Tales of the Urban Explorer: Granddad's House

Deep in the heart of wildest Wales, a region of the British Isles so untouched that the locals roam naked, orgies are rampant and transsexual nymphs tempt naive bloke visitors into anal sex lies the fabled ‘Granddads House’.

Do you think I could re-skill into writing best-selling Children’s stories? I am considering it.

42_IMG_8514_42.jpg

Let’s start again.., ahem. On the corner of a main road intersection shrouded in trees, and invisible to the unknowing passer-by lies ‘Granddads House

This one looks fucking epic mate”, a bubbly @anidiotexplores was telling me as we approached our pin and knowing little else.

41_IMG_8512_41.jpg

I wish they were all like this, and I don’t mean the content. After jumping a ditch and scrambling up a slightly muddy bank we found ourselves as shrouded and out of sight as the house itself.

“Shhhh”, I pointed to @anidiotexplores using arm motions. “Nosey neighbours next door”, I whispered.. seeing how close civilisation was.

53_IMG_8525_53.jpg

You would not know it looking at these images, and it could well be deep in some forest.

Like many Time-Capsules, ‘Granddads House’, named after its former inhabitant by the general community was not in the least photogenic from the outside.

34_IMG_8505_34.jpg

There were countless entry points, some via windows but why bother when the back door is wide open?

Entering through the kitchen I bypassed it and went straight for the living room.

1_IMG_8469_1.jpg

Look at that piano. @anidiotexplores pressed a key and a single C Major resonated loudly. “Cut it out man, the nosey twats next door will call the cops”, I scolded.

2_IMG_8470_2.jpg

Looking around I didn't know where to look first. This was one epic explore and if anything there was too much to take in.

3_IMG_8471_3.jpg

The reel-to-reel tape deck at a guess is from the 1960s, even before my time.

4_IMG_8472_4.jpg

That looks like a ropey place to hang your jacket. It obscures the mirror behind it.

5_IMG_8473_5.jpg

So we are not the first explorers to visit, they had not made too much of a mess.

6_IMG_8474_6.jpg

1956 newspapers, this was getting better.

7_IMG_8475_7.jpg

8_IMG_8476_8.jpg

Not content with a single piano, Granddad had another one.

9_IMG_8477_9.jpg

A royalist, and likes his spirits while pushing out some tunes.

10_IMG_8478_10.jpg

It all looks a little classical. Coffee stains, burns, or rat bites on the sheet?

11_IMG_8479_11.jpg

Just about every door was open, even the cupboards had been rifled through.

12_IMG_8480_12.jpg

This must have been the conservatory, located at the front and not the back of the house.

At this point, I had to pixalise some of the images. Can't have this great location burnt down, can we?

As the former proprietor has a rather unusual surname and could be tracked down by unscrupulous arsonists, I decided to omit his name. Let’s just use Granddad.

13_IMG_8481_13_censored.jpg

This bill from 1961 to repair his organ (no.. not that organ you dirty-minded bastards!), was quite sizable at over £19. That was a princely sum then.

14_IMG_8482_14.jpg

That's a very comfortable bedroom for a prospective desperate homeless person. It's a good thing he wasn't in bed when we arrived.

15_IMG_8483_15.jpg

“The Listener”, appears to be one of those intellectual journals. For a minute I was confusing it with "The Watchtower", the one made by those Jehovah's Witness freaks.

16_IMG_8484_16.jpg

Some more markings by other explorers; what is it with all this marking your territory bullshit?

17_IMG_8485_17.jpg

They don’t make irons like that anymore,

18_IMG_8486_18.jpg

Granddad had a sweet tooth. The Pound Shop has oodles of this teeth rotting stuff extremely cheap.

19_IMG_8487_19.jpg

Is ‘Harlech’ a place, or some welsh expression?

20_IMG_8488_20.jpg

You just know that wardrobe is going to be crammed with clothes, and mothballs.

21_IMG_8489_21.jpg

One of the final designs of CRT TVs before they were destined to end up in the local tip.

22_IMG_8490_22.jpg

Granddad liked to keep old yellowing newspapers hanging about.

23_IMG_8492_23.jpg

Mozart, so it’s purely classical stuff he likes.

24_IMG_8493_24.jpg

25_IMG_8494_25.jpg

26_IMG_8495_26.jpg

I get the feeling Granddad lived alone, despite the double bed. Not keeping on top of the dishes is a very man flaw.

