Dark times for South Africa

avatar

Dark times are ahead of us in South Africa as the national power grid continually fails to produce the required energy that the economy and inhabitants need to operate on.

This has massive effects on daily business and whole production lines have failed and forced closure, resulting on further loss of employment for those who seek jobs.

In the residential sector, all lives are being effected. Tonight, for instance, we have a load shedding slot from 4pm till 8pm. Four hours in the evening on a school night!

It is still late Summer but come Winter and we will be having a massive problem!

It's useless to try count up why this has happened. It does not fix the issue. The bottom line is that our national grid is run by a singular para-statal company called Eskom.

The lack of funding, maintenance and leadership together with an increase in corruption has led to a decline and break down of power generation capacity.

The population of South Africa has grown year after year and thus the need for more electricity has expanded.

Up till recently, there were prohibitive laws preventing the generation of power by 3rd party companies. A few weeks ago, too late I feel, those laws were changed.

Too little too few and I can only foresee further collapse of the electrical supply and infrastructure of the country.

Truly, this is a bit of doom and gloom, but it also sings to us of a Golden opportunity! If ever there could be a PUSH for self sustainability, then this is definitely one of those times!

Alternate sources of power for our devices, cooking, cleaning and refrigeration needs to be found or alternative methods need to be put into application to solve this energy crisis!

Perhaps then I will be able to post the way I should on Hive!

We shall see... I need to get busy...

Cheers!

Black outs since 2008 it's been a long time, sufficient time given for Indaba under the tree to come up with solutions to problems.

Time for complete change in ruling party, sooner better than later!

People have been far to complacent not voting, it matters not who you vote for, as long not ANC or EFF! PLEASE

I agree that we are long overdue for a change in the ruling party.

But to fix the problem will also take quite some time... We will need to be prepared!

If you go solar be sure to have a lock up storage area for batteries, they stealing not only the solar panels off houses, but batteries from telecommunication towers....

No win, we will never see the South Africa we once had again, well not in my lifetime.

No solution to the problem is going to be built in less than 2 years, and at the current pace by then there will be increased problems with the remaining aged coal power fleet. So I think we have to plan around it within our means. For middle class people I think this means a wifi UPS, lights and a way to cook with gas?

I've got a bit of gas (we cooked on gas tonight) and I use rechargeable LED lights for lighting.

We are used to poor electricity in Nigeria and we many houses depend on the power generator. Sorry about the electricity issue and hopefully you can find an alternative until things return to normal.

Solar should do....

The bar to entry here is to be able to use solar you need: An inverter, a Battery and of course Solar panels!

The average person just cannot afford this!

Here in Nigeria we are used to not having electricity supply and not to talk of poor. Just hope your government fixes it

I do not think there is much chance of our government fixing anything really...

Living in South Africa with these power outages can be a truly heartbreaking and uncomfortable experience. Dealing with the constant disruptions and uncertainty can take a toll on one's well-being and make it challenging to carry out daily tasks.

A bad situation yet to (probably) get worse. I'm glad I'm not there, but feel for those who are. It's amazing how quickly your country has declined whilst in the hands of the wrong people.

Indeed 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Even more people are deciding on leaving the country now.

Indeed. I've thought about it. But where would I go?

Especially when problems seem to follow you to other countries or already there...

Yep, that's the thing...the world is all going to shit so maybe it's best staying put and working around the issues with alternative power options, gensets and all.

Indeed. A person should not make a habit of running...
