We have all taken a first step in various situations in life. After breaking the ice everything becomes easier, but deciding to take the risk is an important act. Today I dared to take my first step by using a zip in a craft.

A few days ago I started a project that involved inserting a zip into a piece that would allow me to open and close it to store items inside. A pencil case for pencils, erasers, colours and even a small ruler; that was the work I started and it was quite a challenge, as it was the first time I would sew a zip.

I wanted to make a special gift for my son for the new school start and I thought it would be original if I made it myself and I would save myself the expense of buying it already made. So I got creative and designed a pencil case in the shape of a pencil for his work tools. Join me and I'll show you how I did it.

First I thought about how I would do it and made sure I had everything I needed to get started.

Todos alguna vez hemos dado un primer paso ante situaciones diversas en la vida. Después de romper el hielo todo se hace más fácil, pero decidirse a tomar el riesgo es un acto importante. Hoy me atreví a dar mi primer paso utilizando un zipper en una manualidad.

Días atrás comencé un proyecto que incluía insertar un zipper en una pieza que me permitiera abrir y cerrar para guardar elementos en su interior. Una cartuchera para lápices, gomas, colores y hasta una pequeña regla; fue el trabajo que inicié y fue todo un reto, por ser la primera vez que cosería un zipper.

Quería hacer un regalo especial a mi niño por el nuevo inicio escolar y pensé que sería original si lo hacía yo misma y me ahorraría en gastos de comprarlo ya hecho. Así que me puse creativa y diseñé una cartuchera en forma de lápiz para sus instrumentos de trabajo. Acompáñame y te muestro cómo lo hice.

Primero pensé en cómo lo haría y me aseguré de tener todo lo necesario para empezar.

The idea was to recreate a pencil case in the shape of a pointed pencil and the section of this pencil would be hexagonal. And the closure would be achieved by adding a zip that logically I would have to sew. Well, now that I had everything I needed, I started to execute my project.

La idea era recrear un estuche en forma de lápiz con punta y la sección de este lápiz sería hexagonal. Y el cierre lo lograría añadiendo un zipper que lógicamente me tocaría coser. Pues bien, ya con todo lo necesario comencé a ejecutar mi proyecto.

On the cardboard I drew a hexagon that I used as a pattern to mark on the recycled jeans fabric and then I cut out leaving approximately one centimetre from the mark to the edge. This will be the back of the pencil.

Sobre la cartulina dibujé un hexágono que me sirvió como patrón para marcar en la tela de jeans reciclado y luego Recorté dejando aproximadamente un centímetro desde la marca al borde. Esta será la parte de atrás del lápiz.

I cut a piece of fabric long enough to fit the pencils and other instruments that will be stored inside, and wide enough to turn the hexagon inside out and place the zip.

With the fabric right side out, I placed the zip on the back and back stitched on one end of the fabric.

Corté un pedazo de tela con longitud suficiente para que quepan los lápices y demás instrumentos que guardará en su interior, así como el ancho suficiente para dar vuelta al hexágono y colocar el zipper.

Con la tela por el derecho, coloqué el zipper por el revés y cosí con puntada atrás en uno de los extremos de la tela.

The next step was to join the hexagon to one of the edges of the fabric and making small cuts in the areas where its outline makes a change of angle, I made a small cut with the scissors to allow me the width of the piece without folds.

Lo siguiente fue unir el hexágono a uno de los bordes de la tela y haciendo pequeño cortes en las zonas donde su trazado hace cambio de ángulo hice un pequeño piquete con la tijera para que me permitiera la amplitud de la pieza sin dobleces.

Once the hexagon seam was completed, I proceeded to sew the other part of the zip on the other end of the fabric (with the zip closed) and joined it at the front end.

Una vez completada la costura del hexágono, procedí a coser la otra parte del zipper en el otro extremo de la tela (con el zipper cerrado) y lo uní por su extremo delantero.

For what would be the tip part of my pencil pouch I cut a circle with a radius proportional to the dimensions I wanted the length of the tip. I just used a semicircle and sewed it to another semicircle in beige fabric and attached it to the edge of the pencil case.

Para lo que sería la parte de la punta de mi lápiz cartuchera corté un círculo con un radio proporcional a las dimensiones que quería el largo de la punta. Solo utilicé un semicírculo y lo cosí a otro semicírculo en tela beige y esto lo uní al borde de la cartuchera.

When it was all sewn together, I trimmed off the excess fabric, finished off the ends and turned my piece right side out.

Cuando estuvo todo cosido, recorté la tela sobrante, rematé los extremos y viré por el derecho mi pieza.

With a blue permanent marker I coloured the tip of my pencil and then drew longitudinal lines along the inflection points at the end of the hexagon.

Con un marcador permanente azul di color a la punta de mi lápiz y luego tracé líneas longitudinales por los puntos de inflexión del extremo del hexágono.

The zip worked perfectly and stayed on well, which I am very happy about. This was my first time putting a zip on, so it was an achievement I am proud of, especially because I did it with my own hands and it will be useful for my child and his school.

I encourage everyone to take on new projects and new tasks, to get out of your comfort zone and push yourself to keep developing skills and bettering yourself as a person.

El zipper funcionó perfectamente y quedó bien puesto, lo cual me alegra mucho. Esta ha sido mi primera vez poniendo un zipper, así que ha sido todo un logro del cual me siento orgullosa, sobre todo porque lo hice con mis propias manos y servirá para mi niño y su escuela.

Animo a todas las personas a lanzarse con nuevos proyectos y nuevas tareas, a salir de la zona de confort y arreiesgarse para seguir desarrollando habilidades y superándonos como personas.
