Honesty isn't only about being straightforward or being genuine. It is about being true to yourself and other people about your real identity and what you represent as an individual. With honesty, there are no discrepancies in the way with which we present our image to other people. Honesty helps us to show ourselves through our personalities to others in a consistent manner.

On the other hand, deception is the opposite of honesty and it is not a good thing. There is no good that comes from being deceptive, either to yourself or others. When you start to lie, you start to find every means to maintain your position through more lies and by so doing you are losing your reputation and credibility, which leads to people seeing you as a deceptive person even if they don't confront you. Some people know that you are lying but they play along with you in order to see more of your stupidity.

There are times when we lie to do something that isn't right even when we are aware of it. At this point, we care less about our morality, about the person we stand for, we do not care whether it is right or wrong. Even when our inner core, that is, conscience is pricking us and saying "this is below you", "will you be proud of yourself?" Each time we lie, we are consciously trying to achieve a desire that is going to produce a short-term pleasure. However, lying does not always end well, even though it is always readily available for use in the lips of most people.

There is a story about a young graduate who just completed his mandatory National Youth Service and is in search of a job. Luckily for him, his father's friend is a popular man, who is influential in the society. The man invited him to come his office with his credentials, so that he can run through it and check which position suits him best. When he arrived at the man's office, the receptionist informed him that the boss is having a business meeting with some other men in his office and offered him a seat.

After some minutes, the phone at the reception rang. The young man was instructed to come upstairs to collect some undisclosed amount of money and a car key to purchase a building material in a nearby market. The man, that is, his father's friend, looked like he was unsure of the cost of the building material but gave him a lot of money that will suffice. He also gave him a description of where he could get the best materials. The boy counted the money as he was walking down the stairs and it was about $150.

At last, he got to the market, did a brief market survey and realized that in all the stores he checked they had similar range of prices, so he had to negotiate more to get a good deal. He was able to purchase the item for about $55. On his way back to the office, he was tempted to tell the man he got it more than that so that he could have more money to himself. But on a second thought, he knew it wasn't worth it, after all.

To cut the long story short, his honesty paid in the end. It was all a short test to know whether he's sincere or deceitful and fit for the role of a procurement officer in their company. The stores the young man went to is owned by one of the friends of these group of friends, so it will take only a call to know the exact amount he purchased the item.

Honesty improves our self confidence and gives us the boldness to portray ourselves in the best way possible. Speaking the truth when there is a huge temptation to lie makes you feel good and proud of yourself. No matter how rich, famous or successful a man is in life, if he's not honest he can never be respected because his name will always be in the mud for one reason or another. Ideally, Success should not be determined by the amount of money in your bank account or your popularity on social media, it should be about your hard work, character and honesty.

Start practicing honesty through your thoughts, words and actions today. It is never to late to create a good impression about yourself.
