Maledictus Terra Book 2: Sanguifex Part 69
Introduction
Welcome back to Maledicturs Terra. This is a Chain Story between myself and @lex-zaiya, meaning that we each write the parts alternatively.

Part 69
There was a sickly snapping noise of bone grinding against bone. The scream that followed ground anguish into his soul and his mind fell back to a time in the past that seemed for away when he too, experienced such levels of agony.
There had been a presence in his mind back then... it had gnawed at his self-control. It wanted to consume him, make him do things that was not his choice. To mold him into a weapon to use against others of its kind and others that were like it.
Adrian snapped out of his reverie. Anna lay panting with her back against the battlements. The broken arm looked like it was whole again but she did not dare move it and used her other arm exclusively as though it was extremely tender and painful.
Adrian shook his head. Anna had taken a hearty dose of pain suppressants. For the arm to be this painful. Though he was grateful that the Blazeknight had managed to restore the arm, he also felt a twinge of disdain for magic that was this... ineffective. It was sort of illogical.
"How long will it take you to be able to travel?" He asked her quietly.
Anna grimaced at the question. Magna, who had been staring into the forest from the battlements whipped her head around. "You mean the healing spell didn't work?"
"It worked." Leopold said defiantly. "She managed to heal the broken bone."
"So what's the problem?"
"She's in immense pain sister." Adrian answered the question before Anna or Leopold could say anything. "Tell me, where does your magic ability come from? Where do you believe it resides?"
Leopold snorted. "We are Blaze Knights. It is holy magic, powered by out faith!"
Adrian raised an eyebrow. "Does the magic come from your God?"
Anna and Leopold nodded.
"Was your God not a corrupt being after all? You only discovered this late. Yet you were using this magic and magic like it to do good and this worked yes? I would think..."
Leopold did not let Adrian finish. "Our true God and that... thing... that stalked the streets and fought in the battle. That was not our God! Whatever that cult of Red Priests in your City were worshipping, it is not the just God of righteous fire that we Blaze Knights serve!"
"And you do not think that the good of your magic comes from yourselves?" Adrian asked patiently.
Anna shook her head. "When I was a little girl, I had no magical ability. There was... nothing special about me. My mother and father were devout. There were Knights and Clerics with immense powers that stemmed from our Lord and Savior. After I joined the Blaze Knights as an initiate, my faith brought forward my ability to heal."
"Hmmm..." Adrian doubted that was the extent of it. He was still learning his own magical abilities, but this was fascinating the consider."
"I think this whole conversation can wait." Derrick interjected. He was in human form. He stood closer to the group. "Though the sunlight is driving these things off, if we do not find ourselves a place that is safe from those creatures by the next nightfall, then we will all be in serious trouble. I have seen some of them skulking underneath the treeline. They seem to be standing watch to track us so they can call the greater number in when the opportunity is right."
"They are tracking us?" Magna asked, looking back at the treeline. "I can't see anything."
"Trust me. They are there. Usually, it is I that hunt prey, but right now we are the ones that are being hunted." Derrick sighed. "I would harass their scouts myself, but we need a plan. That means a destination."
"I agree," Adrian said. "I shall try to contact Trix and get them to come back out." He sat cross-legged and bowed his head. He had his link bracelet in his hands and focussed his thoughts to emulate a beckoning."
There was feedback of emotions and thoughts through the bracelet but Adrian could not make sense of them right away. He tried to focus his concentration better to cut through all the babble when the light grew darker above him.
"Your message was easily received. No need to shout." Trix said standing over him, her arms folded before her body. Behind her stood the King of Clarpratia, who seemed calm as he looked from person to person on the battlements.
Mortis was also there and he stalked up to the twins immediately to look them over briefly. He then went to stalk along the battlements.
Adrian turned his attention to King Sebastian. "We have daylight coming up, keeping these things at bay, but I do not think facing them here again would be wise. We need a place to go to that would be difficult for them to follow us and easier to defend."
"Really? Why?" The King asked.
"Because we are being hunted." Mortis said from the battlements. "We are being watched."
