A short road trip over the mountain.

A Happy Friday to all and come take a ride with us.
188.jpg

One has to stop for the pedestrians in this area and that lady was worried that I would drive over this fancy chicken in the road.

The saddest thing to see for us is what they call a "road kill" and I once picked a young Jackal Buzzard up after it was banged by a car. The youngster died in my hands. So Yes, Marian has me stopping for even beetles that are cossing the road hahaha.
We tripped over the mountain yesterday and I got a few photos to show here.

He had a royal step in his stride and took his time to regally make his way.
He is a Pea Fowl (Eavo cristatus)
189.jpg

Great manners too, as he turned to thank me.
192.jpg

We were in farming country out in the crisp mountain air.
153.jpg

Our first hot day after the winter and the Pied Crow (Corus albus) sat open mouthed in the sun.
483.jpg

High up a Jackal Buzzard (Buteo rufofuscus) was cruising the thermals.
183.jpg

A family of Egyptian geese (Alopochen aegyptiaca) also crossed the road in the air.
114.jpg

This little Southern Fiscal (Lanius collaris) came to see what we were doing in the car.
147.jpg

Always lovely sights whenever we take these trips and now in Spring season the birds are plentiful. Soon we will take another trip as I want to go and search for the famous African Fish Eagle in the mountains.
We have heard his call a few times now coming from the same direction and I think a nesting site is waiting for me to find it.
Life is an adventure over here.

And That's All Friends!

Refreshing to see bird life out in Spring, males all dressed to attract females on their best behaviour!

Just saw you post and new life all over Lady Joan.
Yes, for the males it is certainly party time.

Oh, yes and they are now called Pea Fowls my friend. Someone must have objected to the second part of the original name.

Greetings and thank you Lady Robin. Thank you also for the recent kind donation.
I think that the authorities should place a pedestrian crossing on the road as it could also serve as a bird crossing hahaha.

Some years ago we had a 7 day break in the mountains and Marian fed all comers as usual.
One Peacock male took a special liking to her and declared Marian as his fiance.
marian_and_peafowl.jpg

It broke his heart when we left and I had to tell him that Marian is my wife and it's against the law for her to have two husbands 🤣
I think that he understood.

Wow, that is soooo awesome! But if I were you, I would watch that guy.😁

Hahaha, thank you Lady Robin and yes, time has taught me to keep an eye on him.
At times the males are in the high spots in the cliffs where they stand guard and that loud bark warning from the top is always chilling to hear.

So when they are down below, they are even more unpredictable.

Oh and thank you also kindly for the donation.

Stopping for beetles?!!! That must make a trip around the block a day event! We have one of the oldest family farms here that looks like they breed those peacocks. And don't believe they can't fly. I've seen them launch themselves, complete with magnificent tail 4 or 5 metres straight up into the tallest trees. Happy weekend @papilloncharity

Oh yeah, they can indeed fly and I have posted them before sitting on a double story house's roof.
It was a first time also for me to see an albino peacock. Pure white all over.

Happy weekend, or what's now left of it also to you guys.

Nice trip Zac, and nice birds. The peacockfowl is beautiful, but I like the crow photo most 😃

I don't stop the car for beetles, but I try not to step on them nor on ants, and if I accidentally step on one I apologize at once, although the insect might not be able to hear me anymore 🤣

Good evening Hannes,

That crow photo also impressed me out of the three shots that I took of him.

So now you go around apologizing to dead ants. Shhh! Somebody might read this and think that we are mental cases 🤣

I have to walk around on eggs here at home at night, as we have many snails here and it makes a crunching sound when I accidentally step on one. Marian wants to kill me if she hears that sound, but even worse, then I have to sleep alone that night 🤣
Just because of a snail that didn't watch where he was going.
You know what I will say here 😉

Cheers and thanks.

Good evening Zac,

oh yes, if I notice it then I always apologize, even if it's too late.

Yep, such is life, my friend, but you must know that the snails wanted to avoid you, but were too slow 🤣

!PIZZA and !BEER - sounds like a nice dinner :)

Hi Hannes,

We both have peace in the fact that we didn't mean it methinks.

But the thing that worries me is that there is a thing called Karma and one day something big can tramp on us, unintentionally of course 🤣

Cheers and thanks.

Hi Zac,
of course Karma could come and we will be the ants. I hope that it at least apologizes then 🤣

What a sight, aren't they? My brother has 4 peacocks (he still calls them that and the female peahen) Must we be so e PC about everything? They have had that name forever, haven't they? I didn't know they flew until I saw them up above the two-story garage on a tree limb. They would actually sleep up there if my brother didn't put them in their house at night. Perhaps they felt safer? It was actually the most ridiculous sight I have ever seen. :) He also had an albino and as rare an event as that is, the colorful ones are much prettier to me.

The chicken crossing the road is rather regal, isn't he?

Oh yes, a real royal one that fancy chicken with his colore tail the entourage that follows him hahaha.
Yes, peacocks can fly and I have also seen them in high places. Clumsy flyers though, but still, they can fly. Especially when they sense danger.
We have the latest bird identification book and it's amazing how many bird species had their names changed. But the local names still sticks to them.

Blessings.
You are right that the colored ones look better, but it was just so strange to see an albino.

Now I am curious and a little dismayed. We aren't going to recognize our own birds' names pretty soon. They have removed statues, signs, renamed streets, all in the name of being PC, but, honestly, you cannot change history, you can make the present never repeat it by remembering it.

If they rewrite history, maybe it will be forgotten. :(

The bad news is that they have issued new curriculums to schools with rewritten history.
You are right about the statue removals and the renamed streets my friend.
It is as if we are now strangers in our country of birth.

We don't know what the future holds in store for us.
