Firefighters... they are heroes! Why?


Firefighters run towards the direction of danger. When disaster strikes, firefighters are one of the first officials to reach the scene.


When there are fires and explosions, most people flee and run in the opposite direction.


Even in medical emergencies, firefighters are responding to the call.


Firefighters are courageous knowing that there’s a chance that things might not go their way. Yet, they push through and do it anyway. General Norman Schwarzkopf once said, “True courage is being afraid, and going ahead and doing your job anyhow, that’s what courage is.”

To show my support for our neighborhood Volunteer Fire Department Firefighters, I joined our hometown heroes for a pancake breakfast fundraiser. The cost of the breakfast was a small $5.00 donation towards the cost of the pancakes, sausage and eggs. All children were free. Of course, you can give more towards to breakfast!


A bit of history...

The origins of organized fire protection in Woodland can be traced to a series of fires in the late 1860s, which focused the attention of the community on the dangers of the "fiery element". A group of interested citizens joined together to create "some kind of Fire Department".

Their efforts resulted in the formation of the Woodland Hook and Ladder Company in August of 1870. Members of this group pulled their ladder wagon to fires and used buckets to apply water to the fire. This method was frequently ineffective in stopping the spread of flames, but the ladders allowed Ladder Company members to assist in removing contents from the homes before they were destroyed.

Citizens soon decided that they needed a fire engine to assist their efforts so the City ordered a new steam fire engine. In May of 1875, the Woodland Fire Department was re-organized to include the Hook and Ladder Company and the newly formed Engine and Hose Company, both to serve under one Chief. In April of 1876, the new steamer arrived along with a hose cart and 500 feet of hose. With the addition of this equipment, the City had achieved a level of protection that would remain essentially unchanged until the 1920's.


Since its inception almost 150 years ago, the Woodland Fire Department has continued to grow and evolve into an organization that is responsive.

I know this to be true. In both the personal emergencies I went through in the past, the firefighters were first ones to come to my house. THANK YOU, Firefighters!

We all need to support these brave men and women that put their life on the line for us in times of emergency!
My oldest son is on the fire department at the oil refinery that he works, and although we worry for his safety, this work is so critically needed!😇

I to have the utmost respect for firefighters, and interesting to read the history of the Woodland department

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

We have a fairly small Fire Department. But, they are always there when you need them. They also come to our block party every year!

Is it a funded or volunteer fire department either way it’s great what they do without a doubt

There are only a few funded employees, like the Fire Chief. The employees you see here, most are volunteers.
It's a great group of individuals!

No, they don’t here in my part of Spain where I live at the moment. But in other countries I have lived, they did.

So once in a while, when they need support, I try to support them.
the other time, they were collecting donations... using their boots as containers.

My local Firefighters are always reliable often getting to an emergency situation first before an ambulance, they even supplement the Emergency ward hospital staff at times of staff shortages or the unit becomes overwhelmed. 🚒

They are just very nice people and helpful too.
I am grateful to them for coming for me!!!

Speaking of which, my neighbor called 911 last night and got the fire department and fire EMT ... just like that, they are there!

There wasn't time for that here, but we always bake for tgem on the specialbholidays! It's good to let those that provide for us know how we appreciate them!

Firefighters are people who truly step up in times of trouble, many more duties have been added to the list in what they attend to, a lovely post to honour them in thanks and gratitude.

Being friend of a fire fighter you come to realize they are under extreme stress dealing with fires and trauma.

Vehicle accidents more often than not, fires have become more frequent in homes and outdoors.

Really are a fraternity who support communities, not given recognition deserved.
