About Death, Memory, and A Tree of Life

Hello, guys!

This is my first post to the Monomad community since the beginning of the war. Initially, the main focus was on physical survival. Then on mental. Now, for the first time in 9 months, I feel like I can share something different. Yes, it took me a long time. But I missed you! That's why and I here to share with you not just photos but the story!

Backstory

This place is special to me. I saw this installation for the first time by accident and under unforgettable circumstances. My husband and I went for a walk and decided to take an unknown route just to see the area where we had never been before.

Saturday, late evening, autumn, fog. The streets are almost empty. Here is the gate, it's opened. And behind it is a mysterious and deserted alley, illuminated by the weak light of lanterns, covered with fallen leaves, and the end of it is hidden in the fog...

The scenery was as if it was made special for a horror movie. Just a year ago, I liked horror movies, and cemeteries also seemed to me interesting and beautiful in their own way. But not anymore.

Anyway. We entered the gate and walked along the alley. We were talking to each other, and suddenly I got a strange and a bit creepy feeling. Some other voices appeared in the noise of the street outside the gate, our steps and the sounds of our voices. Silent and unclear, closer and further. At first I thought that there must be some people walking behind us and talking. But there was no one behind. And ahead as well. As we walked, here and there some voices sounded, they said something as if there were people around us. But there was no one. Can you imagine my feelings?

We didn't immediately realize that the voices were coming from loudspeakers mounted on lanterns. Then we finally heard what they were saying. These were names, surnames and ages of people. Sometimes children. Sometimes babies. They were pronounced by male and female voices. The names were mostly Jewish, besides, on one side of the alley there were grave monuments with inscriptions in Hebrew. We understood everything.

The alley is called the "Road of Sorrow". In 1941, more than 30,000 Jews went to be shot along this route. There are 32 speakers along it, and visitors walk through a sound corridor of children's and adult voices calling out the names of the victims. All speakers sound simultaneous, creating the sound effect of a crowd.

Babyn Yar is a ravine in Kyiv. Here in 1941, in just two days, the Nazis shot nearly 34,000 Jews. On the eve in the city announcements were posted with an order for all Jews to come to the cemetery on September 29 - supposedly for evacuation. Whole families went carrying documents, clothes and valuables with them. The smallest victim in the tract was less than a month old. On September 29, 22,000 people were shot in the ravine. On September 30 - another 12 thousand.

The Mirror Field

The next part of the memorial a forty-meter mirror disk with high mirror metal columns. It has columns symbolizing the mythological "Tree of Life". The columns and the circle itself have many holes. They are traces of real bullets of the same caliber with which the people of Kyiv were shot. At night, the holes glow, so that due to the lack of other light sources, they create an effect of a starry sky.

But back then, in darkness and fog, it has blown my mind.

Just 2 years after the opening of the memorial, modern Russian fascists fired rockets at this place. Four of them fell here nearby. They aimed at the TV tower, but it survived, as did the place.

On the sides of the entrance to the installation there are two stones, and three more - in the form of human figures - are installed around the "Mirror Field". They have metal plates with what looks like a peephole and keys. Screens are hidden there, which broadcast the memories of surviving witnesses, people's stories and historical information about the project.

Since then, I sometimes walk here. It looks different in different seasons, and every time this place makes me feel something.

Then, for the first time, I felt pain and horror for past events. Sometimes I feel hope... And now the past is very closely intertwined with our present. In many cities, terrible pictures of crimes committed against Ukrainians by people who until recently called themselves our brothers are revealed. I don't know if any monuments or installations will ever be erected there, but we will do our best to ensure that no propaganda in the future will allow our descendants to forget what is happening now.

Crap, I tried to keep it positive.😚 And short.😜 Well, but it's still positive, because even now, we struggle and hold on. Day by day, large and small cities are liberated from rushists by our AF. Every day brings me closer to victory, to a new peaceful life where I won't be afraid to take my camera out of my bag, and where photography will once again bring me joy.

Until then, my life is here and now. No time like the present.

🖤

Hugs!

There is beauty in everything, even in death and the photos captured some of the essence of that.

Wow that is such a moving installation. Wow. To hear the names of so many people. Wow. To think about what happened there. Thanks for sharing. I really like the photos in the snow and black and white.

