I was forced to learn sewing skill but now I am glad I learnt it
When I was a teenager, my father suggested I take sewing lessons to learn how to make and alter clothing. At the time, I didn't take his advice seriously since fashion design didn't interest me. But years later, those skills he encouraged me to nurture now provide a valuable source of extra income. Looking back, I'm grateful he gently pushed me to build creative abilities that greatly benefit me today.
As a restless 14-year old more into sports and books than arts or crafts, sewing seemed like the most boring activity ever when Dad first brought it up. I tried to politely decline, but he insisted just basic lessons would be practical to build handiness and unlock hidden talents. Though skeptical, I grudgingly went along to humor him, expecting to confirm I lacked any fashion design inclination.
Yet to my surprise, as I slowly learned to operate a sewing machine, read patterns, and stitch fabric, I discovered the process uniquely relaxing. I enjoyed losing myself in precision work, finding satisfaction in creating clothing from scratch. My first childish attempts gradually gave way to wearable pieces as technique improved. Seeing my visions take tangible form built confidence.
Dad let me give up after one year when it was clear couture greatness wasn't my calling. But the core skills stuck with me as creative outlets during stressful college years. Customizing thrift store finds gave self-expression and productivity in free time. I also developed wisdom around mending, adjustments, and alterations that saved money over constantly buying new clothes.
Eventually, I started a small side business hemming, tailoring, and repairing garments for extra income. My father's foresight in nudging me to build a practical skill provided income and fulfillment where I least expected. Pursuing supposed hobbies with an open mind can yield unforeseen dividends.
Today, while I work full-time in education, I still carve out evenings and weekends to sew custom creations for boutiques and private clients. Each unique outfit combines my mature technical aptitude with youthful playfulness. Reviving damaged treasured garments also brings immense satisfaction.
I often reflect on how easily I could have refused to build this ability that now deeply enriches life. I'm grateful my dad gently pressed me to expand horizons and try creating with fabric and thread. 20 years later, I still enjoy losing myself in sewing's rhythms and seeing completed pieces. Nurturing hidden talents takes patience but can unlock lasting purpose - life's wisest lessons often reveal themselves slowly, one stitch at a time.

I’m seeing a lot of people saying their parents forced them to learn a skill.
Your dad is truly the best for letting for “forcing you”.
