Hola amigos mochileros, excursionistas y turistas, como están? Después de muchos meses sin poder subir un post acá, vuelvo esta vez con un viaje increíble a el PNN Los Nevados, esta vez seria un viaje 2.0 por que recorrimos parte de las aguas termales del sifón, y parte del camino a Murillo.
En realidad yo quede en subir una segunda parte de mi primer viaje en Septiembre del 2023, pero mi hermano tuvo la brillante idea de borrar las fotos para liberar espacio y jamás me las envió teniendo en cuenta que el tiene IPhone y por su puesto se aprecia mejor la calidad de la imagen.

De igual manera mi viaje comenzó en Santa Rosa de Cabal, nos fuimos a las 6am y llegamos temprano a Manizales, allí mi hermano me prestaría la moto y yo iría con uno de mis primos viajando solo por primera vez. Comenzamos nuestro viaje a las 7:30 am hacia el Parque Nacional Natural Los Nevados, con la intención de nuevamente subir al pie del volcán y observar como se veía desde el mirador, ya que esta en alerta amarilla y esta en constante emisión de gases no se puede subir mas.

Hello backpackers, hikers and tourists, how are you? After many months without being able to upload a post here, I'm back this time with an incredible trip to the PNN Los Nevados, this time it would be a 2.0 trip because we went through part of the hot springs of the siphon, and part of the road to Murillo.
Actually I was supposed to upload a second part of my first trip in September 2023, but my brother had the brilliant idea to delete the pictures to free space and he never sent them to me because he has an IPhone and of course the quality of the image is better.

My trip started in Santa Rosa de Cabal, we left at 6am and arrived early to Manizales, there my brother would lend me the motorbike and I would go with one of my cousins travelling alone for the first time. We started our trip at 7:30 am to the National Natural Park Los Nevados, with the intention of going up to the foot of the volcano again and see how it looked from the viewpoint, as it is on yellow alert and is in constant emission of gases can not go up more.
Esta vez yo era el conductor por lo cual no tome fotos del camino, pero tenia una base para celular en el casco y si grabe gran parte del viaje con el teléfono. Por otra parte mi primo si tomo algunas fotos y grabo algunos tramos bonitos, ya que era su primera vez visitando este lugar, y la verdad el cambio de paisaje es muy lindo el verde de las montañas y el frio le dan un toque increíble a esta aventura.
Así que nuestra primera parada fue nuevamente en la Laguna Negra, al ser 02 de Enero de 2024 se podrán imaginar la cantidad de turistas que estaba aquí, mucho mas que en mi anterior visita, por lo cual la parada fue un poco mas lenta, tomamos un te de frutos rojos con una hoja de "coca" literalmente, y estuvimos acá unos 20 min. Además que tuve que comprar guantes para el frio, por que era increíble y no lo soportaba.
This time I was the driver, so I didn't take any pictures of the road, but I had a mobile phone cradle on my helmet and I did record most of the trip with my phone. On the other hand my cousin did take some pictures and recorded some nice sections, as it was his first time visiting this place, and the change of scenery is really nice, the green of the mountains and the cold give an incredible touch to this adventure.
So our first stop was again at the Laguna Negra, being January 02, 2024 you can imagine the amount of tourists that were here, much more than in my previous visit, so the stop was a little slower, we drank a red fruit tea with a leaf of "coca" literally, and we were here for about 20 min. I also had to buy gloves for the cold, because it was incredible and I couldn't stand it.
La segunda parada estaba en duda, por que teníamos la idea de ir directamente a la entrada del parque para ir al Volcán Nevado del Ruiz, o ir directamente a Murillo que estaba todavía a 1h de camino y es un pueblito muy bonito de sierra. Además que sus paisajes por fotos se veían increíbles y sus aguas termales, el problema es que no habíamos desayunado esperando hacerlo en uno de los restaurantes de carretera, pero lastimosamente no estaban abiertos, por lo cual decidimos seguir así hasta la parte llamada el Sifón.
Paramos en las quebradas que son emblemáticas de este parque y en donde todos se detienen a tomar fotos, hoy estaba mucho mas despejado que la anterior visita que hice, y se podía ver mucho mejor el cañón, o el lugar donde parte de lava desdencito hace muchos años cuando este volcán hizo erupción.
También hicimos algo un tanto extraño, saltamos la alambrada junto con otros turistas y nos acercamos a la naciente de la quebrada, que pasa, que vi muy complicada esta ruta, además el ejercito estaba rondando la zona y decidí que regresar era mejor opción, por que ya habíamos tomado buenas fotos. El otro grupo de jóvenes siguió su camino, imagino que iban por las rutas clandestinas hacia el volcán.
The second stop was in doubt, because we had the idea to go directly to the entrance of the park to go to the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano, or to go directly to Murillo, which was still 1 hour away and is a very pretty little town in the mountains. The problem is that we had not had breakfast, hoping to have it in one of the roadside restaurants, but unfortunately they were not open, so we decided to continue on to the part called El Sifon.
We stopped at the ravines that are emblematic of this park and where everyone stops to take pictures, today it was much clearer than the previous visit I made, and you could see much better the canyon, or the place where part of the lava came down many years ago when this volcano erupted.
We also did something a bit strange, we jumped over the fence together with other tourists and approached the source of the gorge, but I found this route very complicated, besides the army was patrolling the area and I decided that going back was a better option, because we had already taken some good photos. The other group of young people continued on their way, I imagine they were going along the clandestine routes towards the volcano.

