dead, that they would no longer suffer this world, its lies, betrayals and corruptions, but that one could cry for those of us who are still alive... it sounds very pessimistic , but it is, after all, a way of enduring grief and accepting pain. In the novel in which I use his image as the cover of this post, the opening quote is quite good to understand the whole plot, especially in the part where it says:

... "any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.." - John Donne, Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions, Meditation XVII (1624)

We are all connected in this thing we call Humanity, so every life that is extinguished affects us and takes away a world of potential possibilities, just as every birth is a new promise of possible futures.

Well, that was all I wanted to share, on this day 841 since the #Quarantine was declared here for the #COVID-19 #Pandemic, which, it seems, is already worsening again and the number of infections per week has increased again, so we would be entering a new wave. I wish you well and that we can read each other another time.

I have heart about Ernest Hemingway but never read any novels of him. But, what I came to know about the ending of this novels, I think I am not gonna try any of them!

Sorry to hear about the COVID condition there. It is sad to hear that the condition is worsening. In Oman, it looks stable. I have stopped keeping an eye on the stat!!

Anyway, enjoy your calm day!

Thanks for comment. Certainly, the style of this author seems to guide him to leave a bittersweet ending, sometimes the Great Goal that was pursued is achieved, but almost always in a way that the protagonists will not be happy.

Regarding the infections here, our official statistics are quite questionable, but the information we have shows that it cannot be controlled, every time it decreases, the following fortnight it is seen to increase again, largely because the security measures and people get used to being in constant risk, so they lower their level of care.

Be well and have a good day.
