[ENG-SPN] The charm of a village in Aragon / El encanto de un pueblo de Aragón

Located at the top of one of the most emblematic villages of the Cinco Villas de Aragón, whose inhabitants still remember with a certain amusing nostalgia the passage of film directors, such as Luis García Berlanga, there is only one solitary tower left standing, which bears witness, with its resilient perseverance, to the place where that medieval fortress stood proudly, erected next to the imposing Romanesque church of San Esteban.

A fortress, which, in addition to protecting the inhabitants, including also that Jewish community that became strong in the narrow and dark streets of the Jewish quarter, offered security to the constant flow of pilgrims, who, coming from neighbouring Navarre, left behind the Sierra de Leire and the city of Sangüesa, to continue their journey, staying in those same inns that today continue to carry out their centuries-old work, converted into comfortable hostels.

Castles, lands and also routes, from which the troops of King Sancho VII the Strong set out to meet up with the Castilian troops in the outskirts of Toledo and to be the protagonists of one of the most important Christian victories of the Reconquista, that of Las Navas de Tolosa, whose remains continue to be contemplated, with nostalgic parsimony, as the poet Verlaine would say, by the roofs of a very charming town, Sos del Rey Católico, which, despite looking to the future, has never renounced its rich medieval heritage.

Situado en lo más alto de uno de los pueblos más emblemáticos de las Cinco Villas de Aragón, cuyos habitantes todavía recuerdan con cierta divertida nostalgia el paso de directores de cine, como Luis García Berlanga, apenas queda en pie una solitaria torre, que testimonia, con su resiliente perseverancia, el lugar donde se alzaba orgullosa aquella fortaleza medieval, levantada junto a la imponente iglesia románica de San Esteban.

Una fortaleza, que, además de proteger a los habitantes, incluida también esa comunidad hebrea que se hizo fuerte en las estrechas y tenebrosas callejuelas de la Judería, ofrecía seguridad al constante flujo de peregrinos, que, procedentes de la vecina Navarra, dejaban atrás la Sierra de Leire y la ciudad de Sangüesa, para continuar su camino, alojándose en esas mismas hospederías que actualmente, continúan ejerciendo su labor de siglos, reconvertidas en confortables hostales.

Castillos, tierras y también rutas, de las que partieron, además, las huestes del rey Sancho VII el Fuerte para reunirse con las tropas castellanas en los alrededores de Toledo y protagonizar una de las más relevantes victorias cristianas de la Reconquista, la de las Navas de Tolosa y cuyos restos continúan contemplando, con nostálgica parsimonia, como diría el poeta Verlaine, los tejados de un pueblo con mucho encanto, Sos del Rey Católico, que, a pesar de mirar al futuro, no ha renegado nunca de su rico patrimonio medieval.
