Finding of a wonderful silver cup
Among the shelves of my grandparents' cellar, after having finally sorted the piled up boxes, we found many antique objects that my grandfather has accumulated over time and at a certain point kept in the cellar, probably starting to be too many objects in the house 😁
We have found a large silver cup, very interesting and well preserved, probably dating back to the first half of the twentieth century or perhaps even older. Unfortunately I have not found any further information on its origin, it is probable that my grandfather bought it in some used market.
The cup has a diameter of approximately 30 cm and is 17 cm high. It rests on a silver pedestal with designs resembling bird feathers. The finishes are simple and it is also quite heavy.
The detail that deserves attention are the handles of the cup, which have the appearance of mythological sea snakes, made in a detailed way. The caudal part is thinner and becomes more robust in the central body, from the appearance it seems a bit fragile but holding the handles instead it is firmly in place, no fear that it will break.
Another precious finish is found along the edge of the cup and is characterized by a figure that resembles a child or in any case a human figure intent on freeing itself from what appear to be sea waves, probably created by the sea snakes themselves.
Sea monster symbolic meaning
In French, the "sea serpent" (serpent de mer) is also a metaphor to indicate a project that never ends (or a subject) that nonetheless reappears periodically without ever materialising.
Probably this silver cup could be a collector's item combined with other objects, something like a set, often combined with cups or goblets. It would have been nice to be able to recover the whole collection but I would have to do some more research especially in the antique markets, also to get more information on the silver cup and its actual value.
There should be hallmarks stamped somewhere on this cup, often located underneath, that will give a clue to the material, maker, and year of manufacture.

the writings are not clearly visible, almost erased. Unfortunately it is not possible to have information
It seems to be a dragon at the top. This type of designs often were created in China and other neighboring countries.
yes, it could also be a dragon and therefore could have Chinese influence
bellissima! Si, potrebbe anche essere di fine '800 :)
Dovrei fare più ricerche 🧐
io le farei si, al massimo scopri una bella storia :)
Nice looking piece, It does look heavy for a cup. You don't find things like this these days around here. I bet you found a lot of other interesting things from the past down there too!

yes, i found many coins for example, i need to find time to catalog and do more research 😊
That's a nice size if it's got a decent fineness could be worth a fair melt value but also it could have a collector value so worth looking into
Yes, in fact I would like to have more details to know its possible value as a collector's item. Research time 🧐