I would have felt pain and horror too. It's terrible to think of the whole thing, let alone listen to those witnesses. You took some very cool shots, too bad it symbolizes what it does. Stay safe my dear friend! ❤️ Thinking of you every day!

That is such an eerie walk but a very poignant memorial to those who were killed. I think these memorials are essential so people know and remember the atrocities from the past. Need to send your neighbours here so they can see the blood on their hands

Agree with you, stories of our past are essential. You know, before the war my daughter believed that history is boring, actually she was not interested in history at all, and the history of Ukraine in particular. And now she eagerly studies it, and probably knows more than me )

Need to send your neighbours here so they can see the blood on their hands

They are blind and deaf

Snowy-covered Ukraine, I badly miss those days wearing a fur coat and boots... I know your feeling so can't say anything. But remember I am always here for you dear...

Some great photos there, although very sad. Monochrome certainly suits them. Take care.

Wow, sister.

Your soul shines through here in full. What a beautiful post, eloquently written and incredibly well photographed! 👀

You're an artist! Take more pictures. Please!

I came to find you to let you know I tried to make a dance video (two weeks ago already! 😬) especially for you to use as practice :) But some folks walked into frame mid dance and then my battery died. Tech problems...

I'm busy trying to edit it into something that is more coherent.

Glad I came to visit for this one. Out it goes into the mainstream of social media things. 👍

Fakebook been gifted with this as well. This is why I keep coming back to visit you.

Aww, dance video especially for me!! 😍😍😍 I look forward to seeing it when ready! Take your time and don't worry about tech problems. Here I have tech problems every day so it's normal ))

Thank you for sharing my post, and for your words... You know, I feel much better now, compared to my post on Oct 18th, I remember it upset you much. And I use the breathing technique you advice, it's simple, and seems it works. I took a treatment course for my back and now I'm slowly back to exercising (I became lazy already). But in general, I think that I merely needed some time to re-accept my life after my trip to HiveFest. It was amazing but too contrasting.😆

Thank you so much, dear, for everything ❤️

I see you shining.

Oh. I wasn't upset at your post. It takes a lot to upset me.

I was worried that people may not support the content as much because anger scares people off (their own trauma)

And I knew immediately that you were offering amazing content that the world needs to hear more of.

I did this, by the way. When I was doing some activism against government corruption. It upset me so much that my writing voice, when I tried to share it, scared people off.

I was super angry. Rightfully so and, of course, we must feel that or become depressed.

But I wrote when I was super angry and that writing voice pushed readers away.

What I was trying to say was not to write when you're triggered. Because it triggers other people's stuff and they won't engage with the content

Because I didn't want your content to possibly be ignored and go unvalidated while you were already being traumatized.

This would have doubled the trauma and it's impact on you

I do hope this makes more sense. 😊

It wasn't a criticism. It was concern for your safety and health 💗

I wasn't angry, by the way. When I ranted at government. I was f*cking scared.

It was the "fight" reaction ;)

Not good to write when I was triggered. So I learned to process it and then come back and write in a voice that didn't also scare people.

Because when I didn't process it, wrote when I was angry and was further ignored I moved into the "freeze" reaction and began to suffer with "depression" as a result. I think this may make sense to you ❤️`

So my chosen response, after some learning, was to process the anger effectively and to then take constructive action (because of the anger) to share more of what government are doing (taking action to try and incite change to avoid the freeze reaction).

Here is your playlist until I can get the tech right. It goes like this:

  1. Warm up. Stretching, breathing and connecting with each part of your body to come into the present

  2. Bit of fun to get you moving around (even if you don't feel like it / especially if you don't feel like it!)

  3. Using a song to connect to and dance out the feelings associated with the situation (weep, shout, breathe... let it all out)

  4. Taking back some power and having some fun and light with it

  5. Inspiration to keep on keeping on, beautiful woman. You've got this!

(Unsupported https://open.spotify.com/embed/playlist/5j996nNmbkswt5eoxDUwJA?utm_source=generator)

I'll get the video up as soon as I'm able to and, hopefully, one day we can dance through all of this sh!t together.

In the meantime... never stop the dance! 💥
