MALUM (2023) An entertaining proposal

The horror genre has become very popular lately. The marketing works very well and is giving a good place to movies like "Talk to Me", which I hope to see soon because I'm very curious about it. But this time, we will talk about a film that stands out for its interesting story and huge doses of jumpscare and gore, something that has become popular again in cinema recently.
I think this gives a more interesting perspective, as it satisfies the narrative and generates in the viewer a stimulus of emotion that is waiting to suffer. "Malum", has very intriguing scenes and a story that could be said to be more of the same, but possesses that unusual characteristic in the way it is presented. If you have already seen the movie, I guess you will understand what I am saying, and in this review, I will try to specify it a little more.

El género de terror se ha vuelto muy popular últimamente. El marketing funciona muy bien y le está dando buena cabida a películas como “Talk to me”, la cual espero ver pronto porque me da mucha curiosidad. Pero en esta ocasión, hablaremos de un filme que resalta por su historia interesante y enormes de dosis de ‘jumpscare’ y gore, algo que se ha vuelto a popularizar en el cine recientemente.
Pienso que esto da una perspectiva más interesante, pues satisface a la narrativa y genera en el espectador un estímulo de emoción que está esperando padecer. “Malum”, tiene escenas muy intrigantes y una historia que podría decirse es más de lo mismo, pero que posee esa característica inusual en la manera en como está presentada. Si ya has visto la película, supongo que entenderás lo que digo, y en esta reseña, trataré de especificarlo un poco más.

