Hello everyone and welcome to my blog at this hour. It's a beautiful Saturday morning and it has been a great week so far with different activities and lots more. We just concluded the first full working week of the year and it was a wonderful one. The previous week didn't start as a full working week due to the public holiday on Monday. It was nice to see my colleagues at work once again after the short holidays. Most people resumed work fully this week, especially those that traveled to their distant villages to celebrate with their loved ones. Well, sit back, relax and enjoy all that I have packaged for your reading pleasure.

It was in the past one week or two that I understood the effects of population explosion and urbanization in a city. Let me break this down some more. During the festive season, it is a custom and tradition in Nigeria that people should travel to their hometowns, villages or even outside the country to celebrate Christmas and New Year.

Prior to this time, the roads are always filled with people going here and there, with traffic congestions becoming a menace road users have to deal with every single day. But due to the fact that people traveled to different states and countries, there was less traffic and the roads were easy to use for road users.

This simply means that due to urbanization so many people left their villages to travel to the city to enjoy good lights, good roads, and access more job opportunities which is lacking or not adequate in their previous place of residence. In major cities in Nigeria like Abuja and Lagos, the high rate of traffic is not always a good experience especially during the early hours of the day when people are going to work and in the evening when people are returning home after work. A trip that should not take more than 30 minutes will end up taking about an hour due to traffic congestion.

Last week I observed the roads were scanty and there were free movements of vehicles even during the hours that are known for serious traffic congestion, that is, between the hours of 6.30am to 10am and 4pm to 8pm. However, it was a different story this week when I headed out on Monday morning. I didn't understand what was happening at first when it was very difficult to get a cab.

It took about 20 minutes to get a cab that was going my direction. I understood better the reason for the scarcity of Taxis when we got moving and I saw traffic congestions. In my mind, I was like "Welcome back y'all". Some moments later, a passenger voiced out her own comments saying she was surprised that the roads were not busy the previous week and that's how one or two other people joined the conversation

Population explosion is something that need to be managed well in a country especially in major cities. This is because if it is not well managed it will lead to scarcity of so many things such as food, water, transportation and so on.

It could also lead to high rate of insecurity because different people are entering from different places with no specific jobs they want to take up in their new location which could result in taking up criminal activities.

Let's not forget that the more people in a particular locale, the more waste products that will be generated and it requires a good management to prevent air, land and water pollution.