27_IMG_8496_27.jpg

28_IMG_8497_28.jpg

What's going on here then? Did someone have an accident and try to cover it up.

29_IMG_8499_29_censored.jpg

2002, and the most recent paperwork I could find. Why the fuck would you buy premium bonds? That is so last generation.

30_IMG_8501_30.jpg

Here’s some evidence that Granddad did at least a little cleaning.

31_IMG_8502_31.jpg

.. and wasn't one of those smelly hermits who stank out the local bus with BO.

32_IMG_8503_32.jpg

We could have explored the loft, but why bother when there is so much eye candy?

33_IMG_8504_33.jpg

The perishable goods don’t appear to be that old. How long has Granddad been gone I wonder?

35_IMG_8506_35_censored.jpg

1961, and an invitation to parents and friends; it was addressed to Granddad. Was he a parent?

36_IMG_8507_36.jpg

38_IMG_8509_38.jpg

We exited the house and entered the Amazon jungle for a few externals. None of them were very satisfying.

39_IMG_8510_39.jpg

40_IMG_8511_40.jpg

Both chairs and boats turn up in the most unexpected places.

IMG_8524.JPG

At the back of the property was a shed and caravan with the door wide open.

43_IMG_8515_43.jpg

Both were full of all types of rubbish, and knick-knacks.

44_IMG_8516_44.jpg

3d would have been preferable to 3p.

45_IMG_8517_45.jpg

Oh shit, did I speak too soon about Jehovah's Witnesses?

46_IMG_8518_46.jpg

That does look suspiciously like a kid's bike unless Granddad used to ride it down the street.

47_IMG_8519_47.jpg

Why are caravans always crammed to the hilt with junk? Surely they should be a place to relax. Sitting atop all this crap would be decidedly uncomfortable.

48_IMG_8520_48.jpg

They are not even open. I didn't have the heart to desecrate one of them.

49_IMG_8521_49.jpg

Was he a hoarder? The house wasn’t too bad. It could be the caravan was the resident ‘junk room’.

50_IMG_8522_50.jpg

No date of this musical magazine but as it’s pre-decimal I know it’s older than 1970.

51_IMG_8523_51.jpg

The writings of the deceased or I presume so. It’s strange to look upon such things. It’s all musical material. What a place, and the Wales trip was not yet finished.

37_IMG_8508_37.jpg

The Brass House’ was lingering in our sights, but not before a very angry bloke would come marching out of his mansion yelling at us.

This was a premium adventure. I love that you had the privacy of the old tenants in mind all the time... Going through their stuff but not giving away private information😀. Please can I tag along next time you think of going into another Grandad's House?

It's more to stop other's finding it and wrecking it. On HIVE, there are next to zero real explorers, but out there.., there are many who won't respect the contents and will damage, steal or burn them.

Please can I tag along next time you think of going into another Grandad's House?

Ha, do you live in Wales? Perhaps.

Unfortunately Nigeria😩... I would use you as a muse to discover my own adventure. The pictures were also crisp clear, did you use a professional camera?

Many ask me about the camera. It's just an iPhone 7, not even new.

Funnily enough, a girl I work with still buys Premium Bonds and she is only touching 40. I thought it was a last generation thing but she swears it is a profitable venture.

pressed a key and a single C Major resonated loudly

Lol, this offends my musician sensibilities. Fancy having more than one piano eh!

My parents had some, I should ask my mother about them and what happened to em.

Too right, it would have been a full D Minor Chord if I would have placed my fingers down there. Make it bleak, just like the surroundings!

They are a very strange thing. I think my parents had some. Funk knows what happened to them.

Everything should be in minor! :0D

Wow, that is pretty awesome. Lots of great stuff to see on that one! I can't imagine how excited you must have been.

It was one hell of a day, The Brass House is coming up.., just as good as this.

That's a real time-capsule with some pre-decimal content. Rees-Mogg would feel at home even though he's younger than me. Two pianos shows Granddad was a dedicated musician. Nice finds.

Both pianos were knackered, and had plenty of wonky keys. I didn't need to try them, it was visual. If Granddads would have been remote enough, I would have taken a seat and played Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata... or the bits I could remember. Might have freaked out @anidiotexplores hehe...