'Malum' is a horror film released earlier this year, directed by Anthony DiBlasi and written by the same director along with Scott Poiley. The film happens to be a remake of the well-known horror drama 'The Last Shift', directed by the same DiBlasi. Although I have not seen the first film, according to some reviews I have read, the proposal of this remake differs quite a bit from the original.
In the cast, we have Jessica Sula, as the main protagonist, Candice Coke, Kevin Wayne, Monroe Cline, Chaney Morrow, and Natalie Victoria, among others. Sean McDaniel was in charge of photography and Welcome Villain was in charge of production.
‘Malum’ es una película de terror estrenada este mismo año, dirigida por Anthony DiBlasi y escrita por el mismo director junto a Scott Poiley. La película resulta ser un remake de la reconocida obra de terror ‘The Last Shift’, dirigida por el mismo DiBlasi. Aunque no he visto el primer filme, según algunas críticas que he leído, la propuesta de este remake difiere bastante de la original.
En el reparto actoral tenemos a Jessica Sula, como protagonista principal, Candice Coke, Kevin Wayne, Monroe Cline, Chaney Morrow, Natalie Victoria, entre otros. En la parte fotográfica estuvo a cargo Sean McDaniel y en la producción destacó la empresa Welcome Villain.
The story begins with a police officer who rescues some girls from an evil cult that intended to sacrifice them to a dark and bloodthirsty god, but the man is not quite right in the head after that, and commits illicit acts within the police department until he eventually commits suicide.
A year after the event, his daughter Jessica (Jessica Sula) enlists in the police force, disavowing the words of her mother Diane (Candice Coke), who only refers to Jessica's father as a scathing killer. Diane seems like an unstable woman, addicted to alcohol and perhaps other drugs as well, which upsets Jessica and causes her to withdraw even further from her mother.
I like drama in movies, although here you are not going to find extensive doses of this feeling, as they are only additions that serve to justify posthumous situations that are within the narrative.
On her first day on the job, Jessica accepts the last night shift at the old police station in her town. A shift that no one wants, but she asks for it, why? Because according to her it will help her find out what happened to her father. She wants to understand why her father did what he did, and she will risk everything to find out the truth.
Jessica is left alone in that police station that night; imagine being in a huge, dingy place, with gross parts and it gives you a sense of tension. Poor Jessica endured all this and on top of that, she started hearing strange noises.
Gradually situations are revealed that instill in Jessica a rising terror. Calls from strange people, terrifying secrets that are revealed, and unexplained supernatural events that have to do with an ancient demon and a cult, will the protagonist be able to survive a night alone where death stalks her relentlessly?
La historia comienza con un oficial de policía que rescata a unas chicas de una secta malvada que pretendía sacrificarlas a un dios oscuro y sanguinario, pero el hombre no queda muy bien de la cabeza después de eso, y comete actos ilícitos dentro del departamento de policía hasta que al final se suicida.
Un año después del suceso, su hija Jessica (Jessica Sula) se alista en el cuerpo de policía, renegando las palabras de su madre Diane (Candice Coke), quien solo se refiere al padre de Jessica como un mordaz asesino. Diane parece una mujer inestable, adicta al alcohol y quizás también a otras drogas, eso molesta a Jessica y hace que se aleje aún más de su madre.
Me gusta el drama en las películas, aunque aquí no vas a encontrar dosis extensas de este sentimiento, pues solo son agregados que sirven para justificar situaciones póstumas que están dentro de la narrativa.
En su primer día de trabajo, Jessica acepta el último turno nocturno en la vieja estación de policía de su ciudad. Un turno que nadie quiere, pero ella lo pide ¿por qué? Porque según ella esto la ayudará a descubrir lo que sucedió con su padre. Ella quiere entender por qué su padre hizo lo que hizo, y se arriesgará a todo para averiguar la verdad.
Jessica se queda sola en aquella estación policial esa noche; imagínate estar en un lugar enorme, lúgubre, con partes asquerosas y que te da una sensación de tensión. La pobre Jessica soportó todo esto y encima empezó a escuchar ruidos extraños.
Paulatinamente se van revelando situaciones que infundan en Jessica un ascendente terror. Llamadas de gente extraña, secretos terroríficos que se van revelando y eventos sobrenaturales inexplicables que tienen que ver con un demonio antiguo y una secta, ¿podrá la protagonista sobrevivir a una noche sola donde la muerte la acecha sin descanso?
The first 40 minutes of the movie didn't seem like a big deal to me, as it's the part where the story sets the stage to start rising with tension; a feeling I felt slightly after the first few acts. The jumpscares were okay; maybe they would impress anyone, but in my case, they didn't make me jump out of my chair or spill my coffee, I think I somehow expected them.
Although I must confess that some of them did make me feel a fleeting scare, most of them were too predictable for my mind. What I do want to emphasize about this movie is the amount of well-done gore it has. I didn't find the make-up forced at all and it was very well and in keeping with each scene it was set in.
However, I did feel that some parts were a bit over the top, but that didn't bother me at all, I even felt some laughter at the way the movie was trying to impress me at times.
About the story I have no complaints, I think it's an excellent proposal of narratives about satanic sects and occult illicit groups, but in the end, I feel that it doesn't contribute anything new and is placed for me in one more of the pile. But the important thing about 'Malum', is the way the story was presented, maintaining a slow pace at the beginning and then ascending to the stage of barbarism during the last acts, with an ending that, although it was not the best I've seen, I thought it was decent, but a little forced.
Los primeros 40 minutos de película no me parecieron la gran cosa, pues es la parte en el que la historia prepara el terreno para comenzar a ascender con la tensión; sensación que sentí levemente después de los primeros actos. Los jumpscares estuvieron bien; quizás a cualquier persona impresionarían, pero en mi caso no me hicieron saltar de mi silla ni derramar mi café, creo que de alguna manera me los esperaba.
Aunque si debo confesar que algunos si me hicieron sentir un susto fugaz, en su mayoría para mi mente fueron demasiado predecibles. Lo que sí quiero recalcar de esta película es la cantidad de gore bien hecho que tiene. No me pareció para nada forzado el maquillaje y estuvo muy bien y acorde a cada escena en el que estaba programado.
Sin embargo, sentí que algunas partes fueron muy exageradas, pero eso no me molestó del todo, sentí hasta algo de risa por la manera en que a veces la película trataba de impresionarme.
Sobre la historia no tengo ninguna queja, creo que es una excelente propuesta de narrativas sobre sectas satánicas y grupos ilícitos ocultos, pero que al final siento que no aporta nada nuevo y se coloca para mí en uno más del montón. Pero lo importante de ‘Malum’, es la manera en como fue presentada la historia, manteniendo un ritmo lento al principio y luego ascendiendo a la etapa de la barbarie durante los últimos actos, con un final que, aunque no fue el mejor que haya visto, me pareció decente, pero un poco forzado.
I see 'Malum' as those horror movies that you enjoy at the cinema; that is, they are good to entertain and pass the time, but they are not very complicated because they are made for a very wide audience with collective understanding; because the film adds all the necessary details so that the common viewer can understand it. I didn't think this movie was bad, but it wasn't very good either, it's like I said before, it's good to be entertained and that's it.
Veo a ‘Malum’ como esas películas de terror que disfrutas en el cine; es decir, son buenas para entretenerse y pasar el rato, pero que no son muy complicadas porque están hechas para un público muy amplio con entendimiento colectivo; pues la película agrega todos los detalles necesarios para que el espectador común pueda entenderla. Esta obra no me pareció mala, pero tampoco fue muy buena, es como he dicho con antelación, es buena para entretenerse y ya.

Dios mío creo que la chica se maquilló demasiado antes de ir a trabajar, jajaja ¡nah, mentira! es como dices, ultimamente en el cine de horror y suspenso se está usando mucho el Gore, pero a veces exageran un poquitin 😅😅. Yo como soy hiper cobarde no voy a ver la película, pero te prometo que le daré la recomendación a mi hermano, ese sí disfruta de esto este macabrismo 😅😅. Además la trama se ve bastante interesante empezando por el trauma de la chica al crecer con un padre que se suicidó, parece mentira, peeo muchos terminan así, sumidos en las drogas, el alcohol buscando siempre aplacar el dolor intentando entender algo que, tal vez, nunca sera entendido del todo.
