I was so nervous the first time I entered an airplane

It is totally normal for everyone to feel nervous sometimes. Getting really anxious or worked up about stuff is just part of being human. I remember very clearly how nervous I felt the first time I ever rode in an airplane. It is a moment I would never forget in my life because of how uneasy and anxious I felt.

This happened to me back then when I was in school and we had a big class trip planned. We were going to fly on a plane to another city for our school excursion ( Lagos to Abuja ) . I had never been on an airplane before, so I did not really know what to expect. The thought of flying made me feel very stressed and apprehensive,I almost cry.

Leading up to the trip, I could barely sleep at night. My mind raced thinking about all the things that could go wrong on the plane. Even though air travel is very safe, I pictured emergency landings, the crazy turbulence, and other disasters. My imagination ran wild with everything that could make the flight uncomfortable or scary for me .

The very morning we left for the airport, my stomach was in knots. I was feeling very queasy because I was so jittery about getting on the plane. At the airport, going through security just heightened my nerves even more. And waiting at the gate for boarding made me super fidgety and anxious, seriously I was in a mood I can not really explain.

It was already time to walk down the ramp and step onto the plane, and seriously I could feel my heart racing. Finding my seat and getting settled in was really stressful. Even though the plane looked normal, it felt very weird knowing I would soon be zooming through the air in this metal tube.

Once we were all buckled in and the plane started moving, I broke out in a cold sweat. My hands were seriously shaking with nervous energy. As we accelerated down the runway, I gripped my seat terrified. The moment the wheels left the ground, my stomach dropped. I was overwhelmed with anxiety and I couldn't control it at that moment .

Being airborne in the plane was such a foreign sensation. The world looked tiny out the window. Every noise and bit of turbulence put me on high alert. I spent most of the flight feeling tense and panicked. It was the opposite of relaxing I must say!

Once we were airborne, the teacher noticed me clutching my seat looking terrified. She could tell I was extremely anxious about my first flight. The teacher tried to soothe me by explaining all the noises were normal and turbulence felt worse than it was. Her calm demeanor helped me relax a bit as the flight went on.

Some of my classmates teased me about getting so worked up. A few even made jittery motions to poke fun at my nerves. But one friend sitting next to me sympathized since she had also been scared on her first flight. She let me squeeze her hand during take-off which made me feel better and very calm a bit .

Midway through the flight, the flight attendants came by with refreshments. Having a cold soda and cookies distracted me from focusing on the plane noises and motion. It was nice to think about something normal like eating a snack, instead of obsessing over the flying.

I tried striking up conversation with the other students and teachers to get my mind off the anxiety. Hearing funny travel stories and discussing plans for our trip got me engaged. Focusing on what we would do at our destination rather than the journey itself helped calm me.

By the end of the flight, I felt accomplished that I had tried my best to manage my nerves. The plane landed smoothly and we all cheered. I could not believe I had just flown through the air like a bird! Though still shaky, my first flight was a success.

After getting over that initial hurdle, flying became easier each time. Now I quite enjoy plane trips and the quick access to new places they allow. But I will never forget that first flight and how anxious I felt taking the leap into air travel at last. It was one of life is formative moments.

Of course the flight went smoothly and we landed safely. But it took me a long time to calm down after getting off the plane. The whole experience was nerve-wracking because it was so new to me.Going back to Lagos I feel completely comfortable on planes. But that first flight stands out for how incredibly nervous I felt!

Thank you for reading my post.

Your first flight was frightening, but fortunately everything went fine. Everyone experiences flying a bit differently, but it's not uncommon to be afraid, and you really captured what it is like to feel anxious and fly for the first time.

We have some tips for you. In creative nonfiction stories, we are looking for characters and dialogue, just like in fictional stories. It would have been really interesting for you to name some of the other classmates, and to write the things they said (to the best of your memory, of course), and go into more detail. While your experience is interesting, it would add depth to your story to provide more detail about what was happening around you, who was there, and what you said to one another.

Also, we ask everyone who publishes in The Ink Well to read and comment on the work of at least two other community members for each story posted. Thank you!

It's normal to feel nervous when trying something new, especially when it involves flying. But I am happy that you managed your nerves and enjoyed the flight. It's also nice that you had have supportive friends and teachers to help calm you down.
