A Walk in the Gardens of the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño
Have you ever visited the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño? This is the oldest Catholic Church in Cebu Province which was built in the 1735 and completed in 1740. This is one of the major tourist spots if you get a city tour.
Aside from being home to the oldest catholic relic in the Philippines - The Image of Sto Niño and the regular outdoor mass held within the Basilica. Did you know that there is a mini garden inside the old church?
The walls are a mixed of Muslim, Romanesque and neo-classical features. It was said that the stones used to build the Basilica were sourced from Capiz and Panay, brought on big bancas (boats) while the Molave wood used were from the mountains of Talisay and Pitalo.
There is also a mini pond in the garden with medium size fishes. You can also see coins thrown in the water. I wonder what kind of wishes the people who threw the coins had and whose wishes were granted.
Did you know that the Augustinian Friars where the first Christian Missionaries to settle in the Philippines.
Here is the Translation of the notes written on the Marker :
The Religious Order of the Augustinians in the Philippines
In the place called Tandaya, now part of Samar arrived the first Augustinian Priest, All five of them were led by Padre Andres De Urdaneta.
On February 13, 1565, the Provincia Del Santissimo Nombre de Jesus de Filipinas was established which strengthen the Augustinian Order in Rome.
On March 7, 1575, The Teachings of Christianity were spread over Luzon, Visayas, China and Japan.
The Augustinian Priest and Friars established towns and municipalities in the Philippines, They had shared their knowledge in Science, Language, Culture, and History. They pioneered the construction of some of the oldest churches in the country. Four of these Baroque Style Churches were recognized by UNESCO.
Although the Augustinian Priest were affected during the time of War and Philippine Revolution, some of them still stayed in the Philippines to managed schools and towns.
The Province of Sto. Nino de Cebu was one of the places that was founded by the Filipino Augustinians separate from the Augustinians of Spain, 1983.
Hope you liked the place. Where do you often go if you want to take your mind of something?
