The best agronomist/veterinarian moment - Sheep and goat fair. // El mejor momento agrónomo/veterinario - Feria ovina y caprina.

I think that the best moments of the university careers of my deanship (Agronomy and Veterinary) are the field trips, and experimental works in which we have to visit crop areas, farms, livestock areas and other things. And I am sure that many of my classmates agree with me in this particular, for example one of the most expected things for us was the Sheep and Goat fair that was held a few months ago in my city, and I say expected because even the teachers invited us to go to the fair complex where this activity was dictated.
I remember that in the previous fair in the year 2022, two of my professors were speakers in cocoa and coffee projects within this fair (a little far from the theme of sheep and goat breeding) but nevertheless drew attention.

Creo que los mejores momentos de las carreras universitarias de mi decanato (Agronomía y Veterinaria) son los viajes de campo, y trabajos experimentales en los que tenemos que visitar arreas de cultivos, fincas, areas ganaderas y otras cosas. Y estoy seguro que muchos de mis compañeros coinciden con conmigo en este particular, por ejemplo una de las cosas mas esperadas por nosotros fue la feria Ovina y Caprina que se celebro hace unos meses en mi ciudad, y digo esperada por que hasta los profesores nos invitaban a ir al complejo ferial donde se dictaba esta actividad.
Recuerdo que en la anterior feria del año 2022, dos de mis profesores fueron ponentes en proyectos de cacao y café dentro de esta feria (un poco alejado del tema de la cría de ovejos y cabras) sin embargo llamó la atención.

Why I say that it is a moment awaited by these students, is because here we can see what genetics and zootechnics are about, subjects that both careers see, in genetics we see the crosses between animals and plants, the pure blood line and dominant characteristics between families and species.
Although everyone thinks that my career is only about plants, but we also see the livestock part, the animal part and how to work with them.

Por que digo que es un momento esperado por dichos estudiantes, es por que aquí podemos ver lo que se trata la genética y zootecnia, materias que ambas carreras vemos, en genética vemos los cruces entre animales y plantas, la linea pura de sangre y características dominantes entre las familias y especies.
Aunque todos creen que mi carrera solo trata sobre plantas, pero también vemos parte pecuaria, la parte animal y como trabajar con ellos.

The moment we enter and see all this genetics of animals is really incredible, plus we have a good management in terms of breeds and great variety that very few people know and are familiar with these issues. In my family it is not usual to see purebred sheep or goats, 90% only know the criollas, and in particular it is the first time I see many breeds that I had never seen before.

En el momento que entramos y vemos toda esta genética de animales es realmente increíble, además que tenemos un buen manejo en cuanto a razas y gran variedad que muy pocas personas conocen y están familiarizadas con estos temas. En mi familia no es usual ver ovejos ni cabras de raza, 90% solo conocen las criollas, y en lo particular es la primera vez que veo muchas razas que jamás había visto.

For this activity all my classmates attended but in separate groups, since we could not go on the same day, I went with only one classmate and a cousin. But more other people from my university, both from agronomy in advanced semesters and veterinary attended, because I saw them during the time I was there. Even the veterinarians had their class uniforms.

Para esta actividad todos mis compañeros asistieron pero por grupos separados, ya que no podiamos el mismo día, yo fui con un compañero solamente y un primo. Pero mas otras personas de mi universidad tanto de agronomía de semestres avanzados como de veterinaria asistieron, por que los vi en el tiempo que estuve allí. Incluso los de veterinaria tenían sus uniformes de clases.

In the case of the sheep, it is the first time I have seen sheep in the style of American movies, the typical white sheep with lots of wool (the same one from the movie Babe the piggy goes to town). I only knew the black headed Persian breed, but I learned at that fair that there are West African, Black Belly, White dorper, Dorper, Santa Ines and many others. I was able to see the most beautiful specimens from the farms of my city, from all the region and part of the country.
This fair is about exposing the genetics and the best specimens of each farm, since they have many years in it, some completely exceed the expectations of those who attend to see.
For example my family went and were impressed with the specimens that weighed up to 100kg, a barbarity, and I also learned the difference of the breed, some are for meat production, others milk, other offspring and there are some dual purpose.

