Absolutely Disgusting! Stage 6 Load Shedding in South Africa!

avatar

This is the image I wake up to on my phone because there is no power in my house.

Right now as I am writing this (around 7:20am), my laptop is at 50% battery power while my mobile phone is at 28% battery power. This is all I have until...

... until 10:30am! Then the power comes on for 3.5 hours and goes off for ANOTHER 4 hours, then on again for 3.5 hours and then off again!

This affects me greatly.

My real life job has been quite crazy the last few days and I was hoping that today I would be able to catch up and blog a bit and do some good writing.

But not with THIS sort of power support.

It is not just blogging and internet facilities that gets affected by all this.

This also determines when we can cook raw food.
This also determines when we can use the washing machine for our clothes and we are a family of 5!
At night, this also puts the lighting out so it limits the number of rooms we can utilize with our lighting.

South African homes usually have a lot of backup lights but of course after successive months, the batteries do not last.

Well... I am going to see if I can do a few more things before my battery runs out.

Thanks for reading my rant!

Cheers!

This is quite sad, but thankfully you even know when the light comes on and off. The power holding company in Nigeria do as they please. When you get to see light, just be thankful. I’d advise you get a solar panel with batteries. It helps a lot.

I would if I could.

Besides the batteries you need an inverter.

I don't have money to buy those!

Yeah. This is really one big problem and irritating all of us. We need to make a plan

Now I know why South Africans all have braais set up in the garden😀

Sounds like it's time to go totally off-grid and spend the money you're not giving the power company on your own ways of generating power. Hook a dynamo and battery pack up to an exercise bike and make the kids take turns pedalling to power the laptop....

Is this some kind of emergency or why is the power support cut currently?

South Africa has a consistent power problem that has been years in the making. People at the top are mismanaging funds and getting fat bonuses every year but the infrastructure and generating capacity of the country is not keeping up with the demand or the population growth.

This is really bad. In Germany we are struggling with high energy cost currently, because of the swith to renewables and loss of cheap gas from russia, but at least we have reliable energy.

Wish you all the best.

This weekend has been a shocker and we have 2 generators so we are still fortunate. We will be off the grid in the new year which is not what I had planned but we have no choice,

Are you going off grid with petrol? Quite an expense!

No. That would be too costly. I have researched solar and have people who know people to bring the costs down. I can go totally off for around R150K and that is nearly 40% more power than required. Need the excess to cover the over cast days so there will be a few extra storage batteries.

Indeed! Well, if you have your own property and you have the money it would be logical to get off that ineffective grid!

Family of 5 is hard enough the way it is! I can relate to you on this one. Luckily, we have a decent enough, although expensive as hell, infrastructure in the US to keep the lights on in our little rural town. Hang in there man.

Thanks man. At least the Province that I stay in has less load shedding than the rest of the country. As long as we can keep the Western Cape in the hands of the DA, then the load shedding will be eliminated here.
