Christmas and hot coffee (Navidad y cafe calientito) [EN/ES]
Christmas and hot coffee
December has arrived with its joy, they say around here... People are starting to feel the Christmas atmosphere. The green, white, and red take over this month. It is when family unity becomes stronger between songs and sincere smiles.
I am already ready with the decorations to get in tune with these special dates. I always remember how we used to gather with the family around the manger to pray novenas, sing carols, and eat empanadas, fritters, and custard...
In these meetings, the delicious aroma of coffee was always present, which served as a companion, especially in this cold season that we live in, and we warmed up with a cup of piping hot coffee, preferably fresh from the coffee maker.
At this time of year, hot coffee reaches the soul, lifts our spirits, and gives us the energy we need when the day gets very heavy. We meet as a family every night during 'novenas' (prayers), and we usually drink hot coffee to warm our bodies.
It is usually accompanied by a sandwich, bread, or empanada, among other things, and is given with much affection to those attending the ‘novena.’ Laughter and conversations flow more spontaneously as soon as caffeine enters the body.
During those nine days of magic and religious fervor, family ties with friends and neighbors become closer, resulting in more supportive and empathetic relationships with others.
For me, Christmas means family with love and union. Of course, one of the drinks that cannot be missed is a delicious cup of coffee to enjoy its exquisite flavor and aroma that we love when it is freshly prepared, and the smell filters through each nostril of each person who attends each night to the event.
Without a doubt, our beloved coffee will be there with its delicious aroma, always seeking to be that social catalyst that unites us, especially on these dates.
When December comes, I remember the 'novenas' at my beloved grandmother's house. When the night came, We were anxiously waiting with my brothers for the moment to leave, towards that humble little house full of love and peace.
When we arrived, she was waiting for us with a big smile and a sincere and deep love for us. She invited us to come in and take a seat, and then she went to the kitchen, and I followed her subtly to see what she was preparing. It was a very delicious Christmas recipe that fascinated each of us.
After the prayer, my grandmother got up from her chair and walked to the kitchen to serve what she had prepared in the afternoon. I remember that she took out the pewter cups, the most special for this time of year, and began to serve the dark delicacy, adding a little cinnamon to each cup to give it a Christmas flavor.
She brought out the empanadas that she knew best how to prepare, and after serving the coffee and empanadas on the trays, she asked me and a cousin to start serving each assistant. Each person's face lit up when they tasted the coffee, and the empanadas were like a trip to taste heaven.
People asked for more coffee and empanadas, and my grandmother gave them another round, and they were satisfied. She was very generous with everyone. Thus ended an evening of culinary delights and satisfied faces that said goodbye with a warm smile until the next night.