Ahora continuamos nuestro camino al sifón, pero nuevamente hicimos parada en otra quebrada que esta a unos metros de la anterior, en esta hay mayor afluente de agua, menos gente por que casi todos paran inmediatamente en la primera. Acá pues tomamos mas fotos, caminamos mucho por hasta las orillas de la montaña y notamos que comenzaba a tornarse nublado, la neblina comenzaba a caer y el frio se sentía mucho mas fuerte. Mi primo se lavo las manos en esta agua, y estaba helada, la verdad es que tuvo las manos rojas por unos 15min hasta que entro en calor de nuevo, pero también es agua cristalina.
Por cierto las cenizas cubren los líquenes, los líquenes son una simbiosis entre hongos y algas por decirlo así, que son indicadores de aire puro y no contaminado, sin embargo estos líquenes están negros, cubiertos de cenizas y polvos.
Now we continued our way to the siphon, but again we stopped at another creek that is a few meters away from the previous one, in this one there is more water flowing, less people because almost everybody stops immediately at the first one. Here we took more pictures, we walked a long way up to the banks of the mountain and we noticed that it was starting to become cloudy, the mist was beginning to fall and the cold felt much stronger. My cousin washed his hands in this water, and it was freezing cold, the truth is that his hands were red for about 15 minutes until he got warm again, but it is also crystal clear water.
By the way the ashes cover the lichens, lichens are a symbiosis between fungi and algae so to speak, which are indicators of pure and unpolluted air, however these lichens are black, covered with ashes and dust.
Acá continuamos nuestro camino, pero me detuve en una pequeña laguna azul, el agua era sumamente cristalina y la primera vez que vine no la había visto, por lo cual presumo que es nueva, ya que acá siempre están construyendo en la vía y ampliándola.
En la cabaña de las bodegas del sifón, tuvimos la mala suerte que ni habían desayunos ni almuerzos, así que nos toco tomar café con un pan, y comprar dulces, doritos, papitas y otras cosas para soportar un poco el hambre, el lado negativo es que acá todo cuesta el doble o el triple de lo que vale en la ciudad.
Al no tener nada en el estomago y siendo aun muy temprano, abortamos la misión de ir a Murillo, en su lugar fuimos a las aguas termales del sifón que son icónicas ya que son de origen volcánico y son muy visitadas, pero nuevamente la temporada vacacional nos hizo la jugada y había demasiada gente en la parte mas turística de estas aguas, así que decidimos ir mas abajo, donde no iba mucha gente. El acceso también era sumamente complicado.
Para llegar acá se recorren 11-13km aproximadamente, de pendiente, lateramente es bajar por una montaña con carretera muy fuerte, rocas y arena suave que hace que los autos se regresen y que algunos motorizados se caigan. También el costo de la entrada es de 15000 pesos que serian un aproximado de 3.75$.
Here we continued on our way, but I stopped at a small blue lagoon, the water was crystal clear and the first time I came I had not seen it, so I presume it is new, as here they are always building on the road and widening it.
In the cabin of the bodegas del sifon, we had the bad luck that there was no breakfast or lunch, so we had to drink coffee with bread, and buy sweets, doritos, chips and other things to support a little hunger, the downside is that everything here costs double or triple what it costs in the city.
As we had nothing in our stomachs and it was still very early, we aborted our mission to go to Murillo, instead we went to the hot springs of Sifon, which are iconic as they are of volcanic origin and are very visited, but again the holiday season did the trick and there were too many people in the most touristic part of these waters, so we decided to go further down, where there were not many people. The access was also very complicated.
To get here you have to drive approximately 11-13km down a mountain with a very steep road, rocks and soft sand that makes the cars go backwards and some motorbikes fall off. Also the entrance fee is 15000 pesos which is approximately 3.75$.
