In the beginning of a change, the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot. ~ Mark Twain
I love my country, the United States, and crowded as it usually is, I love the Washington, DC Metro area. So much to see and do, although it can get hairy here with the politics, on a normal basis, it is an interesting place, offering up free concerts/events at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, on their Millenial Stage at 6:30 pm every single night. Members of the National Symphony Orchestra will be playing chamber works in celebration of World Freedom Day, this Friday. I will be attending that, the only reason I know that one. To be honest, almost everything of the public nature is free here. The Smithsonian Museums, Art Museums, except private ones, usually have an entry fee.
The Jefferson Memorial is always the right place and the perfect time.
"...I have sworn upon the altar of god eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." - Jefferson to Dr. Benjamin Rush, September 23, 1800

Let's step into the day for our #WednesdayWalk with @tattoodjay, even though I am a day late and a dollar short. This particular challenge is a great way to get out shoot some photos, focus your thoughts, and see what you can see, giving in to a short distance to take a walk. Don't forget to look up and down, and all around. You never know what you might be missing! The walk down to the Tidal Basin brings me in view of the Jefferson Memorial, a beautiful piece of architecture on the Eastern Potomac River. It is dedicated to the third president of the United States and is the perfect place for a cup of coffee and your thoughts any morning. I can see the cherry trees that surround the Basin, almost leafless and unadorned, laying in wait for the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, next spring turning this town into a crowded traffic jam for a month. Oh, beauty! Welcome to Washington, DC!
Do you look up when you take a walk
Leaving the sidewalk for a peek at the trees
Craning your head, chin in the air
Do you look up when you begin to talk
Remembering to ponder what you will see
As you take this walk, this walk with me
Do you look up when you take a walk?
Supporting a long window, the architecture is a robustly-carved lion head. I love the artistry! Just beautiful.
A little further down Constitution Avenue is the Department of Commerce... Its reason in life is to function as a Cabinet in the government that promotes economic growth, mainly by creating jobs. Always looking up because there is something remarkable just waiting to be seen.
Walk on up to Constitution Avenue, where you would almost miss the Sculpture Garden if you weren't looking, I would have to say that the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden is one of my favorite places to go ice skating, it is never too crowded. That is a huge bonus in my book. It is also not what I consider your typical sculpture garden but rather a garden of sculptures. Just look at the tree. A real sculpture.
Joined together at the trunk, radiant in the polished winter shine. The gift of persistent shimmering, day or night, unites no truth to the alteration of its reality. Share their distinctive works of art — at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden.
Walking the paths of Arlington National Cemetery has long been a place I love, despite its being a cemetery, I find peace walking within its confines.
Life is like a changing tree, with brilliant colored leaves
Beauty in each season with peaks of intense shows
Life is meant for living and delighting in each new day
Even as I watch the change
Before my very eyes
One by one I see them go
Until the branches release them all.
For years, Rolling Thunder participants all came together to pay tribute to the servicemen and women. Thousands of bikers rolled through the city on their motorcycles to show respect and say thank you to all of those who have served the country. They ended its run in the nation's capital in 2019, citing a lack of cooperation from Pentagon officials and “increased harassment to our supporters and sponsors.” To be fair, there was no motorcycles, just the memory of why they aren't here, however, I did walk the Memorial Bridge.
All I have are my words, armed in my mind, written in pen, stand by stand. Oh, yes. Still by hand. It has a different feel. Altered not by keys, backspace, and delete, I write, erase, tear it to pieces and start all over again. And again.
It’s my way. I walk out to the deep end of the page and dive right in.
The Washington Monument. Can you see where the building stopped during a war, then continued after the war ended with Different colored bricks? I want to thank @tattoodjay for hosting the #WednesdayWalk and ElizaChang for the #MakeMeSmile Challenge. Have an amazing day!
The Naming of Cats
The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn’t just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.

I would love one day when Canada is indeed the home of the strong and free. I think I would love it there and could easily spend a month, perhaps in Spring.
You would love the Spring when everything is just starting to turn up the magic. I actually love it any time of the year, but, Spring is definitely best, and judging by the crowds, the most coveted time. :)
How is it blowing, beauty? I feel like I am living in my own little world right now. Thank you for stopping by, I am so lame now. I need to buy more time. Somewhere.
You Lame? Not a chance ❤️
Awwww. You are too kind. @geneeverett I am! I have not gotten around too much at all, struggling in my own little world, with time and lack of it. How are YOU???? I meant to check back in with you again, you are starting to worry me with still being down.
Thanks for stopping over! ❤️
Yes ... if only it were for sale.
I know, right. Seriously. They can sell NFTs, they should be able to find some time for sale.