Pianos won't do well if it's damp in there. Guy up the road restores them, but he says not many people want proper pianos these days.

I did learn to play a bit, but my right hand is buggered now, so can't do big stretches.

I remember those big stretches when doing some pieces. Wish I could remember how to play.. you forget.

I hold some Premium Bonds!

Your beard went a little greyer while typing that comment. As juicy as they come, you can't beat Wales for these.

Linda and Joe McCauley have been buying Premium Bonds since 1963 but are now considering cashing in their entire £27,500 investment.

In those five decades the couple have won at least £25 in most of the prize draws and sometimes £50 or even £500.

Think of the daily SPS they are missing out on!

I'm holding out for the million, but it's usually £25.

One needs some relatively liquid fiat funds after all!

The lined toilet seat!!!😂😂😂
As if someone was worried about catching anything while sitting on the loo!

Jackpot finds in the shed and caravan.
Just needs a little TLC to turn it into a charming getaway!

As loo's go, this one wasn't bad, you should see some of the ones I feast my eyes on! I heard it's due for demolition, and all the trees have been stripped back.

Two pianos!?! Balla.
The wicker chairs actually look like they could be re-purposed if they had new cushions. How do you find so many abandoned homes/buildings?

Wow! Jackpot at Grandpa's house! This was certainly unexpected by me. Transexual nymphs. Oh, the pictures my mind is conjuring up. Yikes!

Looks like a cottage in the woods and I love when the overgrowth takes over and becomes part of the landscape. I actually disagree with your statement that it didn't look in the least photogenic from the outside... You certainly photographed it in a way that made it look more than interesting, even with an artistic slant. I loved it at first sight. I like the helping stool? Piece of wood? Whatever boosted them into that window, only to find the door wide open! :))

It makes me wonder why anyone would leave not one but two pianos there when they could have been sold or even donated to a rest home, or school. Someplace that could make good use of them. Oh! That reel to reel! I remember my grandfather thought his battered reel to reel was a prize! I couldn't only think how cumbersome something like that was. Those other explorers like leaving their little stickers so the police can round them up for trespassing? Rules of the Road: Leave no evidence behind. There is so much to take in here! Almost like a time capsule without the container, isn't it? The newspapers kept, Grandpa was a packrat! Thank Goodness some people were! My grandmother and then my mother after here would keep those Danish butter cookie tins and put sewing notions in them. Sheet music! I love old sheet music, ewwww! Rat bites. Oh, Ewwww!Although, the conservatory looked to be in good condition, as was the furniture, of a newer style I would say.

I was hoping you would give me a peek inside the wardrobe. I bought a few nice ones when I lived over there, I still love them. Did you look in there? Obviously, not a cleaner, was he? Premium bonds? In 2002? I wonder if Grandpa had a grandchild that he was responsible for? The bike, the school papers...Perhaps a girl, looking at those fancy beribboned envelopes. Oh! Pre-decimal? Legendary. I have to say that this was a pretty awesome find! From beginning to end, I could do it again... easily. Thank you!

I didn't look in the wardrobe, who knows what could have jumped out and molested me, this is Wales!

Trespass is not criminal here, so the cops wont do anything, besides yawn loudly.

One day I will find a proper piano that works and is out of earshot. I miss playing, loved it in the 90's. I came across another today (was out again exploring), but the keys were mostly stuck. I couldn't get a full chord out of it.. bummer.

Haha! That is true! It is Wales! :))

I actually didn't know that it wasn't criminal there. Seriously. Good for you, not having to worry about more than a yawn. You play the piano? Oh, sweet Jesus! That is like a chick magnet. Good thing you are married.Any guy that can go to a party (especially Christmas) and plunk out a tune... I hope you find one and that you record it. You have no cajones if you don't. That would make a $500 post. :)

I was never very good and learned by ear and not the correct way. I still have an old Roland keyboard in the house, not one of those shitty ones, a gigging one. No space to set it up now.. and its slightly faulty. One day..

Today! One day never comes, you know that as well as I do. :)

My great grandfather played by ear and when my great grandmother passed, he moved into senior housing as he didn't want to live with us (we had nine kids) LOL I remember that he used to go down to the atrium and play and all the old ladies were like magnets on him. OMG... I think they actually swooned. LOL

@bingbabe may not approve. Leave it in the garage.
