A Means To An End

The phrase "Money is a means to an end" has been around long before the modern age. But it seems to have become a catchphrase now that people throw around frequently. I think understanding the phrase can put things in a better perspective and help us in utilizing it.

Being steps ahead always has its advantages but only if you understand the steps that come before. Let's explore some points and see what this phrase really means.

A Means To An End

This simply means a bridge or steeping stone to get somewhere else. All of life is a journey and we use the tools at our disposal to move from one place to another. Money is no different. Although it is a powerful tool that can poison your soul and cause massive damages it is a tool nonetheless. And tools are neutral in nature, its polarity is changed by the person that uses it, either on the positive or negative.

Money isn't necessarily a means to an end, it's oftentimes a means to another means. In most contexts, there is simply no end. You reach the mountain top only to discover a bigger one looking down at you daringly. Why are billionaires still playing the money game when they could retire?

If money is a tool, then it's important to understand that it can do more than just accomplish your goals. For example, It can also be used to accomplish the goals of other people. And this is perhaps the most powerful function of money: its ability to be 'fluid' in nature, you can do a lot with it.

As it turns out and based from personal experience, buying other people things is a rewarding activity in and of itself—the same way that giving gifts feels good for both parties involved.

Does The End Justify The Means?

Since we're talking about 'means', why not go through the full spectrum and link both the means and the end seeing it from a moral perspective.

The end justifies the means. This is a quote that many of us have heard before, whether in our high school history classes or from a character in a movie.

However, it’s more than just a saying; it's also a moral principle. The idea behind this quote is that there are no absolutes when it comes to morality; instead we must make decisions based on situations as they arise and how they affect others around us.

For example, if you're asked to steal something valuable to save someone’s life then doing so wouldn't neccesarily be immoral because stealing isn’t right or wrong on its own but rather depends on what your intentions are and why you chose to do so (i.e., saving another person's life).

When it comes to money, there is a constant battle of polarities. There are some people who think money is the root of all evil and is the cause of our suffering. And there are people who don't care about the means as long as the end is achieved. These are the by-any-means-neccessary kind of people who will do whatever it takes to 'get the bag'. To them, money is the end. Usually, the status of having money.

What Is Actually The End?

The end is the goal, the purpose, or the reason for doing something. It's what you want to achieve as a result of your actions. The end may be a tangible result or simply an improvement in your life.

We have all experienced or observed reaching a plateau after achieving a financial milestone. This is usually because the financial milestone was seen as an end so the stagnant behavior kicks in once the end is reached.

What are you trying to accomplish by getting money? What do you hope to gain from this pursuit? Why do you want it?

The end can also be a consequence of an action—the result that happens after something else has taken place. For example: If I commit myself to writing every day for one year, my end could be a completed book manuscript at the end of that period of time and perhaps graduating to a professional writer.

Final Thoughts

Money is just a tool. It's not the end, it's not the means, it simply is a means to an end and sometimes a means to another means. You can use money in the same way that you would use any other kind of tool to achieve your goals. But first you must understand the tool in order to be able to use it properly. Why is money even a powerful tool? Any thoughts or ideas?

Thought-provoking post!

The value of money is dependent on countless things and events in the world, always in flux, but most of us think it is static, and hold our view of money like blocks of concrete. Perhaps for convenience sake.

In reality, money is inflationary and our activity in the society such as employment and business earns us more of it. Much like how new Hive tokens are minted regularly.

Noticed how the value of Hive in USD terms fluctuates? Likewise value of gold, other currencies, equities, etc also fluctuate as we know. However, we can also say it is the value of USD which fluctuates depending what we perceive as most dear to us.

One BTC is always one BTC. 10000 HP is always 10000HP. Their value in USD should be immaterial once they themselves are perceived valuable and wholly owned.

The real question is what is valuable for one’s life. For some it may be the one college degree, for others it may be their house, or even their loved ones.

The earlier one attains what one desires after careful evaluation and stay contented, the earlier one can see the futility of money.

Absolutely! I think that is where many people get stucked at. They're indecisive and still don't know what they really want to achieve or do. That's one of the reasons why their perception of money stay stagnant and never evolves.

Great comment!

Beautifully written, sometimes, we can accomplish a lot simply by having Money, get connections, get favours, get recommendations and all that. No one who is wealthy will want to give that up if you ask me. that's mostly why wealthy don't stop even if it's guarantee that they might never go under for life.

Thank you :)

I think that's the main reason why it's a powerful tool. It affords one a lot of things, opening doors that would have otherwise being locked. Sometimes influencing the course of history. Money, it many instances, makes the journey of life easier.
