Night photography test / Zkouška nočního focení

I've had a digital SLR for probably decades. Not the same one all the time, of course. I even had a film SLR for a while. But despite that, I can't say I'm any kind of extra photographer. Rather the opposite. I take quite a few photos, but I enjoy taking pictures and I'm still discovering the unsuspected possibilities of the digital SLR.
Until recently, I used the camera to make animations with my son. Last year I tried to take pictures of fire and the year before that I took pictures of water.

This year I tried one of the most difficult disciplines in terms of photography. And that is night photography. In my case it was shooting the night sky. I was on vacation in a small village near the mountains and it offers such a photo shoot because there is little light smog. Already last year and the year before I was looking for a clear sky without the moon. It was only this year that I had almost perfect conditions. So I could start experimenting. I had never done it before and had no knowledge. I just tried it as it came to me.

It was clear to me that I had to keep the aperture as open as possible. I used a Tamron 10-24 wide-angle lens with a minimum aperture of 3.5. It's not really suited for this kind of shooting, it would need a better aperture. But whatever.
The question for me was what next, what time and ISO. I haven't shot like this before so I was rather experimenting. I started with ISO 640 and added time. I didn't want to overdo it so the images wouldn't be too grainy. The image above is 30 seconds. The image below is already 100 seconds.

It still wasn't right. So I gradually increased the ISO. It doesn't seem like it, but at longer times the stars start to appear as dashes instead of dots. However, I realized this rather late and tuned the shutter speed quite a bit.
Subsequent photos are a bit better. But it's still missing something.

Another issue that surprised me was the humidity. The lens glass started to get dewy, so I had to get a cloth and wipe the lens before each photo.

I used to take pictures just around the cottage. Testing. Surely it would take a better location for such a shoot. Since I spent a lot of time testing, I figured I'd save some of the shooting for the next day, when they promised the same weather and conditions. Unfortunately, they only promised.

The next day there were clouds. And they weren't at ten in the evening, but it was still a little light. So I tried again at midnight.
So I took some pictures again. This time ready. ISO at 5000 or even 6400 with shutter speeds of about 10 seconds. By then the stars finally looked like dots. But everything was spoiled by the nearby street lamp, which was out at that time the previous day.
Overall, I think the experiment was a success and gave me valuable insights for future photography.
