My cover of "Running up that Hill": Tribute both to Kate Bush and Stranger Things + Music Video and Making of

As some of you know the song "Running up that hill" by unusual and talented British singer-songwriter Kate Bush is back and trending. And here is my tribute and version of the song that has become a number 1 due to having been featured in the well known scifi-fantasy Netflix series "Stranger Things". This was a humble and fun project to film and record, and one exclusively for FUN.

I don't intend to improve the original which is perfect as it is but It's just a humble reinterpretation and tribute, I hope you like it. The British singer Kate Bush broke three Guinness World Records in the U.K. last month thanks to the Duffer Brothers' hit series Stranger Things featuring her 1985 song “Running Up That Hill that has been again topping the charts almost four decades later!!! :) And I'm old enough to have listened to this and the Hounds of Love in my Walkman when I was young (I'm that vintage) so it made me happy that suddenly many would discover her work.

When I first started releasing songs officially in 2002 I was compared with Kate. I had not the knowledge of her work that I have know, and though the review was not the "kindest", I now take it as a huge compliment, because she risked and tried to have her own signature and way to story tell and opened a path for female producers that didn't want to fit in. As a songwriter myself being genuine and approach your work with the uniqueness of each one of our different souls and spirits is very inspiring and has also been the moral code of my own creativity. Back in I was featured in the book "Symphony in Blue" a book that compiles over 60 female artists all over the world including many of my personal friends (Beck Sian, Emily Ovenden and many more) and how Kate's work paved the way for all of us.

The book was written by Marta Oliehoek-Samitowska. Published by Muse(ic) Books on 18 March 2013. According to the author, "The main purpose of this book is to discuss Kate’s uniqueness and her influence on the new generation of musicians together with some of the freshest and loveliest female artists around. And to celebrate female creativity in general."

For me the song has also at the moment many different personal connotations and I hope you kind of interpret the video :) but I'm running up that hill. :)

ARE YOU WATCHING STRANGER THINGS?

For me the series triggers lots of nostalgia as those were the years I grew up in. Anyway this is just but a humble tribute version (Stay tuned for the super LOFI VHS video :)) that is meant to sound different than hers but still work as a dedicatory. I hope you like it! I am generation X so I genuinely grew up in the 80s watching movies like Poltergeist, Gremlins, Goonies, The Neverending story... So I cannot help to be thrilled about all the Easter Eggs and references. When I was a child I used to play D&D and I was always treated like a geek because I belonged to a rpg club just like the kids in the series so how wouldn't I love it? I think the whole series is a collection of well intended homages :) And It is delightful when it strikes the brilliance of rescuing songs like this one. It's now everywhere but for many of us it was already there.

I find it funny that the new generations discover Kate Bush due to a music series, but I don't mind, it triggers lots of nostalgia! and I think there is an underlying and important message. Music can indeed keep you grounded and anchored to the present moment. It can be a talisman of sorts.

I really like that (no spoilers) MUSIC can save lives... It does indeed save mine I think that's a very important and comforting message.
And said this I have finally watched the finale :) (no spoilers)

For the cover I also tried to mimic those old fantasy novel covers :). I tried my best to be just the right amount of cheesy ;-)

Filming the video : Lots of fun, retrovibes and practical FX

I wanted to go for a very LOFI VHS quality video and thus it had not a pristine resolution which is intended. I filmed most of the video with my phone, both as self-recording and with a tripod. In several shots there is a structure that resembles an "eye" or portal that was done using a flashlight and making it reflect on the floor. There are also many time lapses and dramatic skies. We had a heatwave during June and unfortunately there were many wildfires in my area. This rendered very strange skies and many scenes in the video are made out of them.

I uses as it's obvious lots and lots of mirrors effects, not only because I wanted to highlight the idea of the upside down but also because sometimes I wish I could switch into an alternate reality in which I would have done things differently.

I used a simple led light for the red effect and for those scenes where there is more natural light I tried to mimic make up in 80s vibes though it's barely noticeable in the final render hahah It involved lots and lots of lilac eyeshadow :)

The dress is genuinely from the 80s, for any reason I've had it that long :) It's burgundy and dark and some modern goth dresses look similar but this one is the real thing and sadly coming undone haha :) but flattering I still fit in (wink)

The floating particles were made with flower :). I am using a similar technique on a forthcoming video to emulate ash :)

What is your interpretation of the song?

The original song's success relies in part on the cryptic lyrics. Though as far as I know it was written from the point of view of a strained relationship and the wish to understand the other partner, the words are ambiguous enough to open alternate interpretations and that's also how somehow it can become in part our own. Through the imagery of the video I wanted to convey some ideas and there's a lot of self acceptance and peacemaking with myself all along...
