GARDENING - First March Update - There is a slight coldness in the morning.
Good day everyone! Happy Saturday.
Here is my little gardening update as the season starts to turn to a South African Autumn. Besides being in South Africa, I live in the Western Cape, which is a coastal area separated from the interior by a mountain range that lifts into a plateau. (I go over elementary geography enough with the kids to be reminded of this all the time hahahaha!)
So, in the above photo you can see my basil is doing great, bell pepper is still growing nicely amongst them and the rosemary. Parsley is still living but just chilling out not growing much, no idea why. The watermelon plant is doing well!
And there is the Purslane farm beyond!
Here is my little cover over the bald patch on my lawn. The cats were digging it up and so were the kids! This prevented them from doing more damage and then got some grass seeds of the shady kind because this is under the tree cover.
And it worked! Look at all the bits of grass coming up! Since it is a SHADY type of grass, The shade net will continue to protect them while they get stronger!
Meanwhile it seems that ALL the spekboom (elephan tree) cuttings I made to make my chutney have survived and are all going to become their own little plants! Awesome!
See the little pink stalks. That is all NEW growth as well as new leaves growing out.
Then there is this sheltered section to protect the newly germinated tomato seedlings. Wrong time of year? Maybe. I need to try them though before they are no longer viable!
For the record, they still live! I might experiment with covering them and seeing how they respond to that!
More spekboom growth!
Thank you for reading! I am going out now with the kids! After giving my garden a nice bit of water. I do need to neaten up the beds though and feed the plants... That will be tomorrow's work!
Cheers!

It looks great when there is lots of growth! Loving the vibe!
Herb garden looking good, spekboom I tend to plant straight into the ground with no need to move them they tend to grow quite well in the humid conditions we encounter.

Looking good !
Something you could investigate to see if it'll grow in your soil is chard, especially Swiss chard. It's a bit like spinach, with good iron and vitamin content. Planted in autumn, it will grow slowly and steadily through winter at a time when everything else is dormant and unproductive, allowing you to harvest a leaf or two off each plant every couple of weeks. But it'll need protection if you've got slugs and snails, they love it !
I shall look into doing chard! It is definitely available here!
Plantation.. Good for the atmosphere.
Indeed it is! Going to keep planting!