Haha
Thank you for the highly informative and entertaining walk around Washington. I love the fact that so much is free, a fabulous idea. No wonder there are people everywhere.
And I agree dear Denise, cemeteries are highly interesting, austere and informative places. Arlington Cemetery is amazing with so much history and honour.
Wednesday walking posts are so full of diversity, entertainment and so much fun to read and join in with. Sending love❤️
ps: love how 'edit' automatically changes the spelling of words, it has a mind of its own. Thank the lord I re-read my work more often than not, hahaha.
Truth! Edit and Autocorrect hate me. I just know they do. I need to post earlier when I am not so tired or running out the door.
I just need a little me time. Me! Me! Me!
LOL Okay. I am over it now. :) Hi, Angie! I hope all is well with you. I have been in my own little corner, doing my thing and not hardly looking up and around me. It must be that winter is coming and I am getting ready to hibernate.
You know I never mind if a post is a day late, which yours isnt by the way, and your posts are never a dollar short
I didnt know it was World Freedom day on Friday how slack of me,
Thats so cool they have free events and places to visit there, that is so rare in most places around the world these days
Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)
Why did I think it was Thursday? Oh! I need to reset myself, all over again. It is World Freedom Day on Friday. Cool, huh? I wonder if there are any big plans for it.
I do love all the free events they have. The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is a big deal as all sorts of dignitaries attend there, and for anyone to be able to attend is a big deal. I think it allows the people to grow in ways they may not have been able to without the money to attend those types of things. The Smithsonian offers eleven museums and galleries on the National Mall plus six other museums and the National Zoo in the greater National Capital Area. There are two historical ones in NYC. Authorization to create two additional museums, the National Museum of the American Latino and National Women's History Museum, passed congress in 2020 as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021. The museums have not yet been created and the Smithsonian has two years to select the museums’ locations on or near the National Mall. So there will be more! All free. And so much more. I know it takes money to make them free, but, honestly, the US wastes so much money on questionnaires and things they don't need, I would think educating people would be a priority. Education should not be a money thing, but, an opportunity afforded to all.
I will get off my soapbox now. :)
Thanks so much @tattoodjay Have a great day!
Lol it’s easy to loose track of the days happens to all of us
I didn’t know they had approved those new museums but great there free not much is these days
Have a great day
You know, I've been to DC several times over the last few years and have not had the opportunity to really do a deep exploration of it. In fact I had just started using a metro card and figuring out the metro when Covid broke loose and kept me from traveling at all, so the card sits unused in my wallet.
It is one amazing city, honestly. I don't use the Metro that much. If in town, I walk everywhere or Uber if it is far enough. I have been known to hop a bus, although that is the least common denominator in my book, it is always fun when just exploring. :) I have taken the wrong bus before. Ha!
I have my Metro Pass and VRE keeping each other company in my wallet. However the Metro card does expire, so you may want to check that and you can always transfer to another card. Or frame it. :)
Gorgeous View and lovely capture!
Gorgeous it looks peaceful and a place I would love to live in ❤️
This is lovely work my dear lovely friend @dswigle. Hope you are doing well.
Thank you so much. It is a truly nice place, without any of the messy politics people seem to drag in. On a normal basis, it is a pleasant place to be.
Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words.
So patriotic! That was one thing that really struck me when I lived for a year in MA. Patriotic Americans. The South Africans used to be - the Afrikaaners are still - to some degree. Very thoughtful post @dswigle
I remember when South Africans were. Afrikaaners are, but, with less to lose, it is a little easier. I am saddened by the turn of events for your country.
Part of my problem is I have lived in very patriotic States (especially Texas) and am associated with the military. You cannot help but be patriotic. Honestly, if there was more of that, there would be less of the other.
But, you just don't go to the store and order it. It has to be felt with the soul. Well, you know that.
This is also true for the most valuable things. For example love.
Exactly.
Well put Denise! So a Texan AND an American. That explains a little more about you. Yes, I can imagine being associated with military enforces that. I had friends when I lived over in MA, the eldest son was in the airforce. He certainly was patriotic in a different and more defined way. And all soul. Definitely
Thanks so much!!!
Nice Washington DC Photography.
Thanks so much!
I am always a fan of the whit and wisdom of Mark Twain! Yes I need to get over to Washington to check out the monuments before they are taken away. I think it will be much easier when I am closer and the drive wont be some brutal.
Mark Twain surely knew his stuff. I am sure you will spend a lot of time in the Washington, DC downtown once you make your way to Virginia. Lots to see and do. In my opinion, the drive will be a lot easier from SML than Michigan.
Just saying.
It will still be brutal, don't fool yourself. :) Detroit and Chicago traffic combined.
