The Continental – The Assassin’s Hotel in the John Wick Universe. An epic cinematic story worth watching.

The John Wick cinematic universe continues to evolve and surprise audiences, and in 2023, Amazon Prime Video brought The Continental, a prequel series dedicated to the famous assassin’s hotel, to screens. Over the course of four films with a resounding global success, the John Wick franchise has built a unique identity, based on impeccably choreographed fight scenes, a distinct visual style and a captivating mythology. Now, with The Continental, fans have the chance to explore the origins of one of the most intriguing pieces of this puzzle: the hotel that serves as a sanctuary for assassins.

The Continental is a miniseries consisting of 4 episodes, each lasting approximately 90 minutes. The action takes place in New York in the 1970s, a period in which the metropolis was defined by chaos, corruption and violence. This time frame is perfect for exploring the origins of the hotel and the mythology surrounding it, providing a captivating retro aesthetic backdrop.

The series follows young Winston Scott (played by Colin Woodell), who embarks on a difficult journey to become the manager of The Continental. At the heart of the story is his conflict with Cormac O’Connor (Mel Gibson), the current leader of the hotel and a complex character whose influence and cruelty shape the atmosphere of the series.

The trailer released before the series’ debut captured attention with a mix of retro visual styles, intense action and a focus on character development. Iconic elements from the John Wick universe, such as the codes of conduct of the assassins and stylized violence, are present in full, but in a darker and more mature approach.

The atmosphere of the ’70s is captured in impressive detail, from the elegant costumes to the cityscapes marked by decay and opulence in equal measure. The series aims to expand the mythology of the John Wick universe, exploring the roots of the criminal organization that controls the hotel and the strict rules that maintain its balance.

  • The story is based on the fight for control of The Continental, a sanctuary that operates under strict rules to ensure peace among assassins. By exploring the origins of this place, the series reveals the fragility of the balance that keeps the underworld in order.

One of the strengths of the John Wick franchise has always been the impressive choreography of the fight scenes, and The Continental is no exception. The series maintains the high standards of the films, offering intense and stylized action scenes that highlight both the skills of the actors and the talent of the team behind the cameras.

The visual style of the series is as important as the story, and the production team has done an excellent job of recreating the atmosphere of the 70s. From the dark and contrasting lighting to the details of the costumes and sets, every element contributes to the immersion of the viewer in this fascinating universe.

  • While the series works well as a prequel, the absence of the iconic character is felt at times...yep Keanu Reeves, he's missing from this series. Some moments may seem too long for viewers expecting continuous action.

While not perfect, The Continental offers a satisfying cinematic experience and sets the stage for future productions in this universe. It's a "must-watch" for John Wick fans and anyone who appreciates a well-told story in a spectacular visual setting - I highly recommend it.