Para el caso de los ovinos, es la primera vez que veo ovejos del estilo de las películas estadounidenses, la típica oveja blanca con mucha lana (esa misma de la película de Babe el puerquito va a la ciudad). Yo solo conocia la raza Persa cabeza negra, pero me entere en esa feria que existen las razas West African, Black Belly, White dorper, Dorper, Santa Ines y muchas otras. Pude ver los ejemplares mas bonitos de las granjas de mi ciudad, de toda la region y parte del país.
Esta feria se trata de exponer la genética y los mejores ejemplares de cada granja, puesto que tienen muchos años en ello, algunas superar por completo las expectativas de los que asisten a ver.
Por ejemplo mi familia fue y quedaron impresionados con los ejemplares que pesaban hasta 100kg, una barbaridad, y también aprendí la diferencia de la raza, algunas son para producir carne, otras leche, otras crías y hay algunas doble propósito.

The sheep and goats that are cleanest and most presentable were presented at the fair for the competition of the best specimen, this was based on hair color, genetic characteristics, size and were voted by a judge, where they then decided who won.
Each farm proudly displays the winning ribbons on the stands, and there you can also see the breeds they work with, with some dogs you can interact and with others you can only observe.

Las ovejas y cabras que están mas limpias y presentables eran presentadas en la feria para la competencia del mejor ejemplar, esto se basaba en el color de pelo, características genéticas, tamaño y eran votados por un juez, donde luego decidían quien ganaba.
Cada granja luce orgullosamente las cintas ganadoras en los stands, y allí también se pueden ver las razas con que trabajan, con algunos ejemplares se puede interactuar y con otros solo se puede observar.

With the case of goats I was already a little more familiar, I know the breeds Canaria, Alpina, Saanen, Nubian among others, since my family raises goats, and there are some breeds that stand out in that area. However, most of them are Criollas, or crosses between Criollas and Canarias, it is an interesting thing to see.
Of course, being familiar with goats, I was not very surprised by the specimens, however the genetics are really incredible, since each breed has unique characteristics that make them different.
I also know that of these animals there are dairy goats, for meat production and dual purpose.

Con el caso de los caprinos ya estaba un poco mas familiarizado, conozco las razas Canaria, Alpina, Saanen, Nubian entre otras, ya que mi familia cría cabras, y hay algunas razas que sobresalen en esa zona. Pero sin embargo la mayoría son criollas, o cruces entre criollas y canarias, es una cosa interesante de ver la verdad.
Por su puesto al estar familiarizado con las cabras no me sorprendieron mucho los ejemplares, sin embargo la genética de verdad que es una cosa increíble, ya que cada raza presenta las características únicas que las hacen distintas.
También se que de estos animales existen las lecheras, para producción de carne y doble propósito.

Even now, my professor is a veterinarian and she always gives us examples with the genetics of goats, so we do exercises in the style of day-to-day work on a farm or production unit.

Incluso ahora viendo estadística mi profesora es de Veterinaria y siempre nos da ejemplos con la genética de las cabras, de esta manera hacemos ejercicios estilo del trabajo de día a día en una finca o unidad de producción.

There are stands that offer goat milk products, sweets, ice cream, desserts and the truth is that they are very delicious, you can hardly tell the difference. In addition to that, as with the sheep, there is a presentation of specimens for medals.

Hay stands que ofrecen productos de leche de cabra, dulces, helados, postres y la verdad es que son muy deliciosos casi no se nota la diferencia. Además de eso al igual que con los ovejos hay presentación de ejemplares para la obtención de medallas.

A little further at the end of everything was the machinery exhibition, since this is used on many farms and there was only agricultural machinery, there was nothing mechanized related to livestock production. Of course, I am also familiar with these as there is a subject called Agricultural Machinery and it is where we see, learn to handle and repair tractors, harvesters, etc.

Un poco mas al final de todo estaba la exposición de maquinaria, puesto que esto se utiliza en muchas fincas y pues solo había maquinaria agrícola, no había nada mecanizado referente a la producción pecuaria. Por su puesto que con estos también estoy familiarizado ya que hay una materia que se llama Maquinaria agrícola y es donde vemos, aprendemos a manejar y reparar tractores, cosechadoras, etc.

By the way, the national research laboratories also have their genetic projects, which are basically crosses of criollos with other breeds to improve some deficiency.

Por cierto los laboratorios de investigación nacional tienen también sus proyectos de genética, que básicamente son cruces de criollos con otras razas para mejorar un poco alguna deficiencia.

And some breeds have sheep dogs trained to herd animals even though they are not herding breeds, which is incredible, and other booths only showed purebred breeds of dogs.

Y algunas razas tiene perros ovejeros adiestrados para el pastoreo de los animales aunque no sean razas de pastoreo, algo increíble y otros stand solo mostraban razas de perros puros.

So a little bit shared of my experience in the sheep and goat fair, which hopefully soon will be the bovine fair, which also calls my attention or the agricultural fair, there are too many fairs that I would like to attend.
