HIVE GUIDE for the Saffas - Converting HBD to ZAR - Hive Based Dollars you earn on Hive into RANDS in your bank account!

avatar

Good day everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa! This post is a GUIDE to explain how to put some of your blogging money into your wallet in South Africa!

This post is actually way overdue and I planned on doing it ages ago but then started a hellish 8 week project at work! Haha!

Right, so let's get right into it - You should initially be focussing in building up as much HP as possible for a new account, especially those that are Redfish. But it becomes necessary to draw some fund for your efforts on Hive!

I certainly want to empower you to be able to do this should it be necessary.

When you post on Hive, the default setting on your REWARD is 50% HP and 50% HBD. As I have explained in onther Guide posts, HBD is Hive Based Dollar and is usually worth more or less a US Dollar.

You can then Exchange it for Rands into your South African Bank Account in the following way. (NB: There is more than one way to do this, this is what I am using!)

Important Note This process might seem long-winded and laborious, but just like Hive has an initial learning curve, this is actually easy one you know how and takes me less than 2mins to do the transfer and then a little while later I request the withdrawl... you shall see below!

The Method.

Right... You have some HBD

You see your HBD is in your wallet. You can hit the little arrow and see the transfer option. Cool. (FYI, I am using the Ecency front-end in this example but will work just as well from one of the others.)

Now you need to use a website called: http://hive-engine.com/

This can be signed in with your Active Key or Hive Keychain, should you have this set up.

Go to Wallet, find the Deposit button and hit that. For the Token type type "HBD" and select it.

You will then find the Transfer details to use the Transfer HBD section on Ecency to send HBD to your Hive Engine. Use the @graphene-swap account to send it to and then your your memo. My memo is "SWAP.HBD zakludick" and your will be the same but with your username instead of "zakludick".

So back on Ecency, at Transfer...

You enter the appropriate details as explained above and shown below. The username and the Memo.

Go back to Hive Engine and soon enough - there is your HBD!

Now... you cannot send HBD to an South African Exchange so it is necessary for us to conver it to another more mainstream crypto that is supported by our local exchanges.

We COULD go trade the SWAP.HBD for SWAP.HIVE and this can be used to buy just about anything on Hive, like POB (Proof of Brain) tokens or Splinterlands Packs on the secondary market.

But we are going to skip that step and use something easier...

There is a SWAP function on Hive engine. Use this instead...

Select HBD as your first token and LTC - Litecoin as your destination.

There is an amount of "slippage" on the swap so when you process this, pay attention the the value in Dollars for the first token vs the token you get in return. There will always be a slight "loss", see this as transfer fees.

Sometimes on larger amounts the slippage seems to be too much and I process the swaps in small amounts instead.

The Swap will go in a que... this takes minutes.

You will see that it is a Success.

In Hive Engine you will see the SWAP.LTC is in your wallet. Any token on Hive Engine is a "SWAP" something.

Now you need a South African crypto Exchange, so I will use Luno. It is free to register and you will need to verify your account if you want to be able to process larger amounts of money through the account. Initially there is a cap I think of R15,000 once off... more than enough to start. I have a level 3, there is no limit then.

On the Luno interface there is a button in your Wallet to press to Recieve crypto. You will go to LTC (Litecoin).

This will give you an address to send the LTC to. You can only recieve on this address and only LTC.

Back on Hive Engine, on your wallet, you press the Withdraw tokens... type in LTC and select it.

On the next section you can say how much LTC to withdraw and to what address. As you might have guessed, this is the address from Luno to send it to.

On Luno, it will take a little while to reflect. The entire process up till now actually takes less than 2 minutes if you have done it before. The wait until the LTC is in your Luno account varies, but the mobile app tells me that the LTC is in.

Then you simple sell the LTC for Rands ZAR, without bothering to trade.

Once there is ZAR in your account, you can link a Bank card and simple request a withdrawl.

You will get this message.

And see the requested amount as a Pending amount.

And finally, the proof is in the pudding: Money in your bank account!

Taking your BLOGGING efforts and turning it into REAL money.

Enjoy!

Cheers!
@zakludick

An excellent guide - thank you ! 😁

My own view is that with HBD currently paying 20% APY interest, it's worth trying to keep it in savings as long as possible. If you do want to pull HBD down, convert HIVE to HBD when the HIVE price is high (to get best value for money). Also, try to only pull down the difference between the 20% and your local inflation rate, that way you keep your capital intact and earning.

Indeed! Personally, I want to put as much HBD into savings as possible.

But someone did ask me to make a guide hehe.

My only money currently I regularly pull out is my Warhammer fund.

Generally, I’m particularly stupid. However, due to the guide I managed to withdraw R14. LoL, what a fortune. Hehe

I've remained purposefully ignorant 🤣it was supposed to help me save. It did not. It's just as well I know how to do this myself now. Lol.

This is a great guide you have done for your fellow citizens -- and, should I ever come to South Africa and need to convert some Hive, I know how now! Thank you!
