Tales of the Urban Explorer: The Cottage on the Hill
I have heard of isolated but “The Cottage on the Hill” takes the biscuit.
There would be no way on earth to find this seriously buried gem without a reference and I have to thank @grindle once again for the share.
Unless you count a concrete factory around half a mile as your neighbour, then silence is all you are going to get in this extremely isolated rural welsh part of the world.
We had to walk from the factory as the road was so narrow and were grateful the weather didn’t suck that day.
The hill continued upwards, the only sign of anything other than long annoying weeds were slight colours of indistinguishable shapes.
We passed an old van; I can say for sure that plate is not legal but it took away the guesswork as to who manufactured it.
Another red van was opened up, rear-facing us, and held a few goodies. Why a Betamax recorder is discarded outside is anyone's guess.
Just look at that.. it must have been someone's pride and joy once. Sony produced quality stuff in the early 1980s; it would have cost a small fortune.
Google reveals nothing about the 'Hanimex Cadmatic 720', but I see the company went bust in 2004.
They used to produce photography equipment and I vaguely remember the brand.
We traipsed around the grounds looking for further evidence of human existence and spotted a shed that was extremely hard to get to.
The weeds were intense and the inside disappointing, unless rusty drawers are your thing.
Dumping all these contents of the discarded weed killer and plant enhancers onto the over-growing green shit all around us crossed my mind, but I knew it wouldn't instantly kill it and make access to the cottage easier.
Speaking of which.. where was that damn cottage?
I had a vague idea of the direction and after fighting through nettles, brambles, weeds as tall as myself and thistles I spotted something through the dense jungle.
Was it a wall?
More hacking down weeds told me it was the main course, but a little more work would be required to get any closer.
The front door looked to be wide open, a bonus!
Home-sweet-home; what happened to the carpet? I can understand the wallpaper peeling a little but the floor must have been supremely cold, especially with bare feet.
The ex-owner had contacts in the Far East, or was he a traveler?
I made the assumption it was an old hermit, who wore those trousers and very colourful flowery ties reminiscent of the 1980s'.
A couple of cassette tapes and a lover of Garfield. It all smelt very 1980s.
Why not decorate your shelves with empty wine bottles. That's not a full moon shining through the window, ahem…
The windows had almost survived. These isolated places are great, with no stupid thugs to be seen anywhere wrecking them.
Only BBC channels on this particular TV, and with room to expand. It would be a lot later when anything other than BBC1 and BBC2 arrived.
An Introduction to what.. it's Opera.. enough said, I am not a fan. Is there some welsh written on that tape?
The door looked strangely new and out of place. Had someone thought about sealing the place tight and stopped at the first door?
I was hoping the kitchen would be similarly decorated as well as the lounge but was disappointed.
BOK BOK is clothing for girls? That doesn’t quite fit the stereotype I am building.
This is much more interesting. David Reimers (who can’t be found on Google), is not happy with UK bog paper and indicated he may like to import it from South Africa?

The only method of getting to the back of "The Cottage on the Hill" was to walk through it and exit via the back door.
I could see the building was not exactly in great shape. It’s a little on the wonky side.
Who was David Reimers and what has become of him? I figure he was an old granddad type. Who else wears dated jackets such as these?
The name is not very popular but other than some Australian dude who kept popping up there appears to be no record of that name in Wales, United Kingdom.
It’s another mystery house…

I once went Geo Caching in a remote part of the Western Cape and the journey led me to caves only accessible at low tide to eventually ending up at a gravestone in a cemetery that this dude's kids had made to honour their father. It was epic.

Hidden cottage sure tried hard to keep you out with itchy tall weeds sprouting everywhere.
At least the guy had style for the 80's, good sound equipment, excellent hide away with excellent choice in toilet paper! (Facsimile dated 1992 Juising International perhaps in good use after fruit on offer too....)
Nice hideout, no name is common most probably movers and groover who hit the road from who knows where!
Now don't make this sound way back when...., it only looks that way!

