Original Story: "The Door", by bonzopoe

He looked carefully at the door again, the play of light and shadow generated in it by a pergola simulated claws that called him when moving with the wind. He thought the scene would be different, less anti-climactic, but there was no time to philosophize about it.

Behind was his life and ahead the door. There were no other options. He hesitated for an instant. He heard familiar voices from both sides calling out to him, and he didn't know what to do. Meanwhile the door began to open and the voices to fade. The contrast between light and shadow grew stronger and the claw painted with them seemed to dance in mockery of him.

Suddenly silence. The door had been fully opened but did not show its contents. The voices were heard again in the distance, and the door began to close, and there he was paralyzed by doubt and fear. The door closed and the voices roared for a moment before dying away.

He wiped the sweat from his forehead and looked back. His life was still there, but now it looked distant and blurred, almost unrecognizable. He wanted to open the door but couldn't. It had been opened and closed for the last time. Suddenly he no longer knew what he was doing there, or whose body was lying on the asphalt.

He turned to try to open the door once more, but it was gone. He turned to look at the body again, but it was gone, and the claw formed by light and shadow seemed to laugh at the wall. There was nothing around him, not even him; now he was just a ghost.
