WARHAMMER 40k Lore + Surprise! The inconsistency of Warp Travel!
I have been speaking a lot about the Warp, Daemons and the Chaos Gods. However, to be able to travel through the Warp means faster than light travel for the Imperium of Man.
It is the whole reason the Emperor is a gian beacon for everyone else to navigate themselves to.
There are two other aspects to this travel:
Geller field shields - This is the device that keeps the immaterium out of the vessel. Daemons attack this field and if they manage to break it, they will be aboard the ship. Usually, Daemons have no shape in the Warp. They gain their shape as they enter the real world, but they do the same thing when boarded by a vessel from realspace.
The Navigators - The Imperium hates the mutant... and yet their ships are piloted through the Warp by mysterious sanctioned mutants called Navigators. These Navigators have a 3rd eye and the ability to see through the Warp and then use that Emperor beacon. They are also nobles and have space on Holy Terra that is each of the Navigator Houses' territory.
The problem with Warp travel - Besides being breached and murdered by Daemons, is that there is a chance that you might not end up getting to your destination or getting there in time.
Usually Warp travel is fast. But sometimes ships arrive far too late in the target area. Sometimes they are blown off course by the vagaries of the Warp or Warp Storms and then the ships come out somewhere very far away from their intended target.
Sometimes, and this is rare... the ship arrives in the PAST, before the ship knew it needed to be somewhere. Despite the confusion, some see this at the Emperor's will that they arrive somewhere BEFORE they left their point of origin.
My Lost in the Warp Marines
More than 8 years ago I borrowed a friend 10x Space Marines so he can use them as allies in his T'au army. They were basically unpainted or were part of other people's armies and I had them spare.
This weekend he travelled over half the country and came to visit me, but they came with him! So I have ANOTHER 10 Space Marines in my collection... that I will repaint some day.... promise haha!
Thank you for reading my post!

@zakludick
The storytelling potential of ships being blown off course in space or in time is honestly limitless. I love 40K so much.
Indeed. They have only ever just scratched the surface of what is out there. I do love the setting!

Whenever you get around to painting those marines, even if they end up just split up and merged into other formations, each man should get some kind of insignia to show he's a time traveller 😁
🤣🤣🤣 Brilliant! I should mark that under their bases!