Perhaps you missed the outhouse, bed may be rolling a mat on the floor close the heater for warmth. Hobbit and hermits are not set in their ways, are they?
If there was one, we would not have found it. The jungle there was incredibly dense.
Perhaps the weeds grew stronger and taller because of all the shit out there! 😂

Its a big black menacing thing. I will go for ghost, it satisfies my inner horror fan!
Wow, looks like it was quite the adventure just getting to this place. I am glad that you were able to gain access and do a good bit of exploring. It is also nice that no one has really damaged the place too much. That trail at the beginning is my kind of explore!
It was a tough approach but these are the problems of exploring in July. It's this or freezing and pissing down in Winter (but more accessible). I haven't seen this knocking around on Facebook either, not that I take much notice.
I still think you need to start carrying around a machete to cut through some of that rough stuff. Beats getting your legs and arms ripped up from the thorns.
Ah.. the machete. Instant arrest here for carrying deadly weapons. I wouldn't know were to acquire one. They are not for sale in shops.

Where they used to sleep is puzzling. No upstairs or signs of a bed. Perhaps that lovely comfortable stone floor?

Way back in 92 Mr Reimers was having some serious rectal pain with the English toilet paper that he was going to import it all the way from SA. That’s some commitment to wiping your ass if I’ve ever seen one! Lol looks like a pretty damn cool exploration. Wonder how long it was between him using those vehicles and them getting abandoned there.
The rest of the evidence looks very 80's and that TV.., maybe early 70's. I suspect the Betamax was dragged from the house by idiots, and was high-tech once. He could have got a decent telly to go with it!
A couple of decades before I was born, a 1kmX1km plot of land in my village was expropriated and re-zoned as a conservation area. Within that area, there was a woollen mill and about 20-30 cottages.
The house I grew up in, fortunately, backed on to that conservation area.
Looking at these photos reminds me of being a 8+ year old and roaming around the "cons" exploring the abandoned cottages and the mill. (The mill burned down, so only stone walls left).
Yes, I can remember being drawn to these places when I was young. Perhaps it's in the blood?
Seeing as I was a geek by nature. When I was 14 or 15, I took a remote controlled plane servo and connected it to a battery powered lamp. And set it in one of the cottages that I knew would be in view later.
That night there was going to be a bush party.
I attended the party, and at the right moment, I slowly brightened and dimmed the lamp a number of times. (using the model plane controller) Making sure to point out that "I don't think there's supposed to be any power in that cottage, how can there be a light?"
Later that evening, I snuck over and got the lamp and my servo back without being noticed.
The stories of that cottage being "haunted" have only blossomed over the years. The structure is completely gone now though. I'm not sure whether some kids tore it down or whether the authorities did.
Is it really Urbex when it's that far out in the countryside? But seriously, that looks like a neat explore regardless. A shame about the Betamax player left to the elements.
Oh yeah. If it's man-made, and abandoned.. it's fair game. Less dickheads in the countryside too!

Looks like it must have been empty for years, but must be isolated enough to not attract many visitors. Nice time capsule, if an odd mixture.
My family's first VCR was a Sony Betamax. I remember taping Live Aid on it and years later I used it to turn my Amiga monitor into a TV. It's long gone now.
Live Aid.. that's '85? About the time I acquired my Ferguson Videostar. They are antiques now. I'm sure mine had fallen of the back of a lorry, it came from a dubious source.
There were several competing standards back then. Some didn't get far. We were mostly just taping stuff for ourselves, so format didn't matter as long as we could get tapes. Still got a VHS deck in the loft.
Brother, this blog of yours has been amazing. We don't always understand how to take care of old things. In fact, the first thing was new one day. The pictures you have taken show how old these houses are.

I think you're a really brave person to come and explore this place, seeing everything broken and messed up, it just looks creepy. Like the haunted house movies I've seen. But the furniture and curtains seem to be very new, not too old.
Only the door was newish, the rest was filled with old cobwebs!
Oh. I see that the curtains are also new. so I think it hasn't been long since they left.
It would’ve been too creepy for me to go inside the place. Djinns may dwell in such houses. It’s also a good sign that no witchcraft was done in that house nor satanic rituals. The place looks abandoned for months even by spiders XD, no cobwebs…

Another emotional read for me @slobberchops haha again...the dereliction and the scattered memories , they really hit you at the base level.
I So remember top loading vhs and I also remember that Betamax (the small video tape before VHS) was also superior in picture quality and was a better product but was 'pushed out' by VHS as the format. Another time in our world where 'might' and 'connection' won over quality ah well, such is the cruel world even in video tape production or in lovely old cottages left to rot, eh?
Thanks for this @slobberchops I know you said opera is not for you, but when I saw that little opera case I thought, wouldn't it be magical to carry up an old phonograph (I know how would you but it's my fantasy so I'd find a way haha) and play old Caruso records in that cottage...I'd picture some happy ghosts then.