Acá comimos un poco de lo que compramos, estuvimos 1h aproximadamente, pero había leído que permanecer mucho tiempo en estas aguas puede ser un poco peligroso, por que estaríamos inhalando gases tóxicos y azufre constantemente, así que aplique la de bañarme 20min, salir otros 15 y luego volver a entrar.
Sin embargo esto no funciono pues al momento comencé a marearme, me dieron nauseas y tuve que salirme por completo, el cambio de temperatura me afecto, pues por su puesto estamos a mas de 3500mts de altura sumergidos en agua hirviendo, algo debe pasar. Al momento de salir se siente el frio extremo del paramo, además que sientes como tu cuerpo arde y pica producto del azufre, eso si, jamás hay que abrir los ojos acá bajo el agua, o que no entre agua a ellos, el ardor es increíble.
Muchos grupos de motociclistas dejaban sus pertenencias en las motos o en la orilla del camino, nosotros las dejamos cerca de donde nos bañamos, y bueno muchas de las personas caminaban este sendero hasta arriba.
Here we ate a little of what we bought, we spent about 1h, but I had read that staying in these waters for a long time can be a bit dangerous, because we would be inhaling toxic gases and sulphur constantly, so I applied the idea of bathing for 20 minutes, getting out for another 15 minutes and then going back in.
However this didn't work because I started to feel dizzy, I got nauseous and I had to get out completely, the change of temperature affected me, because of course we are at more than 3500mts of altitude submerged in boiling water, something must happen. When you get out you feel the extreme cold of the paramo, and you also feel how your body burns and itches because of the sulphur, you must never open your eyes here under water, or that no water gets in them, the burning is unbelievable.
Many groups of motorcyclists left their belongings on the bikes or on the side of the road, we left them near where we bathed, and many of the people walked this trail up to the top.
A la 1pm aproximadamente comenzamos nuestro camino de regreso, por que seria 1h hasta Manizales y 1h hasta santa rosa, yo tenia demasiado sueño por el la noche anterior trabajamos hasta las 12am, y nos levantamos a las 5am, por lo cual tuvimos que irnos temprano para comer un poco en el camino y soportar el viaje.
Eso si, nos detuvimos a ver parte del inicio de las aguas termales, donde acá la temperatura es muchísimo mayor para bañase, el azufre se puede ver en el fondo y el olor es mucho mas intenso, olía a huevo podrido literalmente. Además la vegetación al rededor se ve como quemada, efecto del calor que emanan las aguas.
At about 1pm we started our way back, because it would be 1h to Manizales and 1h to Santa Rosa, I was too sleepy because the night before we worked until 12am, and we got up at 5am, so we had to leave early to eat a little on the way and endure the trip.
We stopped to see part of the beginning of the hot springs, where here the temperature is much higher for bathing, the sulphur can be seen at the bottom and the smell is much more intense, it literally smelled like rotten eggs. Besides, the vegetation around the hot springs looks burnt, the effect of the heat emanating from the waters.
Finalmente regresamos a casa y así fue nuestra aventura, que pro falta de comida no llegamos a nuestro destino principal. Sin embargo mi sueño es subir al volcán, no hacia la fumarola si no hasta donde pueda tocar nieve y que se vea el humo saliendo. También quiero ir a Murillo y a Armero que fue el pueblo que quedo enterrado por completo debido a la Erupción de este volcán.

Finally we returned home and so was our adventure, that due to lack of food we did not reach our main destination. However, my dream is to go up the volcano, not to the vent, but to where I can touch the snow and see the smoke coming out. I also want to go to Murillo and Armero which was the town that was completely buried by the eruption of this volcano.
Those are trips I will write down for my next visit.
