Introduction

The following piece is on Bruce Lee.

2023-06-22 03.02.58.jpg

As far back as I can remember, I wasn't supposed to witness his remarkable presence at such a tender age. My parents, concerned about the potential violence, shielded me from the world of martial arts. But fate had other plans. At the age of five, I stumbled upon a clip of Bruce Lee wielding nunchaku. His explosive energy and undeniable charisma captivated me, and in that moment, I became enamored with this enigmatic figure who transcended the screen.

He quickly evolved into more than just an idol; he became my source of profound inspiration. This fascination intensified when I met a neighbor who practiced martial arts at his very own dojo with posters of bruce lee. His parents supported his training, and his skills intrigued me even further. I started training with him because my parents did initially not want to send me to self defence practice.

Growing up, I immersed myself in the study of kung fu, exploring various styles after dabbling in karate. At the age of twelve, I ventured into different disciplines and resumed formal training at seventeen. It was during my exploration of the Chin Woo system that I recalled the school's grand master from the iconic film "Fist of Fury." Bruce Lee portrayed the student of Huo Yuanjia , a legendary figure in his own right, and the connection resonated deeply within me.

How Bruce Lee Inspired Me

Life took an unexpected turn when I endured an accident during my military recruitment schooling, leaving my right arm paralyzed due to damage to my brachial nerves. Seeking recovery and solace, I found myself at a kung fu school, where the practice of chi gong helped heal my body and spirit. It was during this phase that fate intervened once again.

One day, at a railway station, I crossed paths with a stranger. His aura hinted at a connection to the world of martial arts, and instinctively, I approached him with a question burning on my lips: "Are you a Jeet Kune Do instructor?" To my astonishment, he was indeed a Jeet Kune Do instructor, affiliated with the revered "Dog Brothers of Martial Arts" group. This encounter proved to be a pivotal moment in my journey, almost 18 years ago.

Having trained with the likes of Dan Inosanto, attending workshops led by Paul Vunak and Frank Cucci, this instructor possessed the knowledge and expertise I yearned for. I seized the opportunity to train at his school, and for the next few years, I immersed myself in the teachings of Jeet Kune Do.

The Wall

For what felt like an eternity, I found myself gazing at a wall, promising myself that one day, I would transform it into something magnificent. After returning from my sojourn in India, the time had finally come to seize that opportunity. With determination in my heart, I picked up some spray paint and embarked on a creative journey. Here's a glimpse into the process:

And behold, the result:

Conclusion

Bruce Lee was more than just a martial artist; he was a force that influenced and inspired countless individuals throughout his tragically short life. Beyond his physical prowess, he possessed the soul of a philosopher and the mind of an unconventional thinker. Bruce Lee was a trailblazer, merging Eastern and Western philosophies, and defying the confines of cultural boundaries.

As a foreigner in a new land, speaking multiple languages, Bruce Lee represented more to me than just an actor or an icon. His books adorned my shelf, his wisdom permeated my being, and his legacy shaped a significant part of who I am today. Bruce Lee, the father of MMA in my imagination, will forever hold a cherished place in my heart, reminding me that with determination and an unwavering spirit, anything is possible.

Wonderful portrait of Bruce Lee, capturing his youthful determination and inner power. I wonder if you also learned Tai Chi? What do you think about it?

@kaminchan thanks for stopping by and commenting. The guy had some outer worldly charisma, right? So I actually had a few pictures and images of bruce lee, but tried to sketch out a general but unique image that one could still recognise as bruce lee. On a journey to experiment with different ways to shade and get more comic like using spray paint, this one is the first of a few pieces.

Tried thai chi a few times and I feel it does take a while to master it's breathing. I have tried chi gong(qi gong) and learned from a shaolin monk after practicing with a European who learned it from the shaolin temple. I have met many who do qi gong, but it feels more as if their movements are controlled by muscles more than by the flow of chi. I believe that one can literally see and feel when someone mastered it and actually does it.

I like your art work of Bruce Lee a lot! I used to watch lots of old recordings and videos on Bruce Lee. I found an old book on him many years ago; that’s how I became very interested in his philosophy and life.

Chi Qong is very different from tai chi; the breathing methods were completely different. They were five main schools of tai chi, in which four schools were renditions or adaptation from the original school. These were former students of the original teacher who went out to seek their own fame later. I was lucky to have met the last disciple of the original school when she was over eighty years old and still full of energy. But I wasn’t fortunate enough to have been with her very long. Some of her old students had been with her for over twenty years; they could do calligraphy and Chinese paintings. These were very private and quiet people with professional career; I would never be able to tell that they were very advanced practitioners. I did witness real martial art ability of these people while on a summer camp. The way they used their chi to repel other people without force (Li) was stunning. I was sent backward some five meters in the air but a senior student caught me to prevent any injury. Those were the good old days of seeking for knowledge and learning. I wish I could meet traditional practitioners one day.

@kaminchan apparently bruce lee was also someone who appreciated Jiddu Krishnamurti.

From what I read, I am sure the both of us would have some interesting conversations.

Your account of the tai chi experience sounds incredible. It might sound unbelievable to most people. They'd think it's impossible to repel someone without force.

Recently, I have been thinking about the fact that martial art training has taught me a thing or two about muscle memory and since a couple of years now I have been delving into the topic of the fascia.

I'd also treat taiji and qigong as very different. Apparently qi gong is more ancient and taiji emerged sometime around the 11th, 12th century AD.

I am convinced about the positive effects on the deep tissue ECM(Extra Cellular Matrix) and to boot a healing process on a parasympathetic level through qigong. A both breath and mind coordinated movement really does have a very specific method of achievement and you are right when you say that probably only very few truly mastered it.

I got into vinyasa and I can tell that somewhere along the original lineage of astanga vinyasa must have been a teacher who had a flow that was similar to some Kalaripayattu from a time where all these practices merged from various fighting styles.

Can only fathom how strong their qi/parana must have been and their ability to extend it.

gracias por este comentario

Más que sus películas, su filosofía se encontró en el corazón de muchas personas y las inspiró. También cambió el mundo al ver todas las culturas y personas de todo el mundo como una gran familia.

@islandboi Yeahh, I remember. Fun times. That was 2008 actually, around May, June. Brotha! Best times in my life! I was lonely and didn't connect to anyone really being in Mumbai for over a year. Then we met for the first time exactly a year earlier. You we're the first connection I made out there and you connected me to the local Hip Hop scene. Through you I met people I can truly cherish for a life time and remember as beings who rigorously follow their passion, not matter what. So grateful to know you. You're such a talent and so humble!
