A few months ago I told you about a great Venezuelan musician who has excelled in both academic music and salsa, Gonzalo Grau. Right there I told you that he had a challenge, mainly on Instagram, with the hashtag #soneochallenge.
Salsa has two components that coexist in it, one is the main melody, which can have its different parts and even some kind of chorus, but the second part is the "soneo". In this part a chorus is constantly repeated and the singer must improvise his verses. For this reason, Grau took for this challenge only the chorus of the second part so that singers and musicians are directly confronted with the improvisation.
The song, an original by Tito Rodríguez, was dedicated to a timbalero who had worked with him and who was convinced that the success of Rodríguez's orchestra was due to his presence. Once he left the orchestra, Tito Rodriguez recorded this song, "El que se fue no hace falta" (The one who left is not needed) to prove to "Pat" Rodriguez (Yes, they both had the same last name), that no one is indispensable.
To reinforce this approach, the success of the song was immense and today it is still a salsa classic.
Here's my participation in that challenge!
