Wardrobe Malfunction

Not the nip slip kind but an actual wardrobe that doesn’t work for me.

We have one build in wardrobe that in theory has lots of space but in reality doesn’t function. It feels like a deep dark hole where clothes go to die.

”I have nothing to wear!”

When I can’t see my clothes, I think I have none. That’s why I end up wearing the same stuff that is always just piled up on that desicnated chair of half used clothing.

I don’t think clothes like being in a closet at all actually, they just get wrinkled and start smelling stale very easily because they can’t breathe.

I finally got fed up with my wardrobe situation and came up with a plan to resolve it, at least partly. I send the man to the hardware store to get supplies and build me store-like clothing rails that hang from the ceiling. We have 3 metre high rooms so there is plenty of space up top and it’s about damn time to start using it.

After a few hiccups on the way, we got the rails hung up and I got to start playing with them. I need to Konmari my whole wardrobe and throw away clothes that I don’t like, are too worn and don’t fit well, but now I have more space to display the clothes I actually like. When I get everything done I can easily rotate stuff in and out according to season.

What I’m still looking to add for this space is an antique display cabinet where I’ll put my heels in, a huge mirror, a persian rug, velvet stool and a big chandelier. That’ll set me back some 5000€ at least so I think it’ll be a while. A girl can dream!

It's a great solution and looks pretty funky too. Well done to you and that fella! It's also a good idea to do a cull now and then, although it can be hard I guess, especially if things still fit and look good.

I did a massive cull as I was running out of wardrobe space a while back. Got rid of everything except one shirt, pair of jeans, one pair of socks and boxers and one pair of shoes. I have loads of wardrobe space now, but on laundry day when things are in the washing machine it makes things a little awkward when I go out. It seems walking around in Australia with nothing but a pair of sneakers on is frowned upon. 😁

I will keep everything that actually ”sparks joy”, but what I find hardest is having to keep functional yet not that great clothes. Like multible thin long sleeves tops that are a little warm and alone look ugly but you need those to wear under wool sweaters in the winter. And then there are the ”I don’t care what happens to them” clothes that are good for work and painting.

I’m surprised, if there is any place accepting of public nudity, I would have guessed it’s Australia.

Yep, we all have required clothes, stuff we need to keep for whatever reason. I've got a few items I don't care about, like for working in the garden, cleaning guns and all. Also, a few items I just can't get rid of. I have a draft post about one such item I'll post it when I decide to. Someday.

Actually, I was joking...everyone gets around naked here. 😊

What an awesome transformation! Your guy did so well, under your expert supervision of course. :)

I went through my wardrobe last weekend, I only ended up with a small bag of things to take to the second hand store. I need to have another try as I'm running out of room too.

Haha yes I’m great at supervising 😝

I’m a little too good at throwing things away, I can easily fill a huge bag full of clothes. But that means I haven’t made great buying decitions and that sucks.

That's a really good point, about the buying decisions. I actually get a lot of my things at second hand places, so much of it still has tags on or appears to be completely new. I got a leather jacket last year for $13, tags and all, and have worn it a lot. It makes sense to me suppose, I don't see the point in spending huge amount on clothing. I have some nice things, new dresses and things, but am just as happy in something second hand.

I don’t think price or second hand vs new determines the value of a piece. Sure I like new expensive stuff but quality and how much it suits for me and my lifestyle is always what determines the value to me. I absolutely love finding some incredible well loved pieces at bargain prices. And to me it’s worth it to buy lots of clothes because I love them!

I agree completely, just like money doesn't determine the quality or value of a person.
