Before we start to explain what Zcash is, it's important to understand why privacy is so important.

Unfortunately, most people still don't appreciate the importance of privacy, thinking that everything is trustworthy and safe, including applications like Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and others. However, these companies are controlled by technocratic organizations and governments, which extract information from users.

Well, you are used to using Uber to get around, right? Or Waze to guide yourself to a place you don't know how to get to? When you open one of these apps, they ask you to allow location tracking, making it easy to see where you're going or what you're doing.

Every step you take is being recorded in a huge database with the CIA, NSA, or any company controlled by nefarious governments, according to NSA whistle-blower Edward Snowden. And this is just a simple example of the surveillance we encounter every day.

When you're talking on the phone to someone, you have no idea if your calls are being recorded. Your mobile is always transmitting personal information about you, even when it's not in use, without your consent. Your conversations on WhatsApp, Instagram, etc. are also being watched and recorded, as well as the records of purchases you make online or in shops. In a few words: you're not safe.

Zcash is a Bitcoin fork that has its own blockchain and cryptocurrency, completely focused on privacy, freedom, and security. This means that the proof-of-concept is the same as Bitcoin's - Proof of Work.

The first Zcash blockchain currency units were launched on October 28, 2016, being the first cryptocurrency to implement the Zero-Knowledge Proof protocol.

For those who don't know, ZKP guarantees the privacy of transactions. Zcash currency payments are encrypted and then published on a public blockchain, with the sender, recipient, and transfer amount details being completely confidential, making any tracking or surveillance impossible.

Zcash is important for freedom because the government or anyone else can't see or track what you're doing on the blockchain. You are free to buy, send messages, and do whatever you want without the worry of being watched. You can make everything shielded, and if you want transparency, there's an option for that too.

In addition to state-of-the-art encryption and privacy preservation, Zcash has unique features that set it apart from other projects.

Zcash supports fast block processing times (75 seconds), low rates (default 0.0001 ZEC), and a 2mb block size, which is a perfect balance for scalability, node syncing, and fast processing. With regular update schedules, this protocol is adaptable to meet the diverse use cases of today, as well as the unforeseen use cases of tomorrow. This promotes innovation and prevents ossification.

Zcash is also self-funded with strong community governance that aligns with key stakeholders' incentives. Zcash's governance structure is inclusive and resilient. With the Canopy update, a new community development fund is secured from 2020 to 2024. With the Major Grants fund, at least $20 million is earmarked for the future development of Zcash, decentralizing the ecosystem even further.
