Welcome back, today I am sharing about the process of traditional petroleum mining in Buket Paya village, Peudada District, Bireun Regency, Aceh, Indonesia.
Several years ago, in mid-2022, many oil reserves were discovered in Aceh, one of which was in Buket Paya village and the people in this village took oil traditionally. I came all the way from Sigli just to see this traditional oil mining process, but currently there is no longer any activity at the mining site, because I wanted to know how this mining process works, I tried asking the residents around the location. The mining location is not far from residents' houses.

According to local residents, in Buket Paya, oil drilling is carried out in the traditional way, using a unique combination of homemade equipment and strong determination. The drilling equipment consists of a three-inch iron pipe, paralon, rope, drill bits, and a collection of machines including a Dongfeng machine, water pump, chainsaw, and pulley system. Each oil well requires a minimum of 70 iron pipes, each measuring six meters long, and up to 90 pipes.

Interesting process of extracting oil from these wells. When a well produces oil, a six-ton saw-like tool, known locally as a rake, is used to lift the oil-carrying pipes out of the ground and into large drums.

The use of traditional drilling methods in Bouket Paya is not only a testament to the ingenuity of the local people but also shows their deep connection to the land.

But why do they still use this traditional technique? Firstly, it is a cost-effective solution that allows villagers to tap into oil reserves without relying on expensive machinery. Apart from that, this area also provides employment opportunities for local residents, ensuring that the benefits of oil extraction can be felt by the community.

That's it for today's traditional oil drilling exploration in Buket Paya. Don't forget to leave your thoughts and questions in the comments below. See you again in the next post, keep exploring.
